Horizon before dawn

Chapter 31: The battle

The battle for Hollow Fort had barely begun, but it was already clear this would be no easy victory. Orlok's squad distraction at the western gate had drawn most of the bandits out, but we hadn't anticipated the chaos that was about to unfold on us.

Albedo moved ahead of us, quick and silent as always her agility and speed were unmatched, and she was already scouting the perimeter making sure there were no stragglers to alert the others. I followed closely, Orlok's shouts still echoing from the distance, ensuring we had the element of surprise. But just as I signaled for the group to advance, a loud, screeching roar echoed from the far side of the fort.

I turned just in time to see a Spitfire.

But it was too late. The Spitfire unleashed a wave of fire bullets in our direction, its fiery jets crashing down on us. The first wave hit like a storm, and I barely had time to dive to the side, my body slamming into the ground as the heat seared past me.

Cam and Rhea were close behind me, but the flames reached them too quickly. Rhea darted to safety, but Cam was too slow. He roared in pain as the explosive flames scorched his back, knocking him to the ground. The massive warrior struggled to get to his feet, his body smoking and singed.

"Cam!" I shouted, scrambling to his side. The bandits had learned to use the old ones machine's firepower to their advantage, and now they were turning it on us with deadly precision. It fired again, sending another wave of bullets over us. I barely managed to roll out of the way, but two of the squad members weren't so lucky. One of them screamed in pain, falling to the ground.

I drew my bow, my hands steady despite the chaos. "Albedo!" I shouted, my voice cutting through the din of battle. "Grenades NOW!"

The bandits, taking cover from my arrows, had no idea what was coming. Their attention was divided, trying to track me, unaware of the deadly weapon that Albedo had in her arsenal.

She tossed the first grenade with practiced ease, and I saw it arc through the air, a small, deadly streak of metal.

The explosion was immediate and deafening. BOOM! The tower shook violently as the blast tore through the damage and old structure, sending debris crashing down. The bandits who had been huddled for cover were caught in the blast. I saw one of them get swept away by the shockwave, his body sent tumbling like a ragdoll.

The tower itself began to collapse, groaning under the force of the explosion. Stone and timber rained down, and I watched in grim satisfaction as the structure buckled and crumbled, taking down half of the bandits with it. Those who had survived the blast were dazed, their senses shattered by the sheer force of the explosion.

"Keep pushing!" I barked to the squad, my voice cutting through the smoke and rubble. "No one stops until we've cleared this place!"

Cam, his body battered but unyielding, roared a battle cry as he charged forward, swinging his spear with deadly force.

Rhea, was already flanking the remaining enemies, moving with such speed that they didn't even know she was there until it was too late.

The bandits, now scrambling to regroup, were falling apart. They were outnumbered, outclassed, and now, they were caught in a perfect storm of precision, firepower, and strategy.

I kept firing, each arrow finding its mark, while Albedo and the others pressed the attack. The collapse of the tower had given us a massive advantage, but the real victory would come when the last of the bandits lay defeated. This fort, this place, it would be ours and we would defend it with everything we had.

"Albedo, keep up the pressure!" I called out as I fired another shot. "We end this now!"

One of the bandits, wielding a flamethrower like contraption that spewed searing jets of fire, emerged from the shadows. His first blast narrowly missing me them the bandit turned his weapon toward Albedo, who was directing another group, and unleashed another wave of fire.

"Albedo, look out!" I shouted, loosing an arrow that struck the bandit's shoulder. The impact staggered him, but he didn't go down.

Albedo reacted instantly, diving behind a pile of rubble just as the flames roared past her. She came up quickly, a second grenade in her hand.

"This one's for you!" she snarled, throwing it with all her strength.

The grenade struck the bandit's weapon, and the resulting explosion sent a fiery shockwave through the courtyard. The bandit was thrown backward, his weapon shattered, and he lay still amid the wreckage.

Seizing the moment i leapt from cover finishing off the remaining bandits near the gate. My movements were fluid and deadly thanks to my skills

.

After a few more grueling minutes of combat, the chaos of battle finally subsided. The last of the bandits fell, their resistance crumbling under the relentless onslaught of our combined forces. The courtyard, once alive with the clash of steel and the shouts of combat, grew eerily quiet. Smoke hung heavy in the air, mingling with the scent of blood and scorched wood. The only sounds now were the heavy breathing of my warriors and the distant crackle of smoldering fires.

Orlok's squad emerged from the western gate, bloodied and injured but victorious. Their weapons were stained, their armor battered, but their spirits unbroken.

I took a moment to scan the fort, ensuring there were no signs of movement. No more bandits hiding in the shadows, no threats lurking in the rubble. The fort was ours. We had fought for it, bled for it, some died for it and now, we stood victorious.

A surge of pride and adrenaline coursed through me as I raised my bow high into the air, my voice ringing out with unrestrained triumph.

"THE DAY IS OURS!" I roared, the sound echoing off the stone walls of the fort.

"YEAHHH!" came the thunderous response, as every man and woman raised their weapons in unison, spears, bows, and blades lifted high. Their shouts were a symphony of defiance, their cries a testament to our strength and unity. The sound filled the air, a declaration that this place, this Hollow Fort, now belonged to us.

Cam strode over, his steps heavy but confident. He slapped a hand on my shoulder, his grip firm despite the burns and cuts that covered him.

"We did it." he said, his voice gruff but filled with pride. "This place is ours now."

I nodded, my own exhaustion momentarily forgotten in the rush of victory.

"We've earned it," I said, looking out over the fort. "Every inch of it. But this is just the beginning. We'll fortify it, make it stronger, and carve out a place where we can truly be free and build something new in this wolrd."

The cheers of the squad filled the air once more, their voices carrying far beyond the walls of the fort. This was more than just a victory, it was a statement to the world. Against all odds, we had claimed Hollow Fort.

This fort was more than old stone and timber, it was a symbol of our resilience, a promise of a future where we could stand tall, no longer running, no longer afraid of the next day. Hollow Fort was our home now, and we would make it a stronghold no enemy could ever take from us.

'My first settlement needs a new name.' I thought to myself already knowing what to call it.
