97. Puffy Face
“Sigh~”
Ling Ning sat quietly in the pavilion at the park, letting out a frustrated sigh. Despite already wearing a maid outfit and handing out flyers on the street, she still found herself affected by these curious onlookers. Maybe she was still too inexperienced. Not bothering about the makeup on her face, she rubbed her cheeks roughly with her hands.
Xia You watched Ling Ning with concern. She knew nothing about modeling, so she didn’t understand what had happened or what to say to help.
“Hey, Xia You, can I have a hug?” Ling Ning looked at Xia You, and without waiting for an answer, wrapped her arms around Xia You’s slim waist, burying her head in her chest.
“Eh!?”
Xia You was stunned by the sudden situation, her arms awkwardly hovering in the air, unsure of where to place them.
Carefully glancing around to see if anyone was watching, she noticed there weren’t many people nearby. Hesitantly, she wrapped her arms around Ling Ning’s waist and whispered softly, “Are… are you okay, Ling Ning?”
Ling Ning shook her head slightly, her face still buried in Xia You’s chest, and said nothing.
“Hoo…”
After who knows how long, Ling Ning took a deep breath, then pulled herself away from Xia You’s embrace, her usual confident expression returning.
“Alright, I’m fine now.” Ling Ning smiled slightly, as if nothing had just happened.
“Are… are you really okay? I mean… I…” Xia You was still worried about Ling Ning, but didn’t know what to say. She could only stare blankly at her.
“I’m really okay. We should hurry back now. We’ve been out here long enough, and Sister Miaomiao must be getting anxious. She mentioned there’s quite a lot of work today. If we don’t hurry, we might not finish everything~” Ling Ning said as she took Xia You’s hand, leading her back to the photoshoot location.

“Sister Miaomiao, we’re back.”
“Hmm? I was just about to come find you. So, how are you feeling? If you’re still not ready, we have some time to let you adjust. Maybe we could move to a quieter spot to shoot some other photos first,” He Miaomiao said, looking at Ling Ning.
Ling Ning shook her head and said a bit apologetically, “I’m fine now, but my makeup might need some touch-ups. I kind of messed it up just now.”
“No problem, it’s a small matter,” Xiao Liu waved her hand dismissively, implying that reapplying makeup wasn’t an issue. Ling Ning’s skin was so good that even redoing the whole look wouldn’t take long, let alone just a touch-up.
Before long, Ling Ning’s makeup was fixed, and Uncle Zhao had also finished setting up the equipment.
Noticing the activity in their group, the crowd of onlookers that had not yet dispersed began to gather around again. The team felt helpless; after all, the park was a public space—they couldn’t stop others from entering.
“Ling Ning, are you sure you’re okay now?” He Miaomiao asked again to confirm.
Ling Ning nodded firmly. They were just onlookers, after all—mere paper tigers standing in her way to make money. She just had to treat them as nothing more than carrots, like when she was handing out flyers.
“Alright, let’s resume the shoot!”
He Miaomiao looked at Ling Ning, frowning slightly. Though she had improved a bit, there was still a gap between her current performance and the standards He Miaomiao expected.
Ling Ning tried her best to ignore the crowd, imagining them as carrots or any other harmless object. But, for some reason, she couldn’t calm herself. She knew she was being too eager—when you push too hard, things just don’t go well.
“Let’s take a break for now.” He Miaomiao thought to herself that perhaps she was being too impatient. After all, Ling Ning had only been modeling for less than three months; she was still new to this world.
“Sister Miaomiao, this might be a selfish request, but can I try again, just once more?” Ling Ning looked at He Miaomiao with determination. She didn’t want to give up just yet.
He Miaomiao looked deeply at Ling Ning for a moment, then turned to address the team. “Everyone, take a break. We’ll continue in a little while.”
“Thank you all so much,” Ling Ning said, bowing deeply to everyone.
Uncle Zhao scratched his head, a little embarrassed. “No need to thank us. We’re just doing our job. Young lady, you should try to adjust your state of mind. I can see you’re a bit too anxious right now, and the more you push yourself, the harder it will be.”
Uncle Zhao—full name Zhao Dashu—had worked at the magazine for over ten years and was one of the first employees. He had a lot of experience, and he had seen situations like this countless times. He could see Ling Ning’s anxious state at a glance.
Ling Ning gratefully accepted Uncle Zhao’s advice. She knew her rhythm had been thrown off by the onlookers, and she had become too flustered.
“Ling Ning, your phone.”
At that moment, Xia You came running over, handing Ling Ning her phone. The caller ID showed it was Ye Ye.
As soon as Ling Ning answered, Ye Ye’s adorable voice came through, “Mom, what are you doing right now? Why did it take so long to answer the phone?”
“Mo… um, Sister is at work right now~” Hearing her daughter’s voice, a gentle smile spread across Ling Ning’s lips.
“Oh~ Ye Ye is at Auntie Qin Qing’s house right now… Ah! Auntie Qin Qing, no! I mean Sister Qin Qing—Ye Ye got it wrong, please don’t pinch my cheeks~”
Ling Ning didn’t quite know how to respond to the unexpected situation. Qin Qing always insisted that Ling Ye call her “sister,” but Ling Ye often forgot, leading to the frequent consequence of Qin Qing pinching her cheeks as a reminder. It didn’t seem very effective, though.
“Anyway, come over after you finish work tonight. I need your help with something. That’s all… hey! You little rascal, don’t run! I swear, if I catch you, I’ll pinch your cheeks till they’re swollen!”
Ling Ning quietly hung up. It seemed like the two of them were having a lot of fun. But Qin Qing had mentioned needing her help with something—Ling Ning wondered what it could be. Couldn’t she have explained it over the phone?
After the call, Ling Ning suddenly found her previously anxious heart calming down.
“Ready?”
“Yes… No! I’m certain I’m ready now!” Ling Ning said firmly. Since Sister Miaomiao had agreed to her request, she couldn’t afford to let her down. She had to produce some results now, no matter what!

Author’s Note:
Got stuck writing today—proper writer’s block, barely 500 words in two hours. From ten in the morning till three in the afternoon just to get one chapter done. Unbelievable~
