Chapter 60: Kiana: I'll Fight Ten!
After thinking for a long while, Otto listed several possibilities for Shu's source of information, but these possibilities were temporarily stored in his mind.
He could see that Shu was deliberately hiding his source of information. Even if he asked, Shu would probably just try to brush it off, or more likely, he'd make up a small lie to avoid the question.
It wasn't impossible to forcefully pry Shu's mouth open, but Otto thought that giving Shu enough respect was better.
After all, he would find out sooner or later. Shu wasn't the type of person who could hide something for long. Moreover, his impression of Kiana and the others was quite good.
Hmm… except for me.
Did I do something unforgivable in their intelligence?
Otto couldn't help but remember the day he first met Shu, and the repressed outburst in his voice. It sounded as if a mouse, upon seeing a cat, had let out a sharp, explosive squeak.
It seems like I still have to let Theresa and the others slowly coax that information out of him.
"By the way, how fast are those Honkai beasts exactly?" Otto gave up on the idea of reviewing all of the torture techniques he had studied, and asked with a smile.
Shu recalled the sound of the sonic boom that he had "once" heard when the advancing Honkai beasts were flying, and said two words blankly: "Supersonic speed."
Otto: "Hmm... Supersonic speed, huh... Hmm?"
"Screech-" Otto slammed the brakes, and the entire car was sent skidding far forward with the enormous inertia. It left several dark scratch marks on the ground.
Just like when Kiana saw him.
Shu, the only one who was standing, was launched into the air due to the sudden stop, looking bewildered. He crashed heavily into the rear of the driver's cabin with a loud "thud," sounding extremely loud.
"Otto!!" Could Shu's explosive temper handle this?! He immediately crawled behind the driver's seat and, from the small window, glared at Otto, pointing at him accusingly.
Otto silently turned around, staring at Shu with his deep eyes. Those emerald green eyes seemed to be sucking Shu's entire being in.
Shu also silently put his hand down and stopped baring his teeth.
Damn, this guy is the one I can't afford to offend.
"Grandpa!" Unlike Shu, Theresa had never been afraid of Otto. In the midst of Shu's encouraging gaze, Theresa stood up with a fierce aura, walked to the back of the driver's seat, raised her hand, and knocked on the driver's cabin. "Why did you suddenly stop without any warning! Aren't we supposed to be heading to that military base as quickly as possible?"
Theresa! You're my real-life mouthpiece!!!
Shu immediately moved behind Theresa, and, along with Theresa, glared at Otto and silently questioned him.
Do you know how much time you've wasted by stopping like that?!
"Shu, are you sure that everything you said is accurate, without any misdescriptions or omissions?" But this time, Otto didn't look at Theresa. Instead, he stared straight at Shu, unmasked.
The feeling of being stared at by a smiling tiger suddenly turned cold caused Shu to shudder. He could only nod quickly, afraid that Otto would say things like "You're no longer of use, let's dispose of him," something along the lines of "start and discard."
Otto's expression became unpleasant for the first time. Although Shu could only see Otto's slender eyebrows furrow slightly, Otto usually had an elegant and smiley appearance. Shu felt that this was a breakthrough.
"Shu, how much do you know about Honkai beasts?" Otto asked after a moment of contemplation. "I'm referring to... the basic operating logic of those Honkai beasts."
"Basic operating logic?" Shu's eyebrows also furrowed, even deeper than Otto's. "The basic operating logic of Honkai beasts should only be one thing, to destroy humanity… or perhaps other life?"
"Then you must have considered this question." Otto continued along with Shu's point, "A group of small, supersonic Honkai beasts... how big would their tracking range be?"
Shu was stunned. How big would the tracking range of advancing-class Honkai beasts be? He really didn't know.
Looking at the confused expression on Shu's face, Otto said indifferently, "The detection range of modern fighter jets is never determined by your eyes or mine. They have radar and a total view provided by a command center. Only slower aircraft use their eyes for detection.
"So, please think again. Can those 'rampaging' Honkai beasts in the city find us hiding in the military base? Or do you think that with just us, plus a few others who might have managed to escape to the military base, we can use the weapons in the military base to resist those Honkai beasts' attacks?"
Shu's expression suddenly changed drastically. At that moment, he remembered that lingering armored-class Honkai beast again.
If an armored-class Honkai beast could find him time and time again, then what about those advancing-class Honkai beasts, which were known for their speed and pursuit?
At this moment, Shu suddenly understood why those advancing-class Honkai beasts in the city were now attacking in full force, and he also understood why they were going straight for the military base.
Destroying the bridge was just something they did on the side. They weren't afraid of death. It was just that the bridge happened to appear in front of them.
Shu could imagine that if they really followed his plan, they might have been able to rush into the military base before the advancing-class Honkai beasts appeared, but they would likely have to face those supersonic Honkai beasts before they even got their weapons ready.
Recalling the overwhelming number of Honkai beasts, and then thinking about the tragic fate of the Nagazora Bridge, Shu suddenly felt a sharp pain in his lower back, as if he had personally experienced the pain of being sliced in half by an advancing-class Honkai beast's wing.
Shu no longer had a good expression. He held his head in his hands and crouched down. Otto also sat there without saying a word, contemplating something.
"Mei, what's going on? Why did we suddenly stop?" Kiana, who had been too focused on where she and Mei were touching, hadn't been paying attention to the lesson. Looking at the serious scene, she looked as bewildered as a student who had bent down to pick up an eraser during math class.
Mei, on the other hand, had been listening intently from the moment Otto opened his mouth, so she hadn't been paying attention to Kiana's fidgeting.
"We might attract a lot of enemies to the military base..." Mei summarized, and then skillfully explained the summarized knowledge to Kiana.
Kiana understood this time and immediately stood up. "Are there a lot of zombies?!"
Then she would need a lot of weapons to fend off those zombies!
"No, they're Honkai beasts." Mei added, and then, after thinking about it, added, "A lot of Honkai beasts."
Kiana immediately slumped down.
I'm tired, let's just destroy it all.
