How to Love a Night Fury how to train your dragon

Chapter 5: Chapter 6

The next morning I was playing with butterflies in my dragon form to pass the time. The cove was so peaceful. I wasn't even bothered by the storm that hit the night before. Rain always seems to calm me since I was a hatchling. I am not sure why, but I am glad that it has never scared me before. A mighty Night Fury like myself would be super embarrassed if that was the case.

A few minutes passed by, then I froze in place when I heard someone coming. Thinking that it may be someone besides Hiccup, I hid on top of some boulders and waited for the intruder to reveal themself.

As the person came into view I relaxed. It was just Hiccup. He had a basket of fish and some materials with him. He looked around for me as he set the basket down.

"Kala? Where are you? I didn't mean to scare you."

I jumped down in front of him and crooned in greeting.

"There you are. I see you wanted to dragon it up today. I brought you some fish. Didn't know if the lake here would have enough for you." He said as he grabbed a fish from the basket and held it up to me.

I looked it over and sniffed at it. I purred happily and opened my mouth to take it, but before I did Hiccup tilted his head a bit.

"Huh. Toothless. I could've sworn you had…"

Just to mess with him, I quickly unsheathed my teeth and took the fish from his hands. He jerked his arms away quickly and held them close to his chest with a scared look on his face.

"Teeth..was that really necessary?"

I swallowed the fish and laughed. Hiccup rolled his eyes.

"Oh ha ha. Very funny."

I then got an idea and pushed him down with my snout, making him sit against a rock.

"Wha–hey!"

I sat back on my haunches and started to regurgitate half of the fish I just ate. Once it was up, I let it fall into his lap and I sat back tilting my head while purring.

"Ugh..seriously Kala?"

Hiccup picked up the fish and was about to toss it aside, but I nudged his hands whining.

"What? You want me to eat it? Really? It was just in your stomach!"

I huffed and nudged his hands again. Hiccup sighed and took a bite of the fish, but he wouldn't swallow it. I whined again and made a swallowing motion. He gave me an exasperated look then swallowed the piece and shuddered. He looked at me and smiled awkwardly.

"There. Happy now?"

I nodded and attempted to smile back, but I had never done it while a dragon before. Hiccup stifled a laugh and he tossed the rest of the fish at me. I easily caught it and swallowed it.

He stood and went over to the basket then started to take out the materials he brought with him.

"I figured I would get the measurements of your tailfin today and show you the materials I was thinking of building it out of." He looked over at me with all the materials in his arms. "That okay with you?"

I nodded purring and went over to him. I sat down and moved my tail in front of me with my right tailfin spread open. Hiccup smiled and set all the materials down and got to work with measuring.

"I know you can't talk as a dragon, but is it okay if I tell you about my day?"

I nodded and crooned in response as a way of saying yes. He smiled and nodded back.

"Great. Because there is a lot I wanna talk about. Training today was..well for lack of a better word..interesting. We went up against a Deadly Nadder. There was a maze set up in the ring and everything and we had to try and find the Nadder's blind spot and strike it." He sighed and shook his head. "I hated it, Kala. All I wanted to do was figure out why we know next to nothing about your species. The only thing the Dragon Manual has on you is advice about staying alive. No speed stats, size stats, there's not even a picture. The only advice it said was to never engage and pray to the gods to not be found. Crazy right?"

I nodded and nudged him, crooning a bit to reassure him. He laughed a bit.

"I know, I know. You're nothing like what we think. It was frustrating that there was no information, ya know? I wanna help you learn more about your kind, but guess that's not gonna happen any time soon. I was so tempted to grab my charcoal stick and draw in the manual, but I refrained myself. Don't want my dad to get pissed off at me." He got out his journal and wrote down the measurements. "But anyways, I asked my mentor Gobber if there was anything else on Night Furies, but lo and behold there was none. So I dropped it and focused on finding out a way to get the Nadder to like me. Wasn't successful though. It was hard to even get near it with the other teens running around. Not to mention it thought I would attack it because of the axe my dad made me use for training. Which is now just a stick and is of no use now." He sighed and put his journal away.

I transformed and smiled softly at him.

"It's alright if you were not able to get near the dragon this time. You just started training, didn't you?"

Hiccup nodded. "Yeah. Today was the second day."

"Then it makes sense why you were not able to start figuring out how to tame the dragons yet. Especially with the chaos that was going on in the ring. Nadders are difficult to handle. Their fire is super hot and can harm easily."

"Doesn't every dragon have their own dangerous trait?"

"Yes, but it just depends on how you approach them. If you come at them with a weapon, they will automatically think you wish to harm them."

Hiccup nodded in understanding.

"Yeah, that would explain why they instantly attack once they come out of the cages. Also how come you haven't? I always have my dagger with me."

I smiled. "I'm not just any dragon, now am I?"

Hiccup blushed slightly and smiled a bit. "No, I guess not."

We kept eye contact for a while, but then Hiccup looked away, clearing his throat.

"A-anyways. I was thinking of building the prosthetic out of leather and iron. Those are the lightest materials we have on hand and the leather would be super close in texture to your dragon skin." He explained as he showed me some scraps of the materials he listed.

"How will you make it function?"

Hiccup looked up at me.

"I..haven't thought that far ahead." He looked down in thought. "Maybe..by a foot pedal? I could make a saddle and help you function the prosthetic that way."

I blushed with wide eyes. "A s-saddle?"

"Yeah..that is unless you'd rather not have a passenger. I totally understand if you don't. We did just meet properly yesterday evening. I could figure out a way to have it react to your muscle movements, but that would take some time."

I shook my head and smiled as the blush on my face slowly subsided.

"No, I-I don't mind at all. I think it would be fun to have you function my tailfin. You could experience the thrill of flying."

Hiccup smiled brightly and nodded. He got out his journal and sat down as he started to sketch out ideas for a saddle. I giggled and went over to the basket to get some more fish to eat.

"So what else happened during training?" I asked as I sat beside him and ate one of the fish I picked out of the basket.

Hiccup didn't look up from his journal as he replied. "Near the end of it, Astrid somehow ended up getting on top of the walls and the Nadder chased her, knocking all the walls down in the process. I was lost in thought when she jumped down and we got tangled up together. Her axe got stuck in my shield and we struggled to get untangled. The twins thought it was hilarious and made fun of me. She stepped on my face just to get my shield off my arm since her axe wouldn't come loose. Then she hit the Nadder in the face and got pissed off at me and scolded me because I wasn't focused on harming the dragon like all the others." He rolled his eyes. "Honestly, that girl is so high strung and full of herself."

I giggled a bit and moved some of my hair out of my face. "I take it you and her have a mutual dislike for one another?"

Hiccup nodded and finished up his drawings.

"Yeah pretty much. I used to have a huge crush on her, but now I see who she really is and I do not like it. Snotlout can have her all to himself."

"Are there any other girls in your village that you have eyes for?"

"Nope. Astrid was the only one."

"What about outside of your village? You must have met others from other islands growing up, right?" I asked.

Hiccup nodded as he put his journal away.

"Of course I have, but I haven't ever gained a crush on any of them. I..um..have a crush on someone else.." He started to blush while avoiding looking at me while rubbing the back of his neck.

I tilted my head to the side while resting my half eaten fish in my lap.

"Oh? On who?"

"W-well..uh..o-on..um.." Hiccup clears his throat while looking at a bird flying over us.

"You don't have to tell me if you are uncomfortable Hiccup. I understand. It is your life."

Hiccup shakes his head and looks at me. "No, I wanna tell you. It's just..I don't know how you'll react.."

I set my fish on the ground and rested my hand on his shoulder.

"I promise you I will not hate you for whatever you are about to say Hiccup. Alright?"

He took a deep breath and nodded. "Alright. The person I have a crush on..i-is you.."

My eyes widened and I blushed deeply. "M-me?"

Hiccup nodded and looked away.

"Y-yeah..you."
