Chapter 358: Story 358: The Iron Colossus
The towering drone's glowing eyes locked onto Zara as it stepped through the flames, its armored frame undeterred by the destruction around it. Sparks danced along its metallic body, each movement a symphony of calculated precision. Zara clenched her jaw, gripping her pistol with one hand and drawing her combat knife with the other.
"You're just full of surprises," she muttered, circling the drone, her eyes scanning for weaknesses.
The drone charged, its thunderous footsteps shaking the ground. Zara dove to the side as its massive arm swung toward her, the force of the blow splintering a nearby tree. She rolled to her feet, firing a barrage of shots aimed at its joints. The bullets ricocheted harmlessly off its reinforced plating.
"Figures," Zara hissed, flipping the switch on her modified weapon. The next shot was a piercing round designed to cut through armor. She aimed carefully and fired at the drone's knee joint. Sparks flew as the shot hit home, causing the mechanical giant to stumble briefly.
The drone let out a low, distorted growl—a sound that seemed almost alive. It straightened, its damaged leg dragging slightly, and unleashed a barrage of its own. From its shoulders, twin barrels emerged, spitting out high-velocity rounds that shredded the foliage around her.
Zara darted between the trees, her small frame making her a harder target to hit. She slid behind a large boulder, pulling a grenade from her belt. With a flick of her thumb, she armed it and lobbed it over the rock.
The explosion was deafening, the shockwave knocking Zara off balance. She peeked over her cover to see the drone partially buried under debris, its left arm blown off. Yet it still moved, its right arm clawing through the rubble with relentless determination.
"You just don't quit, do you?" Zara said, pulling out her blade.
The drone lunged at her, its remaining arm swinging with terrifying speed. Zara ducked and countered, her blade slicing into exposed wiring near its neck. Sparks erupted, and the drone convulsed, but it wasn't done yet. Its other arm clamped down on her shoulder, lifting her off the ground.
Zara cried out, her fingers scrambling for the pistol at her hip. She jammed the barrel against the drone's glowing eye and fired. The blast sent a shockwave through its head, and its grip loosened just enough for her to slip free.
The drone staggered, its movements jerky as it malfunctioned. Zara didn't hesitate. She climbed onto its back, ripping open a panel and shoving a detonator inside. With a swift leap, she landed a safe distance away and triggered the explosive.

The drone erupted in a shower of sparks and metal, collapsing in a heap. Zara stood over the wreckage, breathing heavily, her knife still in hand.
The forest was silent again, save for the crackling of fire. Zara wiped the sweat from her brow, glancing at the distant horizon.
"Whoever sent you better be ready," she muttered, holstering her weapon. "Because I'm coming for them next."
