Chapter 143: Trials [20]
"Hah, check out what I made!"
Serena held out her hands proudly, a colorful rubber band stretched in a complicated crisscross pattern between her fingers.
Stray curls of green hair fell across Rashira's cheek as she leaned closer and said, "Wow… you're really good at this," genuinely impressed.
"Hehe~ I know, right?" Serena flashed a triumphant grin. "If you want, I can teach you too."
"Really?" Rashira's eyes lit up with childlike curiosity.
"Yup! Here, put your fingers like this, and then twist it like... yeah, just like that."
Sigh!
Sevyr exhaled from his perch nearby, arms crossed, watching the two girls playing like carefree kids at a picnic.
Meanwhile, out in the forest, the rest of the participants were locked in absolute chaos.
Ambushes, sneak attacks, betrayals.
At first, they ganged up on one unfortunate soul… then turned on each other. After that, the remaining group cornered two more poor kids like predators circling prey.
Then—
Ding!
A sharp chime echoed through the forest.
Everyone froze.
"Attention, participants," an artificial voice rang out, laced with amusement.
"Since things were getting a little too boring… we've decided to spice things up."
"The hell?" Sevyr muttered, straightening up.
Serena and Rashira exchanged confused looks.
The forest fell into hushed silence as the voice continued.
"This trial has now been changed."
"WHAT!?" several participants shouted in unison.
"The tokens you were told to collect? They no longer matter. As of now, they hold no value."
"You've got to be kidding me…" Sevyr scowled.
"What the hell?" one boy muttered, clutching a glowing token.
"Wait… this might be our chance," another said, hope creeping into his voice.
The expressions of the exhausted and beaten-down participants began to shift—tension loosening, hope rising.
But then the voice returned.
"All you have to do now is battle each other."
A beat of silence.
"From this point on, your only objective is to eliminate each other."
""There will be two criteria for judgment. First, how many fellow participants you eliminate. Second, whether you yourself survive until the end."
"Only the top two hundred will earn admission to Azurean Academy," the announcer finished, his tone like silk over steel.
"And this trial… will only end when there is one participant left standing."
"So give us a good show."
"Don't disappoint us. We have very high hopes for all of you."
After the voice faded, no one moved.
They just stood there.
Postures tense, eyes darting, muscles coiled, silently measuring each other.
A moment of stillness stretched like a pulled string.
Then, one by one, all eyes turned to the trio standing calmly atop the stone platform.
No words were spoken.
Just a shared look. Then they nodded.
A silent agreement.
And then—
Whoosh!
Boom!
Whiiish!
ROAR!
Like a switch had flipped, the entire area erupted. A dozen participants lunged at the trio in unison.
----
Above the arena, the announcer hovered midair on a swirling platform of advanced wind magic. He brought the sound artifact to his lips, his voice amplified across the massive coliseum.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the wait is over! The final phase of our trials... begins now!"
The crowd roared.
Steel clashed against steel.
Spells lit up the skies.
Beasts howled and charged into the fray.
Emitting on the screens floating above the stadium.
"Go for it!!"
"YEAH! That's what I paid for! Wooooo!"
"Kick some ass, son! MAKE US PROUD!"
The announcer chuckled, bringing the artifact back to his lips. "Enjoying yourselves yet?!" he shouted, voice full of wild energy.
The crowd responded like a tidal wave.
"YEEAAAH!"
"It's better than my boyfriend!"
"Hey, babe, what's wrong with me?!"
"You are what's wrong."
"Worth every coin and every damn hour we waited!"
Laughing, the announcer twirled in the air and bellowed, "That's what I like to hear! We're just getting started! The forest is a battlefield, and your favorite contenders are right in the thick of it! So don't sit still, cheer your lungs out, scream their names, place your bets! There's a stall in every corner of the arena, so go wild, go crazy, and watch history unfold!"
With a dramatic flourish, he landed at the announcer's stand, the magic beneath his feet dispersing in a gust of wind.
The crowd exploded once more. The air shook with their roars.
----
As the spells ignited and surged toward them, Sevyr narrowed his eyes and raised both palms.
[Earth Wall!]
With a rumble, jagged stone pillars shot up from the ground, forming a barrier that blocked the incoming barrage of elemental spells.
But it was just a distraction.
Figures leapt over the wall—warriors mid-air, blades gleaming. Archers perched on tree branches drew their bows, their sights fixed. Growls echoed from all around as beasts circled them like predators stalking prey.
And yet, the trio just smirked.
"Come on, then. If you wanna play…" Serena grinned, drawing her twin short blades with a metallic whisper.
"Come, Kival. Vaendra." Rashira raised her wand, two glowing magic circles swirling open beside her as her summons stepped forth—one feline, one serpentine, both radiating magic pressure.
Sevyr stepped forward, calmly pointing a finger at the crowd gathering around them. "You really think ganging up on us is a good idea?"
A tall boy wielding a massive broadsword scoffed, "You might've gotten those tokens by dumb luck. Maybe you're some big-shot in disguise, I don't care. We outnumber you, badly. You've got no escape. You're going down."
Sevyr gave a lazy shrug. "Oh? You sure about that? I mean… outnumbering doesn't guarantee victory. We're strong. Really strong."His voice dropped a bit, eyes sharp and persuasive. "Why not fight with us instead of against us? Only 200 people get in, right? Look around—there's what, 20 or 30 of us here? If we team up, support each other, take down the rest, we all secure our spots. It's a win-win."
The boy blinked, hesitating. So did the others.
And that was exactly what Sevyr needed.
"[Inferno Blast.]"
He snapped his fingers.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Explosions detonated in quick succession across the field—beneath trees, behind rocks, and even under the feet of several unsuspecting participants. Ten bodies were flung into the air, glowing red as their fail-safes activated, teleporting them out of the trial grounds.
Eliminated.
"How—?!" the tall boy gasped, his face pale.
But he didn't get to finish.
CLANG!
A sharp arc of steel came from the side—Serena's blade. He barely raised his sword in time to block it, the impact sending a jolt through his arms.
"Oh? Pretty quick for a big guy." Serena smirked.
Before he could recover, she slammed her foot into his gut.
WHUMP!
The air whooshed from his lungs as he staggered backward, gasping.
"Hiiiyaah!"
Another figure dashed in—a girl wielding a reaper-like scythe, slicing toward Serena's flank.
But Serena spun and met the blow with ease, blades flashing.
CLANG!
"You're weak." she said flatly, brushing her backstep into a fluid counter.
The fight was on.And the trio wasn't backing down.
They were just getting warmed up.
Whiish!
Whiish!
Arrows sliced through the air, whistling straight for Sevyr's head.
But before they could land—
Clang!
A blur of fur and fang intercepted them. The Midnight Wolf—one of Rashira's summons—lashed out, shredding the arrows midair with a snarl.
"Careful, dumbass," Rashira called, blasting another unfortunate soul off their feet with a well-aimed fireball.
"Thanks, darling~" Sevyr grinned, glancing over his shoulder.
Rashira's cheeks flushed a soft pink, but she quickly masked it with a glare.
"We're in the middle of a battle, you idiot. Focus."
She hissed the words, but there was no real bite—just a hint of fluster beneath the fire.
Sevyr chuckled, turning back to the chaos.
"Okay, okay."
Another volley of arrows came streaking in. Without hesitation, he threw his hand up.
[Earth Wall!]
A wall of stone surged from the ground, the arrows thunking harmlessly against it.
Then, with a smooth motion, Sevyr lifted his right hand—curling his fingers into a loose fist, save for the extended index and middle finger—and pointed directly at the tree where the archers were perched.
"Boom."
BOOM!
The entire tree erupted in flames, splintering into blackened cinders.
But—
"Tch, these guys are fast."
The archers had already scattered, vanishing into the branches of nearby trees.
Not that Sevyr was about to let them breathe.
He raised both hands, his eyes glowing faintly.
"Let's clear the weeds."
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Explosions lit up the forest like a festival of fire. Trees shattered. Dirt blasted skyward. Screams rang out, only to be cut off mid-breath.
Anything that moved was targeted without mercy— ofcourse except his allies.
Some unfortunate participants didn't even have the chance to scream.
One second they were running—
The next, their bodies burst into motes of glowing white light as the academy's protection magic activated.
One bye one, their numbers thinned, from more than thirty to around 10 within few minutes.
Some of them were panting, few staggered and began crawling back but—
"Nah, uh."
Serena smirked as she swung her blade, eliminating all four fleeting figures in one slash.
Rashira and Seyvr didn't stayed idle either.
[Fireball!]
[Inferno Blast!]
Both of their blasts eliminated the remaining participants.
But before they could take a breath.
"Looks like fun's already started."
Before they could react.
Whoosh!
"Guah!"
Seyvr dropped on his knees, clutching his stomach.
