Chapter 43 - Even the Police in This World Have Jinxes
The man called Minus had never doubted since childhood that he was a chosen one.
He did everything he wanted to do, and did everything he could. Alcohol, food, objects. He obtained and took whatever he wanted to have by any means.
His family had money, and also the power to achieve whatever they wanted. Because of that, people bowed their heads and trembled in fear before him. People would swallow even lye if he told them to.
He had done everything he could throughout his life – but if asked to pick what he found most enjoyable, Minus would choose killing people.
From fools who followed him around dazzled by his good treatment to those who didn’t know their place and acted cocky. He had fairly ended their lives with his own hands.
The first time he killed someone was an accident. It started when he hit someone in anger and they died.
But the sense of omnipotence Minus felt when he first killed someone was something that couldn’t be matched by any drug.
To feel that sensation again, no, to feel an even greater pleasure, he started using a special anesthetic he made for murder while searching for various methods.
As a result, Minus was able to obtain exactly what he wanted. The pleasure of toying with and taking the life of a person trembling in fear but unable to move a finger!
The eyes filled with despair of a person who knows what’s going to happen but can’t do anything! Minus came to enjoy murder so much that he thought if he could solidify those eyes, they would become the most expensive jewels in the world.
As time passed, Minus, who continued killing as he became addicted to that pleasure, became interested in a drug said to grant superpowers that he learned about by chance.
The reason was simple. How much more creatively could he kill people if he, a special person, gained the power of superpowers? It was because of such a simple expectation.
He was eventually caught while testing the power after obtaining that superpower – but he was released as if nothing had happened in the end.
That’s what the life of a chosen person was like. Forgiven and tolerated no matter what you do.
Minus could laugh. Even that damn father who had confined him for being mentioned in the media died alone like a stray dog.
There’s no one left to stop him anymore. He had been scared of the being called ‘that person’, but that fool sent him enough superpower awakening drug for hundreds of people.
Whether it’s charges of manufacturing superpower awakening drugs or whatever, it seems they intended to bring him down, but did they think he’d be taken down so easily? That will never happen.
With these idiot humans, the large amount of superpower awakening drugs, and his own ability, he can control numerous superpower users as his limbs, kill even the person called ‘that person’, and become the king of this country.
Minus was confident. He thought that even if New Hope appeared again, he wouldn’t lose anymore.
Then his father who looked down on him, his shitty siblings, none of them would be able to look down on him anymore.
This whole world will kneel before him. Because the man called Minus is a chosen one.
Surely, surely it was like that, but?
“…Huh?”
Minus suddenly opened his eyes while wandering in memories as hazy as a dream.
In what looked like an operating room in a hospital, Minus was standing tied up in mid-air.
The smell of disinfectant was so strong it hurt his nose, and looking only at the surgical instruments that seemed to be thoroughly sterilized, it looked like an ordinary operating room.
But brushes, varnish, and other chemical products that shouldn’t be in an operating room were also present, so Minus wondered why those items were there together rather than why he was here.
But that was only for a moment. Minus furrowed his brow, trying to recall how he ended up here, looking at the restraints binding his arms and legs so he couldn’t move an inch.
Surely, New Hope appeared and attacked him. Minus called all the superpower users in the research lab as if he had been waiting and attacked her.
And… he was utterly defeated. Over 30 superpower users were subdued in the blink of an eye, and New Hope slammed him into the ground.
Overwhelming strength incomparable to before. Minus struggled. He tried to buy time using the unconscious detectives in the basement, tried to use his ability on New Hope.
But as if mocking all those struggles, he was thrown to the ground, sent flying, and beaten several times until he collapsed. Just before completely losing consciousness, a strange being wearing a Hahoe mask and a long coat appeared before him and saved him…?
“You’re awake.”
While Minus was recalling his memories, someone opened the door and entered.
Minus hardened his expression and looked at the person who entered. The one who entered the operating room was none other than the pitch-black being wearing a Hahoe mask.
“- Ah, you’ve finally come. I was a bit worried I wouldn’t be able to thank my benefactor who saved me. Fortunately, you’ve returned?”
Minus said so while glaring at the Hahoe mask being with cold eyes.
The Hahoe mask being was rumored in the underworld to be ‘that person’s’ limb and there were many rumors about them in various ways.
When Minus learned that the Hahoe mask being was a powerful superpower user thanks to their appearance being captured fighting New Hope during the Justice incident, he classified this being as a dangerous person.
Even if they saved him from New Hope, given that he woke up with his limbs tied in a place like this, there’s no way the Hahoe mask being saved him out of pure goodwill.
For what purpose did the Hahoe mask being save him? Minus maintained his silence but didn’t take his eyes off the Hahoe mask being looking at him.
The Hahoe mask being broke the silence that could have continued indefinitely and spoke while keeping their gaze fixed on him.
“[What will you do?]”
“That’s right. I thought about it a bit – but there’s really nothing interesting about this person.”
Minus trembled at the voice suddenly heard next to him. The delicate voice of a woman was coming from right beside him, not from anywhere else.
She was a beautiful woman with long blonde hair and blue eyes. Her small frame contrasted with her large chest, and the white shirt supporting that chest drew attention – a beauty that even Minus would be captivated by if he met her passing by.
That woman was sitting next to Minus reading something. Minus tilted his head seeing what the woman was reading.
When did a woman with this appearance appear next to him? No, more than that, what is she reading now? In the first place, who is this woman? How did he not even notice her existence when she’s right in front of him?
As questions piled up one after another, the woman seemed to finish reading the contents written in the notebook and made a “hmm” sound as she closed it.
That woman looked at Minus with eyes so cold and emotionless it was frightening, as if looking at a pebble on the roadside, and said:
“You’re curious about why you’re here, who I am, and what this notebook I was reading is? Don’t worry. I’ll tell you slowly, one by one.”
“Ah, it’s not particularly out of kindness. Originally I was going to take care of it while you were asleep, but I thought it would be better to do this while you’re conscious, so don’t misunderstand.”
The woman speaking in a tone as if he was lowly and boring drew out the words “First-” and began. As she began, the Hahoe mask being seemed to understand her intention from those brief words and approached.
They respectfully received the red-covered notebook from the woman’s hand and opened it to show Minus, who had his limbs tied.
Minus unconsciously looked at the woman and the notebook, then widened his eyes seeing the contents written in that notebook.
“Th-This is…?!”
“April 13th. Cloudy. Gangdong-gu Cheonho-dong Olympic-ro 60-gil. Brown-haired woman. Kidnapped by car using drugs. In the basement torture room of the residence, paralyzed the body using special drugs, then cut off genitals, cut off breasts, damaged eyeballs and inflicted about 60 other injuries before killing.”
“Then on April 20th, met a black-haired woman in a navy jacket at a club in Amsa-dong, put her in a hallucinatory state with drugs and sent her home with instructions to kill her whole family – boring. The killing methods and use of abilities are predictable and nothing special. Hah, the 25 seconds I spent reading this are too wasteful…”
A notebook recording who Minus kidnapped where and how, what process he went through to kill them, what drugs he used, and so on.
Minus broke out in a cold sweat looking at that notebook. Who on earth made such a notebook? Where did this item that only he could have written come from?
If this notebook falls into the hands of the police, they would surely be able to find evidence that he committed murder.
The reason he had been able to leave no evidence until now was partly because he had been thorough in cleaning up afterwards, but also largely because he hid exactly where incidents occurred by kidnapping from outside CCTV view,
Or by using his ability to lure victims to the destination.
But if there was something that could accurately tell the location where incidents occurred like this…? Minus gritted his teeth and glared at the blonde woman.
He’s already wanted by the police on charges of possessing superpower awakening drugs, but
If he escapes abroad and some time passes, he can return to this country without any problems. If not for that notebook, that is.
Whether it’s the law or whatever, there’s nothing in this country that can’t be solved with money. That was his thought, and it was also an undeniable fact.
Knowing that, Minus had already finished preparations to escape abroad through illegal routes even if things went wrong, and prepared lobby funds to give to people in the legal world.
It was a thorough preparation to the point of being shabby. But given that he was defeated by New Hope without being able to do anything, those preparations would have been meaningless in the first place.
Of course, Minus himself would deny that.
Minus slowly continued his thoughts.
He wants to snatch the notebook from that woman even if he has to use his ability, but for some reason his body feels heavy and he can’t use his ability. He doesn’t even know where he is right now.
The Hahoe mask being is not someone he can defeat head-on either. Considering all these facts. Minus has no choice but to follow whatever that blonde woman holding the notebook says.
“…Fine. I’ve lost. So what do you intend to make me do?”
“Huh? What nonsense are you talking about? I’m going to kill you.”
“…What?”
Minus thought. For now, let’s move as that woman orders and kill her later. But the blonde woman spoke simply as if mocking such thoughts from Minus, saying she would kill him.
Why on earth? The reason for kidnapping him after shaking off the police and New Hope wasn’t money, power, or anything else, but just to kill him?
It doesn’t make sense. It’s illogical. But – there was no sign of joking or lying in that woman’s cold eyes.
Minus felt goosebumps all over his body for a moment. He felt the difference in biological rank from those eyes for an instant. Minus trembled.
If an ant had human-level intelligence and saw a huge tiger, what would it think? The huge body and sharp fangs. And even the killing intent exuded as an apex predator.
Surely that ant would feel the difference in biological rank and sense death. Because that huge monster wouldn’t even realize it killed the ant if it stepped on it.
And – now Minus, the man called Minus who had always been a chosen being, has become a small ant before a huge tiger. The being before his eyes was that much of a huge monster.
“This notebook is from your – what was it? The thing with genetic connections.”
“Ah right. Left by your father. It seems he left it along with his will as a last familial affection as family – well, it’s none of my business.”
The woman said so and tore up the notebook as if it was uninteresting. The notebook burns and disappears hopelessly easily. Under the ash scattering in the air, the woman slowly continued speaking.
Like a devil holding everything in the world in the palm of her hand.
“As for who I am – right, the person you call ‘that person’. The one who made the superpower awakening drug and controls this country from behind, yes that whatever. That’s me.”
“Next, why you’re here. Ah, I already said this. You’re here because you’re going to be killed from now on. I brought you to kill you with my own hands.”
Minus felt dizzy as he took in the content of the words the blonde woman was spitting out in a light tone as if talking about that night’s dinner menu.
The woman before his eyes is ‘that person’ he was so afraid of. And the reason for kidnapping him was to kill him directly?
It’s an unbelievable story, and Minus felt his heart suddenly start pounding wildly at this being that suddenly appeared.
“I-I see. So I seem to have irritated you that much?”
Dangerous. I’m going to die. Minus felt the shadow of death approaching right up to his nose and felt as if his heart was falling to his feet.
But his shabby pride made him put on a mask feigning calmness even in such a situation. Of course, it was such a thin mask that anyone looking closely could tell he was trembling in fear.
The blonde woman slowly blinked seeing Minus like that. The woman’s long eyelashes fluttered with the movement.
Even that small action was completely beautiful – but that appearance no longer registered in Minus’s eyes.
What was contained in the woman’s eyes looking at Minus was disgust and contempt. Nothing else was contained. Eyes that made you wonder if there would be more emotion even looking at a cockroach on the street?
“That’s right. You did irritate me. You irritated me by being too incompetent.”
The woman started speaking while dropping even the slight politeness she had maintained, and at the same time her face twisted as if everything about Minus was utterly worthless.
“I deliberately sent you that much awakening drug. And all you did with it was create and control superpower users? Was that really all? Please! You could have done so much more! Becoming the king of this country with that much power?! Good gracious! Isn’t this level of stupidity a crime?!”
The woman scratched her arm as if she couldn’t stand Minus’s existence. But that was only for a moment. She sighed deeply as if tired and spoke looking down at the floor.
“Taking my place? Fine, alright. I can forgive that. Do it if you can. No one gets angry at an ant crawling on their shoe, right?”
“Even doing stupid things with what I deliberately gave you, fine. I’m the one who expected Deputy Chief to show some new reactions, but not everyone in the world can be like Deputy Chief.”
“But. So strangely…”
The woman approaches Minus. Minus almost screamed seeing the woman’s eyes as she approached.
Her face was hideously twisted with something that could be called a demonic aura emanating from her. Minus had never imagined a human face could be filled with such anger.
After seeing that frightening face, Minus naturally wondered. Why did this woman harbor such anger towards him?
As Minus looked at the woman with such a question, the woman answered as if responding to Minus’s question, grabbing his collar and shouting:
“So incredibly strangely…! I…! The fact that a worm like you tried to kill Deputy Chief, makes me so angry I can’t stand it!”
When the woman bared her fangs and got angry, Minus’s clothes that she grabbed tore with a ripping sound.
How strong is her grip for an expensive fabric shirt to tear so easily like wet paper! Minus was shocked, and the woman laughed.
“I’m the only one who can kill him?! Is that such bullshit?! I don’t know! I’m going crazy! I want to be by his side! I want him to see me! But the fact that a bastard like you tried to kill that person makes me insanely angry!”
“Even waiting for New Hope instead of me… it really, makes me, so angry! Isn’t it wonderful? I have no idea why!! Hahaha! Haha! The unknown! It’s really so wonderful!”
The woman laughed like a madman who had lost her reason, saying she didn’t know why she was acting like this.
But Minus felt suffocated seeing that face. What kind of experience does a person have to go through to harbor such madness? No, in the first place, is that woman really the same kind of person as him?
Convinced that he would surely die if he remained before this madwoman, Minus shouted with a desperate heart:
“Pl-Please spare me! Money? Do you need money?! I’ll prepare as much as you want! People too, I’ll bring whatever you want! The person you’re talking about is Detective Lee Mun-su, right?! Then I! With my ability! I can somehow give that person to you! So!”
So please spare me! Minus tried to shout, but. Before he could finish speaking, the woman suddenly stopped laughing as if a faucet had been turned off.
Then she picked up a scalpel with a blade attached and a syringe filled with an unknown drug that were next to her. Seeing this, Minus was convinced. This woman has no intention of keeping him alive at all.
Minus struggled to undo his restraints, but they wouldn’t come loose.
From the electric saw to scissors and box cutters in the operating room. Now that he knew what purpose those would be used for, he trembled in indescribable fear.
But the woman easily subdued Minus and injected the drug in the syringe. In contrast to her face overflowing with hatred and madness just moments ago, she spoke with a radiant smile like the Virgin Mary:
“Now then. I’ll cut open your belly, take out your intestines, and make you into the most wonderful work of art. Don’t worry. I’ve done this often. I’ve done a wonderful job even with people smaller than you.”
Minus tried to beg to be spared again, but his mouth wouldn’t open. No, not even his tongue would move.
Minus finally realized the identity of the drug that had just entered his body. It was the special anesthetic he used when killing people.
A drug that allows you to feel pain just the same, but you can’t move a finger. Minus was terrified imagining the pain that would follow, just like the victims he had killed.
This can’t be how I die. I shouldn’t die like this. Minus continued many thoughts that couldn’t be put into words.
But with a squelch, the scalpel cut open Minus’s belly.
He could no longer think after that.
