Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Valkyrie
Many years ago, Asgard witnessed a brutal conflict—a family power struggle that turned into a full-blown coup. The outwardly noble Odin struck ruthlessly from within, sending an elite force—the Valkyrie—to confront Hela.
Unlike the Valkyries of Norse mythology, the real Valkyries were not mere guides for fallen warriors; they were some of Asgard's mightiest fighters, second only to Odin and Hela herself. Yet even their combined strength was no match for Hela, whose Necrosword was a super-weapon rivaling Mjolnir.
In the end, nearly every Valkyrie perished, leaving only one survivor. She was left broken, haunted by guilt over the loss of her sisters. Unable to bear her defeat, she fled Asgard, ending up on Sakaar under the alias Scrapper No. 142. She eventually became one of the Grandmaster's primary fighters. Over time, the Valkyrie became a legend in Asgard, a figure remembered but unnamed.
This Valkyrie, however, was unlike any of the well-known warriors from Asgard's past. She was the last to join, and her distinctive looks often set her apart. Few knew her true identity, even among Asgardians.
Thor watched her enter the Grandmaster's office, preparing to negotiate her latest task. He decided to follow her in.
"Hey, good brother, you're here!" the Grandmaster greeted Thor with open arms, trying to pull him into a hug, but Thor stepped away swiftly.
With his awe-inspiring thunder powers, raw strength, and surprising agility, Thor had become a major draw for the arena. The Grandmaster privately mused that Thor could probably just sit on the field sewing, and he'd still sell tickets.
Nodding at the Grandmaster, Thor turned to Valkyrie. "How about we chat somewhere more private?"
She regarded him with a wary look. "I don't think there's anything to discuss."
"Oh, I think there is," Thor replied, his tone serious. "Because you are a Valkyrie."
She froze, her expression hardening. "No, I'm not. I'm a scrapper."
"You're running away," Thor said firmly. "But running won't solve anything."
The Grandmaster interjected, "I feel like if there's some misunderstanding between you two, a little talk might be in order. After all, you could work it out and—who knows?—make a good decision together." His support was clearly in Thor's favor.
Valkyrie looked from the Grandmaster back to Thor. "So you're Odin's son? No wonder. Look, Your Highness, I'm not interested. I won't get involved in your family drama. Last time I got involved in that mess, I lost everything. Whatever's happening in Asgard now doesn't concern me."
The Grandmaster grimaced, realizing he'd only made things worse.
As Thor thought about how to respond, a new system notification appeared in his mind.
"Ding! Congratulations to the host for triggering Valkyrie's exclusive mission: Brave Souls. Once, the Valkyrie were Asgard's strongest warriors, but they fell in a devastating civil war. Now, you must redeem their souls and allow them peace."
Mission Objective: Free the souls of the 28 fallen Valkyrie. Mission Reward: Artifact—Soul Castle.
Soul Castle: Contains a vast hall capable of guiding the souls of fallen Valkyrie, allowing them to find rest. When summoned, their heroic spirits can attach to the host and be reborn within the Soul Castle after death.
The realization struck Thor—this would mean having the Valkyrie Guard at his side once again.
His expression hardened. "You're right," he said to Valkyrie, "the sword of a Valkyrie is meant to protect Asgard and its people, not to serve personal ambition."
"But you should know… Ragnarök is coming. If we can't survive it, Asgard will be destroyed entirely."
Thor held her gaze, letting his words sink in, before adding, "For Asgard's future, I'll do what it takes to reach an agreement with Hela. I'll free your sisters' soul and bring back the legacy of the Valkyrie in Asgard."
