Chapter 442: Chapter 443: The Truth Of The Mutation
On the 59th floor of the dungeon, Alexander revisited the place he had once explored. After gently setting Lefiya down, he took a moment to survey the floor in front of him.
"This place is exactly the same as in the anime," Tiona remarked excitedly. Her eyes lit up as she pointed ahead. "Look, isn't that the Demi Spirit?"
Seeing the monstrous plant firsthand was a stark contrast to the depiction in the anime. Even for those familiar with the imagery, the experience of witnessing it in real life was both awe-inspiring and chilling.
"The last time I was here, it was just a flower bud," Alexander mused casually. "I took care of it then, but I didn't expect it to regrow so quickly—and it's already evolved into a full-fledged Corrupted Spirit. The respawn rate of these dungeon monsters is something else."
His tone was calm, almost indifferent, and his nonchalance was infectious. Hearing Alexander's remarks, the group felt a wave of relief. With Alexander here, they were confident this battle would go smoothly.
"Everyone, get ready! Follow the plan!" Finn commanded.
The adventurers snapped into formation, their expressions steeled for the fight ahead. As if responding to Finn's voice or sensing the intruders, the flower began to bloom.
Swish!
The massive petals unfurled, revealing the grotesque upper body of a woman at its center. A wave of malevolent energy burst forth, filling the air with tension.
Alexander observed the scene, nodding thoughtfully. "Hmm, this level of power? They can handle it without me stepping in."
Just as Alexander finished speaking, the Demi Spirit shuddered violently, shaking its petals. Suddenly—Bang! Bang!—massive stones began raining down from above. A deafening roar followed, reverberating through the cavern.
Roar!!!
Alexander's brows furrowed. "What's that sound?"
This wasn't something he remembered from his last visit. The 59th floor should have only housed the Demi Spirit and its associated monsters. Something was amiss, and Alexander knew it had to be connected to the dungeon's mutation.
The roar echoed again, louder this time. Moments later, the ground trembled, and a colossal figure emerged.
Standing over ten meters tall, the creature had a grotesque form covered in hundreds of enormous eyes. Each eye radiated an ominous energy, as if gazing into them could sap the soul.
"Impossible!" Finn exclaimed, his voice tinged with disbelief. "That's the Hundred-Eyed Titan, Argus! How could it appear on this floor? A monster like that should only show up on floors beyond the 60th!"
Finn's extensive knowledge left no room for doubt. The creature's identity was unmistakable, and its presence here was a dire anomaly.
In mythology, the Hundred-Eyed Titan Argus was a legendary figure. According to the tales, Zeus had transformed his lover Io into a cow to protect her from Hera's wrath. However, Hera discovered the ruse and assigned Argus to watch over Io.
Argus met his end at the hands of Hermes, sent by Zeus to rescue Io. As a tribute, Zeus placed Argus's eyes on the tail of a peacock, creating the bird's iconic plumage.
A monster of Argus's caliber—one that transcended even the Minotaurs and other high-level dungeon creatures—was enough to strike fear into the hearts of any adventurer. Its unexpected appearance on this floor only deepened the group's growing sense of despair.
"System, what's going on here? Why is Argus here? I haven't even been to the 60th floor! This butterfly effect wasn't supposed to happen!"
Alexander's frustration was evident as he voiced his complaints.
Hearing his words, the system responded in its usual calm tone.
"Master, whether or not you've been to the 60th floor is irrelevant. The key issue is that you are a god. Are you not aware that gods are forbidden from entering this dungeon? Their presence causes mutations."
"God?! What god? I'm human! Since when did I become a god? Who decided this? Why wasn't I informed?"
Alexander felt thoroughly wronged. According to the system, Argus had appeared because of him. If he hadn't shown up, the plot would have followed its original course: the Loki Familia would have managed to scrape through a hard-fought victory. But now…
"Master, the dungeon doesn't care about your self-identification. You carry the divine essence of Goddess Artemis within you, which it perceives as godhood. And don't forget, monsters in this dungeon evolve by devouring divine power. To them, you're nothing short of a feast."
"Wait, what? That explains why Black Goliath was acting strange earlier. I thought it was Ottar pulling some strings. So…"
Alexander paused, piecing it together. "Hold on—does that mean I'm the reason for this dungeon mutation?"
"Yes," the system confirmed plainly.
"Then why didn't you warn me about this?"
"You never asked."
The system's response was maddeningly logical. For a moment, Alexander froze, utterly dumbfounded. This couldn't be real. He had come to aid the Loki Familia, but instead of helping, he had inadvertently turned their dungeon expedition into an even more dangerous endeavor.
Alexander glanced at the surrounding members of the Loki Familia, their faces etched with desperation. He couldn't help but offer an awkward smile.
Great. What should have been a challenging scenario was now upgraded to a nightmare—courtesy of him.
"Well," he thought wryly, "I've really done it this time."
