Rauk swung for Kai's head. Kai ducked, stepped inside, and slammed a forearm into Rauk's broken jaw. The captain reeled, breath hissing. Kai would have ended him, but two more points flashed. He flowed back, took a shallow cut on his forearm plate, then ripped one spear away and ran its owner through with his own weapon.

A man on Kai's right made a desperate lunge. Kai let the point scrape his side, grabbed the shaft, yanked, and drove the butt into the man's larynx.

The crescent was thinner now. Fear ate at discipline. Some still fought clean; some jabbed with panic.
"Hold the line!" Rauk snarled, blood running down his throat. "Hold!"
They tried. Kai did not let them.
He sprinted three steps, planted his spear, vaulted over a stab he couldn't parry, landed behind a pair, and cut them both across the spine in one short arc.

He turned and put his point through a visor slit of a man who had forgotten to blink.

Another team died. Sand drank quietly.
A four-star with good stance and calm eyes stepped forward, set his spear, and made a simple, perfect thrust at Kai's belly. Kai almost respected it. He slid his own shaft down and turned the blade at the last instant, then stepped into the man's guard, grabbed the helm, and snapped the neck with a fast twist.

Two charged in rage. Kai sidestepped the first and let him trip over a fallen shield. He caught the second's spear under his arm, wrenched it free, and drove it back into the man's heart.

He breathed through his nose, slow. He kept the engine steady. The cores were still there. The night was still his.
Azhara drifted left, eyes on the far lip. No ambush. No new line. Good. She swept a knife across the back of a knee when a four-star tried to sprint around. He fell yelling. She folded back into dark. Kai ended the yell before it carried.

Rauk and three more boxed him. Kai used the box. He let them close tight, then drove up with his legs and shoulders, shoving all four in different angles at once. They stumbled. He picked one, the slowest to reset, and took him clean.

Another swung wide; Kai stepped in under the arc and drove his elbow into that man's ribs. Cracking sound. A breath cut short. A quick stab finished the rest.

The crescent was a rag now, bent and ugly, more gaps than wall.
Half the remaining men didn't look at Kai. They watched Rauk. Their courage lived in his jaw. That jaw was purple and swelling. Blood bubbled when he breathed hard.
"Attack on his legs. Fucking idiots!" he tried again, voice raw.
Kai answered with a smash that knocked the last three in the center onto their backs. He planted his spear into the sand as if staking the night down, vaulted, and landed with both feet on a chest. The chest caved. The man's eyes went wide and then dim.

A four-star tried to catch Kai's ankle as he stepped off. Kai crushed the hand under his heel. The man screamed and rolled. Kai put him out of pain.

Another made the mistake of turning to run. Azhara's arrow pinned his foot to the sand. He looked down, stunned. Kai closed the distance in three strides and ended him clean.

Kai's breath steamed in the cooling air. He made himself breathe slower. He could go hot and bright and burn out, or he could stay hot enough and finish. He chose to finish.
"Kill him! Kill him! Kill him!"
Three came at once, screaming — men who had broken and were trying to scare their own fear away. Screams didn't stop Kai. He took the first with a slash across the mouth, the second with a point to the heart, the third with a spear butt cracking temple. Then he added the blade, because temple cracks don't always kill clean.

Rauk tried to drag the tail of the formation back into a straight line. He didn't have enough tail left. He rushed Kai, rage driving the hurt. Kai let him come, met the point, slid it aside, and smashed Rauk's wrist again. The spear fell. Rauk snarled and swung with his fist, huge and heavy. Kai took it on armor and answered with two hard jabs to the liver. Rauk's breath caught. He fell to one knee, forced himself up, and spat more blood.
Kai saw the opening to end him. He didn't take it, not yet. He wanted the rest of the line gone first. No one left to stab him in the back while he looked down at the captain.
He pivoted away from Rauk and carved through the three who had tried to use Kai's focus as cover. One, two, three—rib, throat, heart.
