I AM THE CENTER OF THEIR ATTENTION

Chapter 7: A DANGEROUS MAN

Instead of paying attention to the old man, Kervin simply walked up to Hazel and dragged her to the corner where there was a wide window.

She couldn't stop staring at him as he lowered her onto one of the chairs before making his way to the door, but before that, he gave her a stern warning.

"Don't get up and none of you should make her move or I'll eat your heads." Saying that, he walked out of the building, leaving everyone perplexed.

"Who is that man?" The mother of the late boy demanded.

"Ma'am, you're making a big deal out of nothing. Why are you putting the blame on the wrong person when you clearly took him back to his father," Mr Obed calmly intervened.

"I did no such thing!" The woman denied.

And while they were handling the issue, Hazel silently sat there as she looked out the window just to find him walking down the road before standing there to stare at her. It was creepy and very funny at the same time.

He could just sit in front of her and stare to his heart's content if he wanted but he chose to stare from afar.

Wait!

Hazel's brain rebooted when she realized she had actually let him sit her down. How?

She quickly got up and hurried to the door.

"Hazel! Where are you going!" One of the aunties called but she ignored her as she opened the front door and hurriedly outside.

The man stood at the exact spot while looking at her in annoyance.

"What are you doing?" She yelled her question before even getting to him.

"Why did you get up?" He calmly asked.

"Kervin! I don't know you and I don't know what you're trying to do here but you need to stop!" She made sure to stress every single word.

"And what exactly am I doing, Hazel?" He calmly asked back.

"You're being weird," she said.

"Then that's perfect. I want you to be on your toes everytime you see me," he cheerfully said and she glared at him.

"You should leave."

"And if I don't, what will happen?" he asked and moved closer to her in an intimidating way.

Without saying a word, she turned around and headed back to the orphanage home.

When she entered and shut the door behind her, Kervin turned and smiled when he found Psalm standing some distance away from him with his eyes squinted at him in a glare.

"What's the problem? Did something get in your eye? Let me help you blow it out," Kervin happily offered but made no effort.

"Why exactly are you here?" Psalm inquired.

"Isn't it obvious? To get her soul."

The way he said it with nonchalance irked Psalm but he remained calm.

"And of all people in the world, it's her soul that attracts you more?" Psalm gingerly asked as he walked up to Kervin.

"Don't you know how demons are? We latch ourselves onto the best victims until we're satisfied and have gotten what we want," he reminded the angel.

"Let's see how you get her soul then," Psalm scoffed.

"Is that a dare?" Kervin asked in glee.

"I don't dare people nor do I bet on souls," he reminded the demon as he headed to the orphanage home.

"What about you? Out of all the souls in this world, why hers?"

At the demon's question, Psalm ignored him.

"What an egoistic angel." Kervin said in irritation as he walked away after looking at the window again just in case she was there.

"Your soul is mine, Hazel, I just need to hit the right buttons. And speaking of buttons, what's her background story?" Saying that, he walked away in excitement.

"Who is that man you were with, Hazel?" Obed worriedly inquired as he pulled her aside.

"The man I told you about, the one from my dreams," she recalled and he gasped in disbelief.

"He's the one!"

"Yes, is everything alright?" she became worried.

"He's a dangerous man. You should stay away from him by all means," he deeply warned her and from the way he stressed his words, she could tell how serious the matter was.

"Do you know him?" She curiously asked.

"I think he's into a very bad business. Do you know that a woman died in her home and he was the last one seen to step out before she was found dead. But nothing has been done about it."

At that horrible revelation, Hazel gasped in horror.

"You should be careful, Hazel. Maybe he specializes in killing women," Obed guessed and it set Hazel on edge as she remembered what he said to her not too long, ".....I want you to be on your toes everytime you see me."

It finally dawned on her that he was warning her. At that revelation, she shivered in fright.

"Mr Obed, the children are waiting," Klara reminded him and he nodded before leaving Hazel's side.

And as Hazel headed back into the visitor's room, she found Psalm speaking to the mother of the boy who died and at this point, she was crying profusely.

What was he saying to her?

And as if to make her more curious, the woman wrapped her arms around him and he comforted her without question.

When he looked in Hazel's direction, he smiled sadly.

"He seems to have a way with words. Look how calm she is now, like she just found peace," Cloe pointed out the obvious and it made Hazel begin to feel a certain kind of way.

When the woman had calmed down, he escorted her outside and since Hazel was too curious, she went to the window side to observe them.

Psalm took her to her car and said something to which she nodded before entering the car.

For a while, he stood there watching the car till she drove out before he turned around and his gaze instantly went to where Hazel stood, making her eyes go wide like she had been caught doing something forbidden.

Nonetheless, since she was already caught, she simply looked away while still seated there.

Not too long after, Psalm walked in through the front door and came to where she was seated.

By this time no one was around except them.

"Are you alright, Hazel?"

At his question, she nodded and toyed with her hair while looking everywhere but him.

He was a really fine man and these days, she didn't know why she was beginning to give him extra attention.

Without saying a word, he went to sit right across her with the center table in-between them as he watched her closely.

She could sense his intense gaze on her but refused to look because she knew how much he affected her.

"She won't bother you anymore," he assured her and she looked at him in surprise.

"She won't?"

"Yes. I've spoken to her," he said.

"What did you say to her?" she curiously inquired but he didn't give an answer to it.

A weird but comfortable silence settled between them after that until she broke it.

"Psalm?"

"Yes?"

"I'll be taking the teenagers out shopping. Would you care to join us?"

At her request, he smiled and nodded.

"Anything for the kids," he said and she blinked due to how it sounded.

He made it sound like he was talking about their own children.

"Great! Let me get them." She said and stood up but he remained seated.

When she was about to leave, he stopped her.

"Was Kervin here to see you?"

"Yes," she truthfully said.

"Why?"

"It's complicated," she said and he frowned at her.

"Then uncomplicate it because he's dangerous," he warned.

This was the second time she was getting the same warning saying 'He's a dangerous man' and at this point, she felt she should really take it seriously.

"Ok," Hazel simply said and wanted to go when he said something else.

"He derives joy from people's misfortune, so I'd advise you to stir clear from him."

At that shocking revelation, she looked at him.

"I thought you didn't know him."

"Well, it turns out I do," he revealed in all seriousness.
