Ch. 4
Chapter 4
I lay flat on the low wall with my eyes closed, letting the cool wind calm me for three minutes.
During this time, Xiao 6 was sensible enough to remain silent, letting me be alone in my quiet solitude, until I suddenly sat up and coughed, as if I had caught a chill.
Only then did Xiao 6 speak up, suggesting, “Host, let’s go back to the hospital room.”
“Let’s stay a bit longer,” I said lightly, sitting cross-legged on the low wall, my arms crossed, and my blood-red eyes half-lowered, gazing at the road in front of the hospital. “I’m waiting for someone.”
No sooner had I spoken than I sneezed, my snow-white hair on my forehead dishevelled by the wind, slightly obscuring my handsome and delicate features.
Xiao 6, bewildered, asked a series of questions: “Huh? Waiting for whom? Did you make an appointment with someone? When?”
“When I got the key, I made an appointment with Jiang Yunyi through the nurse,” I said, raising my finger to push away the bangs that obscured my vision, then glancing down at the time displayed on my phone.
“Let’s wait five more minutes. If he still hasn’t arrived, I’ll go back to the hospital room. It’s windy on the rooftop, and it gets colder the longer you stay. He’s not worth me waiting specifically for him for more than ten minutes.”
Xiao 6 recalled that when I took the key earlier, I had just said to the nurse, “I’ll wait for him to come,” and was dumbfounded: “Huh? That counts as an appointment? Will Jiang Yunyi really come?”
“He’ll come,” I said, pouting slightly, my tone surprisingly sarcastic. “He’s very concerned about my health, you see—”
“Concerned? But aside from arranging his own people to be nurses to take care of you, he didn’t do anything else, did he? This hospital is also an organization-owned hospital.”
Xiao 6 scratched its code head in confusion, recalling Duan Xingzhi appearing outside the hospital room window this afternoon, and added, “And when you were being resuscitated this afternoon, he didn’t seem to have come to see you at all; only Duan Xingzhi came.”
I slowly shook my head, stating with certainty, “No, he came this afternoon.”
Xiao 6 was unconvinced: “If he came, why didn’t he see you?”
“Your authority allows you to view past events, right?” I didn’t directly answer Xiao 6’s question, but instead said, “You can check if he was here this afternoon. I suspect that while Duan Xingzhi was seeing me, he was waiting in my attending physician’s office.”
Xiao 6’s authority indeed allowed it to check. After a moment, it exclaimed in surprise, “Eek, it’s true!”
I revealed an 'I told you so' expression.
A moment later, Xiao 6 was even more surprised: “Why didn’t he come to see you? I saw him leave the office directly after consulting the doctor about your condition.”
“There’s no need to come in person; asking the doctor is enough. After all, he’s not genuinely concerned about my health; he just wants to know if I’ll die,” I said, casually fiddling with my phone, my tone nonchalant. “If you hadn’t appeared today, he would have come to see me.”
“I didn’t appear?” Xiao 6’s mind didn’t immediately process it, but when it did, it was shocked: “If I didn’t appear, you would have died!”
I nodded, stating frankly, “Exactly. If I died, he would definitely come to see me, to mourn his sunk cost of over ten years, tsk tsk tsk.”
Xiao 6: Oh, this.
It was now truly curious about what had happened between Bai Xuechao and Jiang Yunyi.
Just listening to Bai Xuechao, their relationship seemed a bit subtle, didn’t it?
Unfortunately, Bai Xuechao was its bound subject, so it had no right to view Bai Xuechao’s past scenes, as this was the host’s privacy. If it were to check through Jiang Yunyi, any scenes related to Bai Xuechao would also be automatically blocked. The only thing it could see was Bai Xuechao’s settings, but Bai Xuechao’s settings were only a few sentences.
Alas, having a host whose life trajectory was almost entirely filled in randomly by system operation was truly difficult; its desire for gossip could not be satisfied.
I glanced down at my phone again; it was almost five minutes. I had just put away my phone and was about to get down from the low wall when my peripheral vision caught a black sedan approaching on the road in front of the hospital building. The light from its headlights cut through the quiet night, bright and striking.
“The person I’m waiting for is here.” However, my expression wasn't very happy. I sighed, “It seems I’ll have to endure more of this cold wind here.”
The car door opened, and first, a leg wearing blue silk pajama bottoms but incongruously shod in leather shoes stepped out. Then, the man leaned out of the car door and stepped out of the vehicle.
Jiang Yunyi was dressed in a full set of blue silk pajamas, his ink-black hair almost blending into the night.
The first thing he did after getting out of the car was to lift his head and look towards the hospital rooftop, his gaze, framed by the thin gold-rimmed glasses on his nose, meeting mine from afar.
Xiao 6 held up its code-formed melon, a little excited: “Wow wow wow, Jiang Yunyi is here! He didn’t even change out of his pajamas!”
I was still sitting on the low wall at the edge of the rooftop, looking down at Jiang Yunyi, and casually raised my hand to wave at him twice, which counted as a greeting.
Jiang Yunyi didn’t respond to me and walked directly towards the hospital building.
Taking advantage of the fact that Jiang Yunyi hadn't reached the rooftop yet, I quickly asked, “Xiao 6, what plot does the male lead need to accomplish next?”
My speaking speed this time was a bit faster than usual. Xiao 6 seemed to sense my urgency from this sentence and also accelerated its speaking speed: “The male lead takes his teammates to a famous marine amusement park in D City for vacation, where he obtains a special ability energy crystal, but it is taken away by the villain using some means.”
After it finished speaking, it quickly added, “The special ability energy crystal is the villain’s token of allegiance for officially joining the Dark Organization.”
Bai Xuechao: “???”
Wait, did I just miss a sentence?
One sentence was about the male lead taking his teammates to the marine amusement park for vacation, and the next he obtained a special ability energy crystal, with no mention of what happened in between. Although processes might be omitted, it shouldn't be omitted to this extent, right? Was it obtained from a person or hidden in the amusement park? Had Bai Guzi's plot outline completely given up?
However, I just wanted a general understanding for now and didn’t plan to ask for details immediately.
I quickly asked the next question: “Can my current physical condition support me going to D City?”
“Yes, it can. Your current state of health is because I reverted your disease data to the day of your 17th birthday,” Xiao 6 said. “While you are completing system tasks, I will help stabilize your physical health around the data of that date. But even if your physical state is stable, you can still get sick.”
My 17th birthday was eight months ago. Although my health wasn’t great back then, it was much better than when I was being resuscitated today.
“Alright, I understand,” I said.
Almost as soon as Bai Xuechao and Xiao 6 finished their conversation, a faint sound came from the stairwell leading to the rooftop.
I was a special ability user. When special ability users leveled up, their physical qualities would also be somewhat enhanced; the five senses were one of them.
At that moment, I could discern that it was the sound of leather shoes on the steps.
The footsteps grew closer, and the rooftop door was opened.
Jiang Yunyi, still in his pajamas, stepped onto the hospital rooftop. The refreshing tea aroma of Da Hong Pao, with a hint of floral fragrance, wafted all around with the incessant breeze on the rooftop.
Having gone almost a day without food, my tongue subconsciously pressed against my canine teeth.
I cursed Jiang Yunyi in my heart.
I knew Jiang Yunyi had no good intentions. He must have known from the nurse that I hadn't eaten, so he deliberately used lure-pheromone to scheme against me and wear down my will.
Lure-pheromone was a special scent that every special ability user possessed, its purpose being to attract prey to consume them. However, who actually consumed whom was not always certain.
The range of attracted prey included not only mutated species formed from biological mutations but also… special ability users with different alimentary preferences than oneself.
Jiang Yunyi was a herbivorous special ability user, and Bai Xuechao was an omnivorous special ability user.
Theoretically, they were both on each other’s menu.
