Chapter 28: Chapter 28: I Love Work, Work Makes Me Happy!
The evidence was overwhelming. Michael collapsed to the ground, his face drained of all color.
Three thieves had been caught in total.
Two were apprehended, and the third, Shan, had tried to escape but was quickly stopped. In an attempt to lessen his punishment, Shan produced the stolen goods from his person: two phones and a wallet.
However, Shan insisted that the wallet had been stolen while he was watching the commotion earlier. He claimed it contained only some identification cards and bank cards but not a single cent in cash.
At the same time, the crowd of bystanders who had initially fled the scene began trickling back. Seeing that Antonia wasn't pursuing them, they cautiously returned to witness the aftermath.
When the truth was revealed, they were stunned.
"So, all three of them were thieves?"
"The officers here are incredible! Hats off to them!"
"Wow, impressive!"
"The Chicago Police Department is top-notch. A big thumbs-up!"
"Wait, is that my wallet?"
"So, the wallet without cash is yours?"
"Um… well… maybe not…"
The crowd buzzed with chatter, and admiration for Antonia grew. The initial fear they felt upon seeing the police had been replaced with respect.
Some victims of the theft stared at their recovered belongings with mixed emotions—relief, anger, and frustration. However, with Antonia present, they refrained from any rash actions toward the thieves.
Meanwhile, Sam, Antonia's supervisor, had been rendered speechless by the unfolding events.
At first, he had chalked up Antonia catching the first thief to sheer luck.
Then Antonia apprehended the second thief among the crowd, and Sam began to consider it a coincidence.
But when Antonia unearthed the stolen items Michael had hidden, it became clear to Sam that this wasn't luck or chance. This was skill—raw, undeniable talent.
This kid was extraordinary!
Sam felt as though he had been struck by lightning.
Antonia's keen instincts and sharp eyes were unbelievable. No wonder he had already made such a name for himself after just two days on the force. The entire precinct had been abuzz about his accomplishments, but Sam hadn't fully believed the hype.
Now, witnessing Antonia in action, Sam had to admit: this rookie was the real deal.
Antonia's ability to sniff out criminals was almost supernatural.
Sam's initial plan had been simple. He thought the streets of their jurisdiction had been cleaned up enough over the past couple of days. So, today's outing was supposed to be about bonding—getting to know his new apprentice better and maybe reaping a little reflected glory in the process.
He never expected Antonia to pull off a miracle right in front of him.
This rookie was a goldmine!
A prize machine!
Sam couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement.
Antonia wasn't just a skilled officer—he was a prodigy. His physical presence alone was imposing, and his sharp instincts seemed almost otherworldly.
Little did Sam know, Antonia's success came with a secret.
Antonia's uncanny ability to locate stolen goods wasn't entirely natural. It was thanks to a system that granted him unique skills. While he couldn't reveal the existence of this system, Antonia had cleverly framed his talents as being related to a keen sense of smell.
It wasn't a perfect explanation, but it was believable enough to keep suspicions at bay.
With a grin, Antonia turned to Sam and asked, "So, Master, do you believe me now?"
Sam gave him a complicated look.
Believe him? Of course, he believed him!
How could he not? If he doubted Antonia now, what would it take—catching ten more thieves on the spot?
They didn't even have enough handcuffs for that!
Sam sighed and said, "Fine, fine, I believe you. But we're out of handcuffs. We need backup to handle these guys!"
Antonia shrugged and said confidently, "No need. Just march them back to the station like this. Ask them if they dare to run. In fact, I'll even let them have a ten-minute head start if they think they can escape."
At this, Shan and the other two thieves shook their heads vigorously.
Sam was at a loss for words.
This kid wasn't just skilled—he was a walking nightmare for criminals.
As Sam watched the scene unfold, a thought occurred to him.
His eyes lit up, and he turned to Antonia with a wide grin.
"Antonia," Sam said, his tone suddenly eager.
Antonia frowned, taking a cautious step back. "Master, what are you planning?"
But Sam wasn't listening. He was too caught up in his excitement.
He grabbed Antonia's hand, then dropped to his knees and hugged the rookie's leg.
"Master! What are you doing?!" Antonia exclaimed, flustered.
"Antonia, listen to me!" Sam said, his voice trembling with excitement. "If catching thieves is your calling, then I know the perfect place to take you. Trust me, you'll have the time of your life there!"
Antonia hesitated, but his curiosity was piqued.
Just then, the system awarded him points for catching the three thieves.
The new points pushed Antonia's Golden Bell skill to the intermediate level. With this upgrade, he felt stronger than ever. He was confident he could now withstand physical attacks, even from sharp weapons, without breaking a sweat.
Antonia grinned.
The system rewards made his work even more fulfilling. Catching thieves wasn't just a job—it was a way to grow stronger.
"I love my job," Antonia said, his eyes gleaming. "Work makes me happy!"
Turning to Sam, he said eagerly, "Alright, Master. Let's go! Lead the way. If there's a place full of thieves, I want to be there!"
Sam's grin widened as he pulled Antonia to his feet.
"Follow me, kid," Sam said. "You're about to see the wildest side of Chicago!"
