Chapter 9 - My Head Went Blank
The Abandoned Stone.
What is that?
It was such a shocking nickname.
“No, a person… My nickname ‘quack healer’ is harsh too, but isn’t that too much?”
“Well, what can you do? She’s the one who keeps forming new parties despite having her party disbanded and her companions abandoning her multiple times? Even if… rabbit beastkin are known to get lonely easily.”
Does the saying about rabbits getting lonely apply here too?
“Anyway.”
Miriana noona twirled her index finger and said.
“Since Luna’s current companions are C-rank, they’ll split up soon. When that happens, Luna will again spend a few days crying and being depressed.”
“Again?”
“I told you, it’s happened more than 10 times. How could people not know how Luna behaves after parting with her party? She cries for a few days, drags her emotions around, and then forms a new party with either rookie adventurers~ or slightly lower-ranked adventurers who take pity on her.”
“So what you’re saying is that I should…”
“Yes, when Luna is at her most vulnerable. That’s when you should ask to become her companion. Ah, but it’s better not to do it right after they break up or the next day. You should wait until she’s shed some of her sadness for it to definitely succeed.”
“That feels really sketchy and suspicious.”
“Still, this is probably the surest way for Jin-sang to get a companion? Besides the three I mentioned, with Jin-sang’s current reputation, there’s no one else who would accept you.”
“Hmm…”
“Luna is a C-rank adventurer, so her skills are decent, and since she stays in this city, she knows the requests around here very well, making her an excellent guide for Jin-sang who’s still just gathering herbs. They say that, foolishly, when Luna gets new companions, she’s extremely kind to them out of happiness. Like she’d even give them her liver if asked.”
“Hearing that makes me even more suspicious.”
“Really? …Well, I’m not forcing you if Jin-sang doesn’t want to. Even if Jin-sang doesn’t approach her~ Luna will eventually form another adventurer party anyway. She’s a rabbit who can’t live with loneliness.”
Miriana noona poured some black tea, took a sip, and looked at me.
“These three are the only people I can recommend right now. Do you have any other questions?”
“No, I don’t have any now. If I have more questions later, I can come back here, right?”
“Sure. Ah, but I’ll be busy with my revenge for a few days, so I might not be here often.”
“Then I should come back in about a week, right?”
“My, cutting it so precisely makes me sad. Jin-sang~.”
Miriana noona grabbed the towel near her chest and opened it slightly as she said.
“Don’t you want to see me?”
“Ah, noona, please.”
Don’t make my lower half angry.
“Pfft, sorry sorry. Jin-sang is really such a cute kid, fun to tease.”
Miriana noona waved her hand from side to side and said.
“Take care, Jin-sang. Ah, I’ll keep my schedule clear in a week, so make sure to drop by.”
“Well, I was planning to, but why?”
“I need someone to brag to about how well my revenge is going, right? Especially to Jin-sang, my kind~ lifesaver♪”
“Alright. Then see you in a week.”
“Bye bye~.”
By the time I left Miriana noona’s house, the sunset had completely faded and it was evening.
“Phew… I thought I was going to go crazy with arousal.”
But at least tonight’s side dish is decided!
Having maintained my noble pride as a virgin, I quickly returned to my room at the adventurer’s guild to reward myself.
◈
A week passed.
During that time, there were no particular changes.
That damn Samurth continued to tease me.
Blex still looked at me with a sweaty, sticky gaze.
Celine was always smiling like an angel.
For me, it was the same daily routine of finishing herb gathering after my serving job.
The only difference was that in the evenings, following Miriana noona’s advice, I tried to build some strength by doing bodyweight exercises when I had time.
Also…
“Luna noona, let’s try this request next time!”
“Yeah, yeah! We’re C-rank now! We can succeed at this request too!”
“U-um… b-but rather than that request, I think th-this one looks better…”
“Come on, we’ve done that one several times already.”
“That’s right, sis! We should try new requests too! Don’t worry! We’re not as weak as you think anymore!”
“Ah, th-that… okay, f-fine.”
The only other change was that my gaze would occasionally drift toward Luna while I was doing my serving job.
Looking at Luna made various thoughts come to mind.
Why does she continue being an adventurer despite having her party disbanded 10 times?
Is her stuttering also perhaps due to such experiences?
Such questions that could only be answered by asking her directly crossed my mind.
Honestly, it would be unreasonable not to feel sympathy after hearing such a story.
Being gentlemanly and sincere, I’m not that hard-hearted.
“Hmm? Jin-sang, are you working out these days? Your muscles seem to have become a bit~ more manly? Hoho, as expected, with me, a berserker combo…”
“Eek! No way!”
Ah, my motivation to exercise is disappearing.
On the evening of the seventh day,
I arrived at Miriana noona’s house that I had visited once before.
Knock knock knock
“Miriana noona.”
After knocking on the door and calling for Miriana noona, I heard footsteps from inside, and after a moment, the door opened.
“Hoho. Welcome, Jin-sang.”
Miriana greeted me with a bright smile.
“Y-yes…”
And I couldn’t help but stutter when I saw Miriana noona welcoming me.
Miriana noona wasn’t wearing old clothes with holes everywhere.
Nor was she wrapped in just a bath towel.
She had proper, not excessive makeup, wore fancy earrings and a necklace.
Above all, she was wearing a purple dress that clung to her body, befitting someone called the Queen of the Night.
Seeing me stutter, Miriana noona made that mischievous expression she has when teasing me and asked.
“Jin-sang?”
“Yes.”
“How do I look today?”
“You look extremely pretty. No, you were already pretty, but wow… I can only express admiration. Honestly, I thought your healed face was already very beautiful… but all dressed up, you’re pretty beyond imagination.”
“…”
Blinking for a moment, Miriana noona gave a small laugh and then smiled brightly.
“Thank you. Jin-sang is so honest and kind. Come in.”
I entered Miriana noona’s house and sat on the sofa as before.
“Here, Jin-sang. Since you don’t like black tea, here’s fruit juice.”
“Ah, thank you.”
Unlike before, Miriana gave me fruit juice instead of black tea.
I took a sip, and it was apple-flavored.
Sweet and nice.
“You can’t drink black tea but you drink fruit juice so deliciously?”
“Fruits are good for health and they’re sweet and delicious like this, right? Isn’t it better than bitter black tea?”
“That childlike side is cute too♪”
It’s a bit embarrassing when she keeps calling me cute.
“Ahem, so has Miriana noona made progress with her revenge?”
“Of course!”
Miriana noona spoke with an extremely bright smile.
“I took such satisfying revenge on those rotten bastards!”
“Oh.”
“After parting with Jin-sang, what I did was…”
To summarize Miriana noona’s story:
Worried that barging into the brothel that had turned her away would only result in them saying “So what?” despite their surprise, Miriana noona,
First sought out her regular customers.
Then, using her man-bewitching skills that earned her the title Queen of the Night, she made them sympathize with her situation and harbor resentment toward the brothel and the prostitutes and managers who drove her out.
After repeating this process several times and securing allies, Miriana noona headed straight to the brothel.
Miriana noona made a grand entrance, smiling brilliantly alongside her wealthy customers who rushed in to file numerous complaints.
The prostitute who, out of jealousy, had secretly put disease-inducing drugs in Miriana’s drinks was caught, and the employees who had coldly ignored her without giving any help were fired.
The most vicious one, the manager who told Miriana not to touch his body and to get lost, was taken away by some very scary men.
Leaving alone the prostitutes who just did their jobs and didn’t know the details, Miriana noona rode this momentum all the way to the owner, then negotiated what was essentially a threat.
Overwhelmed by Miriana noona, the owner accepted all the conditions she set forth.
In essence, Miriana noona became the de facto ruler of that brothel.
I listened with great interest to Miriana noona’s story, my eyes shining and expressing my admiration through words and gestures throughout.
“Wow… You’ve been extremely active and eventful during this week.”
“Who am I? I am none other than Miriana, the Queen of the Night. Ohohohohoho!”
Miriana noona laughed loudly, making a sound like what a noble lady or princess might make, clearly delighted.
“If I hadn’t gotten sick, I would have had real power like now… Well, I seized control in one go while getting my revenge.”
“Congratulations.”
“Thank you. This is all thanks to Jin-sang.”
“I feel proud when you say that. So now will you arrange patients for me to treat? As the number of treatment patients increases, my reputation will grow too, right?”
“Ah, um… about that, Jin-sang…”
Suddenly, Miriana noona started to stutter.
What’s this?
This feels unsettling.
“After my incident, it seems the boss, having some sense, had thoroughly implemented disease prevention and such? So right now, there aren’t really any patients from our establishment to introduce to you. And I can’t just tell the girls to get sick or hurt themselves, right?”
“Meaning?”
“There are no patients now! Sorry!”
Miriana noona put her palms together against her cheeks and apologized with a smile.
Hey, lady.
That’s different from what you said before!
My head went blank.
