Chapter 21: Strikes Back
The battlefield outside Lunareth roared with chaos, a brutal symphony of clashing steel, blazing magic, and the cries of warriors. The tide had shifted dramatically in favor of Sylvena's forces with the arrival of Kade's commanders, but the enemy was far from defeated. In the heart of the fray, Queen Sylvena stood resolute, her radiant staff blazing as she directed her soldiers.
'Hold the line!'
she commanded, her voice unwavering even as her forces battled desperately to maintain their positions.
'We can do this!'
a captain shouted back, raising his sword.
'For Lunareth and our queen!'
For a moment, it seemed as if they could push the enemy back entirely—until a piercing horn blast cut through the battlefield. The eerie sound chilled even the bravest hearts, and the soldiers paused, their eyes darting toward the enemy's rear lines.
From the enemy ranks emerged a fresh wave of fighters, their blackened armor gleaming under the flickering light of magical flames. These were no ordinary soldiers; their movements were sharp, disciplined, and their weapons pulsed with malevolent energy. They spread across the battlefield with unsettling precision, targeting Sylvena's key defensive positions.
But it was not the soldiers who drew the most attention. Leading this new assault were three powerful figures, their auras so intense that the very air seemed to ripple around them.
At the center was a man cloaked in crimson robes, his pale face marked with glowing arcane runes. His staff, tipped with a jagged black crystal, radiated an oppressive energy that made the hairs on Sylvena's neck stand on end.
To his right was a woman in sleek, raven-black armor, her face concealed behind a bird-shaped helm. Two curved blades rested at her hips, and her every movement exuded a deadly, predatory grace.
On his left loomed a hulking giant clad in jagged, spiked armor, wielding a massive hammer crackling with dark energy. The ground trembled beneath his heavy steps as he surveyed the battlefield, his lips curling into a feral grin.
Sylvena's breath caught in her throat as she watched the trio advance.
'Who are they?'
she asked aloud, her voice tinged with alarm.
'Their commanders,'
Aerith said grimly, stepping up beside her.
'And by the looks of it, they're here to end this.'
Thadric strode forward, his massive war axe resting on his shoulder as he locked eyes with the armored giant. A grin spread across his face, his booming laugh echoing across the battlefield.
'Finally,'
he said.
'A proper challenge.'
The giant snorted, hefting his hammer onto his shoulder.
'I'll crush you where you stand.'
The ground shook as the two titans charged at each other, their weapons colliding with an earth-shattering crash. The force of the blow sent shockwaves rippling through the battlefield, throwing nearby soldiers off their feet.
Thadric grinned as he pushed back against the hammer's crushing weight.
'You've got strength, I'll give you that,'
he said.
'But let's see if you've got endurance!'
The giant roared, swinging his hammer with terrifying speed. Thadric ducked under the blow, spinning to deliver a devastating strike to his opponent's side. The axe bit deep into the blackened armor, sparks flying as the giant staggered back.
'Not bad,'
the giant growled, his voice laced with pain.
'But you'll need more than that to bring me down.'
They clashed again, their blows creating craters in the ground. The battle between them became a brutal contest of power and precision, each strike more ferocious than the last.
On the battlefield's western flank, Selyna moved through the shadows, her green eyes fixed on the raven-helmed woman. The enemy commander danced through the chaos, her twin blades flashing as she cut down Sylvena's soldiers with unnerving efficiency.
'You like dancing?'
Selyna muttered under her breath, a sly grin forming on her lips.
'Let's see if you can keep up.'
She darted forward, her movements silent and swift. The raven-helmed woman turned just in time to parry Selyna's first strike, their blades colliding with a sharp clang.
'A shadow among shadows,'
the woman said, her tone amused.
'How quaint.'
'And you're not half as scary as you think,'
Selyna shot back, spinning away from the counterstrike.
The two engaged in a deadly duel, their blades flashing in the dim light. Selyna was fast, her daggers moving in a blur, but the raven-helmed woman matched her speed with a fluid grace that seemed almost inhuman.
'You're good,'
Selyna admitted, feinting to the left before delivering a sharp strike to her opponent's shoulder.
'But I'm better.'
The raven-helmed woman chuckled softly, unfazed by the hit.
'We'll see about that.'
Their battle raged on, a dance of steel and shadows that left a trail of fallen soldiers in its wake.
In the center of the battlefield, Rynor faced the crimson-robed mage. The air between them crackled with energy as the two mages prepared their spells.
'You dare challenge me, firebrand?'
the mage sneered, raising his staff.
'Your flames will be snuffed out before they even reach me.'
Rynor smirked, slamming his staff into the ground. A ring of fire erupted around him, consuming the shadowy tendrils the mage had unleashed.
'Snuff this,'
Rynor said, unleashing a massive wave of flames.
The two mages exchanged spell after spell, their magic colliding in midair with deafening explosions. Fire and shadow twisted together, lighting up the battlefield in bursts of blinding light and deep darkness.
The crimson mage snarled as he summoned a massive orb of black energy, hurling it toward Rynor. The fire mage raised his staff, a fiery barrier forming just in time to absorb the attack.
'Is that all you've got?'
Rynor taunted, sending a stream of flames directly at his opponent.
The crimson mage barely managed to deflect the attack, his expression shifting from confidence to frustration.
Amidst the chaos, Sylvena fought to hold her position. Her radiant staff glowed brightly as she unleashed beams of light to cut through the enemy ranks. Her soldiers rallied around her, their morale bolstered by her presence, but the enemy's elites continued to press forward.
'Protect the wounded!'
she shouted, raising a glowing barrier to shield a group of injured soldiers.
'Do not let them breach the line!'
One of the elites broke through, his enchanted blade aimed directly at Sylvena. She braced herself, raising her staff to block the strike, but before the blade could connect, a shadowy figure appeared behind the attacker.
Selyna.
'You're welcome,'
Selyna said, her voice laced with amusement as she dispatched the elite with a swift strike.
'Try not to get yourself killed, Your Majesty.'
Sylvena gave her a grateful nod, her staff blazing as she returned to the fight.
As the commanders' battles raged on, the enemy forces began to falter. The crimson-robed mage staggered under Rynor's relentless assault, his shadow magic burning away as flames engulfed him. The raven-helmed woman struggled against Selyna's unrelenting strikes, her movements losing their deadly precision. Even the armored giant found himself overwhelmed, his hammer shattering under the force of Thadric's final blow.
'You thought you could defeat us?'
Thadric said, his voice booming as he raised his axe.
'You thought wrong.'
The giant fell with a resounding crash, and the battlefield grew still.
