Chapter 14: chapter 14
The next morning Hiccup and I went for a flight around the island before he had to head back for training. It was my idea since I noticed how nervous he was about today. It worked. As we were flying I could feel him physically relax on my back.
Once we were back in the cove he gave me a quick kiss on the snout and ran off to get to training on time.
~~~HTLANF~~~
I hated that I had to leave Kala alone so quickly today, but I didn't want my dad to question me about being late to training either.
I was the first one to the Kill Ring this time and I was so early that I was able to help Gobber set up barriers for us trainees to hide behind during the training session.
Since it was the semi-finals everyone in the village was coming to watch. My nerves were going haywire at the thought of it.
'How will I be able to get through this with everyone watching?! Nothing I do is harmful! There's bound to be someone that sees that if I get close to the dragon! They'll know I've been lying! This isn't good!'
After Gobber and I finished setting up, the others finally showed up and Gobber had us all group together.
"Alright. So today is it. This is how we'll decide who gets to kill their first dragon. The one to knock out the Gronckle without getting out is the winner. Got it?" Gobber explained. We all nodded in understanding. "Good. Get ready. The whole village is gonna be watchin' ya."
And with that, all of us got ready and waited for everyone to arrive.
~~~HTLANF~~~
As the semi-finals went down it was more chaotic than usual. All of the others were so determined to win. It was a slow process.
The twins got out first, just like the first time we went against the Gronckle. Then it was Fishlegs. And then Snotlout.
I hid behind a barrier to collect myself and try to figure out how to keep from knocking out the poor thing. I did not want to be the winner. At. All.
Astrid quickly hid beside me and glared at me.
"Stay out of my way! I'm winning this thing." She stated angrily. I raised my arms in a giving-up way.
"Good. Please, by all means." I said, not wanting to argue with her. She deserves this honor more than I do. I didn't want to be a part of training to begin with.
After that it all went by so fast.
Astrid left and hid behind another barrier, I stayed where I was, but the next thing I knew the Gronckle was coming my way. Out of instinct I reached out and scratched under its chin, then it fell to the ground fast asleep just as Astrid was running at it with a war cry.
I stood there sheepishly and waved at her just a bit.
Astrid looked horrified then she became pissed off.
"NO! NO! SON OF A HALF-TROLL, RAT-EATING MUNGE BUCKET!" She screamed as she swung her axe about in anger. I winced and started to slowly back away to the entrance of the ring.
My dad stood to get everyone to quiet down.
"Wait! Wait!" He bellowed and it went silent immediately. I took this as my chance to leave.
"So, later." I said as I quickly turned to bolt out of the ring. But before I could, Gobber grabbed me.
"Not so fast!" He said as he pulled me back to where my dad and Elder Gothi could see me. He held me there for a bit and then pulled Astrid over and let go. I stayed in place as my anxiety kicked in and froze me in place.
"The elder has decided!" My dad announced.
Gobber gestured to Astrid to see if she was chosen, but Gothi shook her head. I instantly knew that I won and I was absolutely terrified. Gobber then gestured to me and she nodded with a smile. Everyone cheered and I deflated immediately.
Gobber shook me excitedly.
"You've done it! You've done it, Hiccup! You get to kill the dragon!" He said happily.
"Ha, ha! That's my boy!" My dad cheered.
"Heh..yeah. I can't wait. I am so…"
~~~HTLANF~~~
"...LEAVING!" I yelled as I entered the cove after finally being able to leave the Kill Ring, already knowing Kala was listening to me. "We're leaving! Let's pack up and leave this place behind for good. We're gonna take a permanent vacation."
I set down the basket I brought that held all of my belongings from my hut. I had no time to get things from the forge since I was in such a rush to get off the island. I looked around for Kala, then jumped when I heard something being sharpened behind me.
I turned around and yelped when I saw Astrid sitting on top of a boulder sharpening her axe.
"W-what are you doing here Astrid?!" I asked, completely terrified that she probably found Kala and knew why I came here.
Astrid tossed the rock she was using and hopped down from the boulder, axe in hand.
"I want to know what's going on. No one just gets as good as you did. Especially you. Start talking!" She spat as she pointed her axe at me. I backed up a bit. "Are you training with someone?"
"T-training with someone..?" I asked nervously.
'Does Kala giving me tips count as training?'
"It better not involve this!" Astrid said as she pulled at my flight harness. I started to sweat a bit from how nervous I was becoming.
"I-I know this looks r-really bad...b-but you see...I um...this is...uh…"
'Come on Hiccup, think! Come up with an excuse to throw her off!'
"You're right! You're right. I'm through with the lies. I've been..making outfits. Yeah. So, you got me. It's time everyone knew. Drag me back. Here we go." I said as I tried to make her drag me back to the village. It wasn't necessarily a lie. I have been making things for Kala. The furs merchant can attest to that.
Astrid glared at me and forced me to the ground by bending my arm behind my back. My shoulder popped way louder than I expected it to.
"OW! Why would you DO that?!" I asked, gritting my teeth in pain as she held me down.
"That's for the lies." She stated bluntly.
"But I'm not lying! I bought a ton of wolf pelts last week to make a cloak!"
Astrid's eyes widened a bit and her grip loosened a little.
"You did?"
"Yes! I decided to start learning how to sew so I could start making my own clothes." I said, partially lying. I've known how to sew fabrics together since I was eight years old. All of my clothing I made myself. I just made everything look a bit bigger than needed to make everyone think I bought them from a merchant.
Astrid let go of me long enough for me to get onto my back to sit up and rub my shoulder, but before I could she rested her boot on my chest and dropped her axe on my stomach. I groaned and held my stomach.
"Well that's for everything else." She said as she caught her axe.
Both of us froze as we heard growling, but I relaxed a bit when I recognized it as Kala. Kala came out of hiding in her dragon form and slowly approached us. I got up to go calm her, but then Astrid pushed me back down.
"Get down! RUN! RUN!" She yelled as she tried to get away from her.
I got up again and got in between them holding my arms up to Kala.
"NO! No. It's okay! It's okay...she's not gonna hurt you." I said, trying to calm Kala down. It worked for the most part. She purred and nuzzled me, but I could tell she was still upset with how stiff she did it. I smiled then looked back at Astrid as I scratched behind Kala's left earplate. "You just scared him."
I mentally shuddered.
'Calling Kala that feels super weird.'
" I scared him ?!" Astrid yelled as she got up off the ground. "Who is 'him'?"
I sighed and stopped scratching behind Kala's eatplate.
"Astrid, Toothless. Toothless, Astrid." I introduced while gesturing between the girls with both my hands.
Kala huffed while glaring at Astrid. That made her run out of the cove.
"Da, da-da! We're dead!" I said as I watched Astrid run off. Most likely to tell the village that I've been hiding a Night Fury this whole time.
Kala huffed again and started to walk off. I looked over at her.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Where do you think you're going?" I asked as I jogged after her.
~~~HTLANF~~~
After a bit of convincing, Hiccup was able to get me to go after Astrid. I was very reluctant at first since we would be leaving the island behind anyways, but he promised to go on a midnight flight with me if I went after her.
It took a bit to find her, but once we did Hiccup adjusted my tailfin and I dived down and snatched her up with my forepaws.
As we got higher she started screaming.
"AH! Oh, Great Odin's ghost! Oh this is it!"
I rolled my eyes and placed her on a branch of the tallest tree I could find, then landed on one just above it. She struggled to hold onto the branch, which made me smirk a bit.
'That's what you get for hurting my intended.'
"Hiccup, get me down from here!" Astrid ordered with some fear in her tone.
"Not until you let me explain what's going on and promise to not tell anyone." Hiccup said sternly. I purred a bit at that.
"I am not listening to ANYTHING you have to say!" She said stubbornly and I glared at her.
"Fine. Then I won't speak. Just let me show you Astrid." Hiccup replied as he held a hand out to her in a friendly way. Although I could tell he wasn't too happy about the situation.
Astrid swatted his hand away and climbed onto my back. I refrained from growling as she did. She then wrapped her arms around Hiccup's waist.
"Now, get me down." She ordered. That pissed me off.
Hiccup noticed and pet my head to calm me.
"Alright, Toothless. Down. Gently ."
I glared ahead of me as I slowly opened my wings.
'Like Hel I'll do it gently. This girl has gone too far.'
"See? Nothing to be afraid of." Hiccup told Astrid, not knowing what I was planning.
'Oh there most definitely is something to be afraid of.' I thought and then I blasted off of the tree making Astrid scream her lungs off. I could feel her slipping off, but then she got closer to Hiccup again.
"TOOTHLESS! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! BAD DRAGON!" Hiccup yelled, but I could tell that he wasn't really mad at me. He looked back at Astrid. "He's not usually like this."
I smirked and started to go nuts with maneuvers. It made Astrid scream even more.
"Toothless, what are you doing? We need her to like us !"
'Uh. No we don't. We're leaving anyway, aren't we?'
I started to twirl in the air and dive down to the ocean. Astrid kept screaming, which made me very happy.
"And now the spinning. Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile." Hiccup deadpanned. I could hear the joy in his voice though.
"Okay! I am sorry! I'm sorry! Just get me off this thing!" Astrid apologized.
I purred and stopped pulling crazy maneuvers. I flew gently over the water and looked back at Hiccup smiling. He smiled back and scratched my head. I purred happily and flew up above the clouds.
It had become dark higher in the sky and the Northern Lights danced above us as I flew. I looked back at Hiccup again purring lovingly and he smiled back with a love-struck look.
Astrid sighed happily and rested her head on Hiccup's shoulder, which I did not like in the slightest. It seemed that Hiccup didn't either as he shrugged her head off him. She gave him a confused look, but then shook her head. I looked forward again to keep myself from glaring at her.
"Alright, I admit it. This is pretty cool. It's... amazing . He's amazing."
I rolled my eyes. 'Just a second ago you were screaming your lungs off because of me.'
"So, what now? Hiccup, your final exam is tomorrow. You know you're gonna have to kill a…" She lowered her voice in an attempt to keep me from hearing her. "Kill a dragon."
Both Hiccup and I sighed. We both knew he would have to do that. That's why he wanted to leave so badly. That's why I wanted to leave so badly. We don't belong on an island full of dragon killers.
"Don't remind me. I never wanted to do Dragon Training in the first place. I was forced to do it. Hel, I was even going to leave when you caught me entering the cove. I don't belong here Astrid. I'm not a killer and neither is Toothless." Hiccup explained as he slowly started to scratch my head again, more to calm himself than to calm me.
"Are you hearing yourself? That's such a cowardly move!" Astrid exclaimed. I growled a bit at that.
Before Hiccup could answer though I started to fly a bit faster. I don't know why I did. It was like I had no control over my own body. Like I was in some type of trance.
"Toothless? What's wrong bud?" Hiccup asked, but I couldn't respond. I just growled to get him to be quiet.
The farther we got, the more foggy it became. There was a noise that took over my mind to the point that I couldn't even hear Hiccup and Astrid anymore.
I kept flying and didn't stop until we entered a deactivated volcano and I landed on a ledge. I shook my head as the noise died down. I looked around the place in confusion and looked down from the ledge.
We were in some type of dragon nest. We watched all sorts of dragons drop livestock and fish into the giant pit of lava that was in the center of the nest.
"It's satisfying to know that all of our food has been dumped down a hole." Hiccup said sarcastically as we watched. I nodded in agreement.
"They're not eating any of it.." Astrid said, confused.
We watched an old Gronckle slowly make its way to the lava pit and spit out a small fish. It looked satisfied with itself and tried to fly away to rest, but then there was a deep roar that came from the pit.
" What..is that ?" Astrid asked, very terrified.
What we saw next was absolutely terrifying.
A giant green dragon rose from the lava pit and ate the old Gronckle whole. I backed away as a realization hit me.
'That dragon is the Queen! She's why I'm missing my memories! We shouldn't be here!'
As the Queen began to sink back down into the lava, she stopped and sniffed the air. She then rose again and looked in our direction with a glare.
"Okay, bud, we gotta get out of here. Now!" Hiccup said as he adjusted my tailfin.
'Agreed!'
I took off as fast as I could. It was hard to get out because of how many dragons were trying to leave as the Queen tried to chomp at me. I was able to get out as a Zippleback got in her line of sight and got eaten instead of us.
~~~HTLANF~~~
After we bolted from the Nest, we went straight back to the cove.
'That was the most terrifying experience of my life!' I thought as Hiccup and Astrid got off my back once we were on solid ground.
"No, it totally makes sense." Astrid said as she realized how the Nest functioned. "It's like a giant beehive. They're the workers, and that's their queen. It controls them. Let's find your dad." She stated as she tried to pull Hiccup back to the village. He pulled away from her and stood by my side glaring at her.
"Absolutely not. If we tell my dad how we found the Nest he'll kill both of us and Toothless. We'll think of something else. Toothless and I can go against the queen of the Nest to stop the raids, then we'll never come back here." Hiccup declared as he started to take off my saddle and tailfin.
"Are you crazy?! Hiccup, we just discovered the Dragons' Nest! The thing we've been after since Vikings first sailed here. And you want to keep it a secret and go off to kill that giant dragon yourself? To protect your pet dragon? Are you serious?"
I glared at her and then looked at Hiccup. He was standing still with his fists clenched, very upset.
"HE'S NOT A PET!" He shouted glaring at the shine that the moon put on my scales.
Astrid flinched back a bit and I crooned worriedly. Hiccup looked at Astrid with a glare so strong, that if looks could kill, she'd be long gone.
"He's the first real friend I have had my entire life! He's the first living thing that has truly cared about my well being! He doesn't do it out of pity like the others! He actually cares! Unlike you and the rest of the village!"
"H-Hiccup I didn't mean to upset you. I didn't know." Astrid said sadly.
Hiccup scoffed and crossed his arms.
"Right. Just like you didn't know I've been treated poorly my whole life for being the runt and a screw up. Save the apologies. I don't need any of your pity. Got plenty of it from Gobber and Gothi as is." He bluntly stated. I could tell he was done trying to gain the village's approval.
Astrid sighed and nodded.
"Alright. So, what do you want to do about the whole Nest thing? Now that we know about it, we need to figure out something." She said hesitantly.
I nuzzled Hiccup's side to help calm him down and he sighed and scratched my head as he relaxed from my touch.
"Just..give me until tomorrow, alright? I'll figure something out.. I..won't leave until this is sorted out.."
Astrid nodded then whacked Hiccup on the head.
"Ow! What was that for?!" He asked as he rubbed where she hit him.
"That was for kidnapping me." She said, then she kissed his cheek and my eyes widened. "And that was for...everything else."
Hiccup rubbed his cheek in disgust and glared at Astrid. "Okay, that crossed a line. What made you think you could do that? I don't like you like that Astrid."
Astrid grew nervous. "W-well I thought–"
"Well you were wrong." Hiccup interrupted with crossed arms. "I was just being nice and showing you what it was like to ride a dragon. Nothing more, nothing less. It just so happened to be a beautiful night. That's all."
Astrid looked away as she rubbed her arm. "I-I'm sorry I…" She sighed. "I'm sorry..I misread the situation. I'll see you tomorrow."
And with that, she left the cove.
I glared at her as she left, then transformed into my human form.
"I can't believe her! Typical. Of course a girl like her would think the romantic aspect of the flight was for her. Gods. Girls I swear." I huffed out with crossed arms.
Hiccup laughed and wrapped his arms around my waist from behind as he rested his head on my shoulder.
"That's funny coming from a lady like yourself."
I purred and leaned into him.
"That's just it. I'm a lady, not a girl."
Both of us laughed and relaxed. I looked at him and smiled a bit.
"So I'm guessing that permanent vacation is on hold?"
He sighed and nodded.
"Yeah, it seems to be. After we sort this stuff out we can leave. I promise." He declared then kissed my cheek. I purred softly.
"As long as we can get away from here soon." I replied.
