How to Train Your Vampire

17

I woke up, feeling Scarlet shifting around next to me on the bed. It was a strangely familiar feeling. The last time I had slept in the same bed with someone was when I was a little kid.

Taptaptaptaptaptaptap

I sat upright at the noise and looked at the window.

I could see a silhouette in the light there.

I looked at Scarlet who was currently fixated on my phone. A calendar notification popped up with a song and she swiped at the notification, watching it zoom away.

Shit.

I stood up and tossed one of my oversized hoodies at Scarlet to cover her pale skin. She struggled with it and looked at the article of clothing.

I blinked at her for the first time. Her skin was clean but the clothes I'd loaned to her before were now dirty. It looked like maybe she'd gotten into a fight with a sludge puddle.

But that was an issue for later on.

She slid into the sweatshirt and started to struggle as it covered her head.

I went over and she started to back away from me just to trip and clumsily fall to the floor.

"Come back here," I hissed and she stopped struggling so much. I pulled the head hole over her head and finally she was freed.

She took a deep breath, looking relieved. Her arms moved around inside the baggy hoodie and found the arm holes. I pulled the hood down over her head and adjusted it to be sure it would shade her.

Finally I went over to the tapping at the window and pulled the burgundy blanket down and drew up the shade.

Lee stood there. A deep frown was on her face.

I opened the window, letting in the first chilly breeze I'd felt so far.

"What the hell?" She snapped.

"I'm coming, let me get dressed," I was already trying to find an outfit and put it together.

I pulled out a band T-shirt and some jeans (both rich shades of black) and went back over to shut the shades.

"Who's that

?" Lee asked.

I didn't need to follow her gaze to know who she was talking about but I did. Scarlet had finally figured out the sweatshirt and had pulled the hood down securely over her face so not a drop of direct sunlight hit her face.

"Uh," I said. I didn't have a logical answer for her. "Scarlet," I said simply and dropped the shade between us.

Scarlet turned away from me as I changed so I guessed she had some understanding of social norms.

When I finished pulling up my pants, I threw up the shades again. Lee was staring, open mouthed at me.

"Since when do you have a girlfriend?" she asked.

"What?" I realized she meant Scarlet and flushed hotly. I glanced back at where the other girl was currently combing her fingers through her hair.

'Whatever," Lee dismissed. "You can bring her along too, more ears will be fine for this."

She drew away from my window.

I let out a long breath, leaning against the sill. My face had to be bright red. I felt too hot and a weird feeling was squirming around in the pit of my stomach.

Scarlet tilted her head at me.

"Let's go," I told her and offered a hand.

She hesitated to take it but did so. She was trusting me more and more.
