Chapter 139
Before playing, the viewer found this game on the game recommendation board. It was suggested as a game that can be played without much thought.
Games that are good for mindless play typically fall into two categories.
First, there are physical games that keep the body busy instead of the brain—like rhythm games that many people play.
Second, there are games where you can think, but the outcome doesn’t really change whether you think or not.
These are commonly referred to as luck-based failure games. Most of these games are heavily influenced by chance, so there’s really no need to be too careful in your choices.
The only struggle players can engage in is somehow increasing the fixed probabilities of their outcomes.
And this game, Surviving the Nuclear War, clearly belonged to the latter category.
It makes sense because the game suddenly fell apart.
– Day 33*
The game has ended! Your house has been invaded by armed robbers! You’ve become a target for passing thieves! Oh dear, what terrible luck!
“This narrative tone sounds oddly frustrating. So, is it because of bad luck that the entire family was wiped out? It feels like a joke. Is it reasonable to die before even lasting a month?”
[Your house was flooded earlier.]
[Why is this person so unlucky?]
[Guess this is common in an apocalypse, LOL.]
[It’s funny that this is the only realistic part, haha!]
[How about lowering the difficulty? The hell mode must have high natural disaster rates.]
[Would the leader lower the difficulty for pride’s sake? Ha, LOL.]
“I’ll lower the difficulty. Hell mode didn’t seem to work out well.”
Returning to the game start screen, I adjusted the difficulty from hell to hard. I thought it’d be manageable after the tutorial, but that was a big mistake.
I couldn’t clear it even after three tries. Just when I thought everything was running smoothly, my family members kept dying one by one for some bizarre reason.
Simply put, it was just unfair. And the way to reduce that unfairness was to lower the game’s difficulty.
I didn’t have a tendency to enjoy torturing myself, so I adjusted the difficulty to hard.
I suppose the viewers thought I’d never lower the difficulty, but that’s not true. I’m not the kind of person to be prideful over trivial matters.
Especially since this game was not one that involved much skill. Getting heated over a luck-based failure game is a sad thing. Quitting the highest difficulty doesn’t mean I’m a bad player; my gaming pride wouldn’t be hurt in the least.
From the perspective of a rational and cool-headed intellectual like me, that was the right decision.
So, the game began again on hard mode, and given my experience, I quickly gathered the necessary items.
[Look at that farming speed, damn!]
[Dad casually throwing his family members around like items…]
[The weight of a breadwinner!]
[Packed up nicely; unless he encounters unfairness, there shouldn’t be a shortage of food in the early stages.]
– Day 4*
Today is my son’s birthday. After sneaking into the shelter
, I struggled to keep track of the days but managed to remember it without forgetting. It’s my youngest son’s 10th birthday, and despite everything, kids keep growing! They’ll need to eat well to grow properly… Let’s celebrate the 10-year-old!Is there something he might want? Item list – (Chess board, novel, gun, axe… can be skipped)
“These people don’t seem serious enough. In this situation, what birthday? Just being alive is a blessing itself. If I don’t give a gift again, my son’s mental stats could drop.”
[Even in an apocalypse, the innocence of childhood must be preserved.]
[Gimme, come on!]
[Throw him a novel anyway; at this point, it’s only him reading it.]
[A novel might be the most useless gift, LOL.]
I threw him the least useful novel and sang him a song.
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear son, happy birthday to you!”
[Chchchchch]
[Omedeto!]
[He’s grumbling but you still sang for him, LOL.]
[Is this the trendy tsundere concept?]
[May you grow up healthy~ Don’t run away in anger suddenly~]
[Though he seems cold on the outside, he’s warm on the inside!]
[Sweet Mollru taking good care of the kids.]
“If we’re gonna do it, we gotta do it right!”
– Seems my son is happy. His condition changes from ‘depressed’ to ‘normal.’
His mental stats returned to normal. For a single birthday greeting, I got off cheap.
If sadness or anxiety lingers for days, it could lead to madness, causing them to run away with supplies or suddenly darting outside without returning.
Such behavior doesn’t end with one person; it negatively impacts the entire community. It’s a kind of chain reaction.
– Day 9*
It’s not an easy task to go out into the desert with sandstorms, but someone has to do it. With luck, you might find another group of survivors or gather information, food, etc.
It’s time to embark on an expedition. Choose the person to go on the expedition. (Max 1 person, can be skipped)
“Who should I send this time…?”
In the past, I would have sent my daughter without hesitation. She performed splendidly in every expedition and returned successfully every time.
However, it troubled me that my daughter came back looking grotesque after her last expedition.
The veins bulging on her skin and her purple-tinted skin were no longer human. Was it a miracle she managed to return in that state? But she had transformed into a monster void of reason, fitting her horrific appearance.
[Isn’t sending the daughter gonna turn her into a dotor again?]
[If she turns into a doctor again, I won’t clear it this time LOL! I was shocked seeing her mom’s face.]
[It’s probably safer to send dad instead?]
[What happens if I skip? Starve to death?]
“I’ll safely send dad. He hasn’t had any failures so far.”
I sent my father outside the shelter, heavily armed with a gas mask, axe, and gun.
– He must bring back results.
His back looked broader than usual today. Suddenly, a flood of emotional chats came up.
The weight of a breadwinner… Dad, how have you lived like this? Sorry you’re a bit of a loser. But I still gotta watch Mollru’s stream.
I can’t tell if they’re serious or not, but I can’t empathize with their words.
I was an orphan who lost both my mother and father. I couldn’t know the feelings of someone raised under parental protection during their youth.
For a moment, negative emotions surged up but then quickly faded. I thought of I Ji-eun’s family, which I now considered my own, although they weren’t by blood.
That’s right; I, too, now have a family. Just the other day, I was responsible for my precious dongsaeng’s return from school in my new car.
Thinking of that, I found myself getting a bit emotional, just like the viewers.
After the nuclear war broke out, the world was a dangerous place. A father heading out, while a fox-like wife and rabbit-like children waited at home…
I can’t let this 4-person family perish.
According to the viewers, even if one of the parents survives, the game is considered cleared regardless of how many die, but that seemed too sad. I felt I had to see them get a happy ending.
Of course, that was something that would happen regardless of my will. This game had a strong element of luck. Still, I tried my best to make sure at least one wouldn’t perish.
As a result, I got to see the ending where all four survived, just as I wished.
– Day 139*
We’re alive! We’ve been rescued by the military. Our whole family has survived and can leave this shabby shelter! Our family’s future will have nothing but sunny and bright days…
[Kya!]
[Switched to hard and cleared right away]
[All survived, damn! Is this Mollwang?]
[Nice, cleared without any unfairness, LOL!]
[nuclear survival clear LOL]
“Ah, we did it…”
Having put quite a bit of effort into it, I felt a subtle sense of accomplishment. Just then, as the credits rolled, I caught a glimpse of the family photo showing their current status, and I got lost in thought for a moment.
[Frank.js has donated 10,000 won!]
-Congratulations on the clear; I was surprised by your gameplay. I who can’t play well have never cleared it even once. It must be the skill of a nuclear power? A simulation of nuclear war that’s always prepared. Truly impressive.
[Woah!]
[Nuclear power?]
[They seem confused between the North and South.]
[Waving a red flag! Damn!]
[Was the leader a defector?]
[Defector, LOL!]
It’s common for foreigners to confuse North and South Korea.
The small peninsula to the east is divided, and people around the world don’t realize how vastly different the lifestyles in the north and south are. It’s normal not to know unless you’re particularly interested.
Some believe South Korea is still quite dangerous because it’s in a state of ceasefire. Of course, being in a ceasefire doesn’t mean it’s safe, but it’s safe enough compared to how they imagine it is.
“Yangbong, what are you talking about?”
I replied, holding back laughter.
