Chapter 119: Let's Earn Money
Raven crouched slowly beside the Thunder Drakelet, her eyes softening as the little beast lifted its head to look at her.
Its blue eyes were tired but alert, and as she extended her hand to gently pat its scaly forehead, it didn't resist.
Instead, it leaned slightly into her touch, a low, rasping purr rumbling in its throat.
Kai blinked. He hadn't seen it that relaxed in days.
Raven exhaled, then leaned forward and, with great care, pressed her forehead lightly to the Drakelet's.
Theron shifted beside Kai, but said nothing.
The air stilled.
A faint spark of static energy danced in Raven's braid.
Her eyes fluttered closed, and for a few seconds, nothing moved—not even the wind outside the cave.
Kai didn't say a word. He just watched her, arms folded, one brow slightly raised.
After a few moments, Raven pulled away.
The Drakelet blinked, its breathing a little more even now, and rested its chin on the cave floor. She stood, dusted off her knees, and turned to face Kai.
He tilted his head, brow still raised. "Well?"
She met his gaze and sighed. "I can help."
Kai waited.
"But…" she added, crossing her arms over her chest, "it's not something I can do just once. His core is too unstable—it's not just cracked, it's fragmented. I'll need time. Days. Maybe more. I'll have to regulate the flow of lightning essence through his damaged channels every morning, keep it steady."
Kai's gaze dropped to the Drakelet for a moment, then returned to her. "That all?"
"No." Her tone was quiet. "If I mess up even once, I could burn out what's left of his core. You'd lose him."
Kai's lips pressed into a line.
Theron frowned. "You sure about this, sis?"
Raven nodded. "He saved our lives, Theron. I can at least try."
Kai scratched his cheek, then gave her a look. "So you're saying I have to babysit you while you babysit him."
She smirked faintly. "More like I'll be keeping you in check if you piss him off."
Theron chuckled. "Sounds about right."
Kai sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Fine. We'll stay put for a while. I'll set up a few more wards around the area."
The Drakelet stirred and let out a soft, static-charged chirp, nudging Raven's leg.
She crouched again, patting its head. "We'll fix you. Promise."
Kai turned away, muttering, "Don't make promises you can't keep."
Raven didn't respond. She just continued stroking the blue scales as her lightning essence flickered faintly around her fingers.
Then she sat cross-legged in front of the Thunder Drakelet, her closing her eyes.
Sparks of lightning essence flickered around her fingers like fireflies caught in a storm.
Kai leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching her with sharp eyes. Theron stood nearby, arms folded, silent and tense.
"What are your ranks?" Kai asked, though he could sense it, but still wanted to confirm if they were suppressing with any artifact or not.
"I'm at Mid-Intermediate Core and she's at Low-Intermediate Core." Theron replied, voice firm.
Kai nodded, 'As expected, they're just weak, no wonder they got annihilated.'
[<Don't get cocky brat, he can really kill you if ever let your guard drop.>]
'Then why did they ran away from those beasts?'
[<It's just he need to hit you once and its game over for you.>]
'Tsk.'
He the shifted his attention to the scene unfolding ahead.
The Drakelet lay still between them, its breathing shallow but steady. A low hum built in the air, the atmosphere prickling like static before a storm.
Raven opened her eyes, their usual amber hue glowing faintly with violet currents. She placed one hand on the Drakelet's chest and the other on its forehead.
"Here we go," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else.
Kai's eyes narrowed. "Don't screw this up."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," she said dryly, but her tone lacked venom.
She took a deep breath and pushed her lightning essence inward. Threads of raw energy snaked from her palms into the Drakelet's damaged core.
The reaction was immediate.
The Drakelet convulsed, a sharp whine escaping its throat.
"Shit—" Raven hissed, pulling back slightly, adjusting the flow. "It's too volatile…"
Kai's body tensed.
He took a step forward. "If he starts seizing—"
"Don't," she snapped. "I need concentration."
Theron flinched. Kai held still.
Raven gritted her teeth.
Sweat began to bead on her forehead as she fought to contain the backlash.
Sparks burst from her hands like flares.
The Drakelet's eyes glowed briefly, and a ripple of lightning cracked across its scales.
"Too much… too much… damn it—" she whispered.
Her lightning surged again, but this time she adjusted, less brute force.
The violent flickers began to dim, replaced by steady pulses of deep blue light.
The Drakelet let out a long, trembling exhale.
Its limbs relaxed.
"Phew."
Raven sagged, her shoulders heaving with the effort.
Her hands still hovered just above its form, crackling faintly.
The storm in her veins had not yet quieted.
"I think…" she panted, "I stabilized the main channel."
Kai stepped closer, peering down at the Drakelet.
Its breathing had slowed. Its glow was dim, but no longer erratic.
He let out a deep exhale. "Not bad, Lightning Girl."
Raven shot him a tired glare. "Don't call me that."
Theron stepped forward and handed her a flask of water.
She took it with a grateful nod, gulping it down.
Kai crouched next to the beast, pressing two fingers gently to its neck. A faint thrum of lightning responded.
He glanced at her. "You've got steady hands."
She met his gaze, the barest trace of a smirk tugging at her lips. "Good thing I don't get nervous easily."
Kai rose and stretched. "Good. We've got six more mornings of this."
Raven groaned. "You better feed me well."
He smirked. "We'll see if you earn it."
Then he led them out of the cave.
"Where are we going exactly?" Theron said, walking beside Kai.
"This guardian of yours need money to feed you, don't I?" Kai replied, smirking.
Theron clicked his tongue, "Tch. Don't flatter yourself, you aren't anybody's guardian and we're already paying you back by taking care of your little pet."
Raven gave him a side-glance, "Theo."
"Tch, whatever."
Kai smirked, but didn't said anything.
Then-
Skree!
Vael circled above him, and sent a mental image.
"Now show me what you can do."
Raven narrowed her eyes, while Theron scoffed, "What you mean by that?"
Kai then gave a nod and Vael let out a sharp cry.
[<Taunt!>]
Garrrr!
Roooar!
HOOOWL!
Raven stiffened.
Theron's eyes widened.
"The fuck!"
