How I Became The Villain

Chapter 19: Flames of Lunareth

The air in Lunareth was thick with tension and smoke as the battle raged through the city's outskirts. The once-serene streets were now filled with the clash of steel, the roar of battle cries, and the ominous hum of dark magic. Sylvana's forces fought valiantly, their discipline and skill on full display, but the enemy's precision and strength made it clear that this was no ordinary attack.

Queen Sylvena stood at the front lines, her silver armor glowing faintly as she directed her forces with an air of calm determination. Her staff, a beacon of light amidst the chaos, pulsed with magical energy. By her side, General Aerith moved with a fluid grace, his twin swords cutting through the enemy ranks with lethal precision.

'Focus on the flanks!'

Sylvena commanded, her voice carrying over the din of battle.

'We need to prevent them from reaching the inner defenses!'

Aerith nodded, spinning his blades to deflect a series of arrows aimed at the queen.

'They're targeting you, my queen,'

he said grimly.

'Their strategy is clear — decapitate the leadership, and the rest will crumble.'

Sylvena's lips pressed into a thin line as she raised her staff, summoning a radiant barrier to shield a group of soldiers under heavy fire.

'Then we make sure they don't succeed,'

she said firmly.

The enemy's forces were relentless, a well-coordinated tide of destruction that pushed Lunareth's defenses to their limits. Among their ranks were elite warriors and mages, their weapons and spells designed specifically to counter the city's formidable magic. Leading them was a crimson-armored general, his massive blade crackling with dark energy as he carved a path through the battlefield.

'Lunareth's defenders are impressive,'

the general boomed, his voice carrying a mocking tone.

'But even the strongest walls crumble before a determined siege!'

He raised his sword, its dark aura flaring as he brought it down in a devastating arc. The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the ground, scattering Sylvena's soldiers and creating a breach in their formation.

Sylvena clenched her jaw, stepping forward to meet the general's gaze. She raised her staff high, unleashing a concentrated beam of light that struck him squarely in the chest. He staggered back, his armor glowing faintly from the impact, but he recovered quickly, his laughter echoing through the battlefield.

'Is that all, Queen Sylvena?'

he taunted.

'You'll need more than that to stop me.'

'Then you'll get more,'

Sylvena said, her voice steady.

'Aerith, on my signal.'

Meanwhile, in Zerynth, Kade was finding it increasingly difficult to maintain his composure. High Sage Verath's cryptic remarks were wearing on his nerves, each one laced with an underlying sense of foreboding.

'The balance of power is ever-changing,'

Verath said, his silver eyes gleaming.

'And alliances are only as strong as the forces that uphold them. Tell me, Lord Kaedus, how strong is your grip on Lunareth?'

Kade tensed, his mind racing.

"Lunareth? What is he playing at?"

He leaned forward, narrowing his eyes.

'Strong enough,'

he said, his voice firm.

'But I'm guessing you already know that.'

Verath's thin lips curled into a faint smile.

'Do I? Perhaps. Or perhaps I simply enjoy testing the resolve of those who claim to hold dominion.'

"Testing resolve? More like trying to freak me out."

Kade forced a smirk, leaning back in his chair.

'Keep testing, Verath. You might find my resolve is stronger than you think.'

As the battle continued to rage, Sylvena's forces found themselves pushed to the brink. The enemy's precision and power were overwhelming, and even with Sylvena's leadership, the defenders were struggling to hold their ground.

'We can't keep this up!'

one of the captains shouted, his shield splintering under a powerful blow.

'They're too strong!'

Amidst the chaos, Queen Sylvena couldn't help but notice the expressions of her soldiers. For every fierce fighter holding the line, there were those whose eyes betrayed growing fear. She stepped forward, her staff glowing brighter, and spoke with all the authority of a queen and a leader.

'You are Lunareth's defenders, the shield of this kingdom!'

she called, her voice carrying across the battlefield.

'If you falter, then what hope remains for those who cannot fight? Stand tall, not just for yourselves but for your families, your home. We do not break; we do not fall!'

Her words rippled through the ranks, sparking new resolve in her warriors. It wasn't enough to stop the enemy's relentless advance, but it bought them precious seconds, and in war, seconds could mean the difference between life and death.

'Hold the line!'

Aerith roared, cutting down another wave of attackers.

'We have to buy time for reinforcements!'

Sylvena stepped forward, her staff blazing with radiant energy.

'There are no reinforcements,'

she said, her voice grim.

'We're all Lunareth has. We stand, or we fall.'

Her words galvanized the soldiers, their morale bolstered by her unwavering resolve. They fought with renewed vigor, but even so, the odds were stacked against them.

Just as the enemy forces began to breach the inner defenses, a deafening roar echoed across the battlefield. The ground trembled, and the enemy soldiers turned to see a massive figure charging toward them.

It was Brug.

The towering ogre smashed into the enemy lines like a living battering ram, scattering soldiers like leaves in a storm. His massive fists crushed shields and sent armored warriors flying through the air.

'Brug is here!'

he bellowed, his laughter booming.

'Who wants to fight Brug?'

Sylvena blinked in shock as the ogre plowed through the enemy ranks.

'What in the—'

Brug turned, thumping his chest proudly.

'Queen Sylvena!'

he shouted.

'Kaedus sent Brug to help! Brug will smash the bad ones!'

Despite herself, Sylvena couldn't help but smile.

'Then smash away, Brug,'

she said.

The crimson-armored general stepped forward, his dark blade glowing ominously.

'So, the Dark Lord sends his lackeys to fight for him,'

he sneered.

'Let's see if this one is as strong as the stories claim.'

Brug grinned, flexing his massive arms.

'Strong? Brug is strongest!'

The two clashed, their blows sending shockwaves rippling through the battlefield. Soldiers on both sides paused to watch, the sheer force of their battle leaving craters in the ground.

As the tremors of battle shook Lunareth, Kade found himself growing more uneasy. Verath's calm demeanor and cryptic remarks only added to his discomfort.

'Tell me, Lord Kaedus,'

Verath said, his voice soft but pointed.

'How long do you think your alliances will hold, when tested by fire and steel?'

Kade frowned, his patience wearing thin.

'Long enough to handle whatever you're planning.'

Verath chuckled softly, his silver eyes gleaming.

'We shall see.'
