Chapter 16: We’re Leaving!
"Isn't the current ending already very good? Why would we need to reverse it?"
Lin Wei felt that He Kun was acting strangely. What was with this debate-like situation?
Although he felt like there was a lot to complain about, Lin Wei still answered seriously. Again, because the other side was asking seriously, he should give an equal response. Lin Wei thought that that was only polite.
Then, he thought about it and offered his explanation.
"I had thought about it, because this story is too painful, but then I didn't want to. Because this pain was actually worth experiencing."
"Let me tell you my story. When I was little, my parents often fought. My father liked to drink, and every time he finished drinking, he would beat my mother, often in front of me."
"Then, when I was eight, one afternoon, my mother asked me to go to the kitchen and get her a knife. After a while, she gave me some money and told me that she wasn't feeling well, and asked me to go to the pharmacy and buy her some medicine."
"Then, my mother died. Later, when I grew up, I realized that it was sleeping pills. She had actually killed herself because of me. Later, I thought, if I had been a little bit more rebellious back then, and hadn't been so obedient, that would have been better."
"When I was nine, my father was stabbed eight times by my maternal grandparents and two uncles. He was covered in blood that wouldn't stop flowing, and it was all over the floor. I watched him get pushed into the operating room, and I also saw him get turned away at the hospital doors because the doctor had checked him and said there was no way to save him. But they still saved him."
"I am very grateful to that doctor. Because of his all-out effort to save him, I didn't have to become an orphan, and at least I still had a relative in this world. Even if that relative was my terrible, useless father."
"I am also very grateful to my father. He gave me someone to rely on in this world. I didn't have to become a vagrant or die of starvation in some unknown corner. Even if life afterwards was not happy, even if I was beaten at home and bullied at school, I could endure it. Because at least I was still alive, wasn't I?"
"As long as you're alive, it's enough. If you're alive, you have a future. If you're alive, you have hope."
"But I also often thought, wouldn't it be great if someone could come and save me and get me out of all of this?"
"But unfortunately, no one did. So I kept holding on, and there was even a time when I felt like I was going crazy."
"It's also good that I didn't."
"When I had finally survived, and had the courage to look back on my past, I realized that my redemption had already been completed."
"I don't want to go back to the past. Those experiences were too painful. I also don't want to deny the past, because it is an indispensable part of me."
"So later I often wondered, if someone had really come and saved me from that suffering, then what would have happened to me after that? Maybe I would be better now, or maybe I would get used to relying on others and become useless in the end. All of that is unpredictable."
"But at the very least, I am satisfied with the current me, so I don't want to deny the past."
Lin Wei stopped recalling the past, and continued to frankly explain to He Kun,
"Experiences determine character, and character determines destiny." Lin Wei pointed to the box that was now full of figurines and merchandise. "Since the current ending is not bad, then why should I rashly intervene?"
"Changing their life trajectories would naturally bring countless possibilities. It might be better, or it might be worse. But how can you be sure that you will bring them a better result?"
"Just by relying on some ethereal cheat? Come on…"
Another lengthy speech.
Wait a minute, why did I say again? Lin Wei felt strange.
He Kun listened seriously, without making a comment. After a while, he opened his mouth again.
"Since you've already transmigrated into it, and you've foreseen the future, then I'd like to ask you another question."
He Kun put his face right up to his, and his tone was imposing.
"Can a future that has already been foreseen still be the future?"
Huh?
Lin Wei felt confused. It was just a game. Why was he taking it so seriously?
Then, he suddenly felt a panic in his heart, another inexplicable feeling.
It was just a game, why was he panicking?
What, had he failed a debate?
(╯‵□′)╯︵┻━┻
This was not a debate at all!
"Hmph, boring."
He Kun waved his hand, as if he was chasing away flies.
"Alright, let's go. Otherwise the train might be late."
Lin Wei scratched his head, feeling a little confused. Why had he suddenly gotten upset?
Tsk, whatever. He wouldn't serve him. Goodbye to you.
He picked up the box that was full of figurines and merchandise. Lin Wei was about to leave.
Suddenly, a faint light flashed. Lin Wei looked down and saw that it was the model of the Feather of the Azure that had reflected the sunlight.
He couldn't help but reach out and touch it. As soon as he touched it, another light flashed, and the Feather of the Azure model turned into a feather that gently floated into the air.
Lin Wei suddenly understood.
He thud… No, he couldn't bear to do that.
He gently placed the cardboard box in his hand on the ground, and turned around to shout
"He Kun!"
"What is it, great Wei?"
He Kun was confused. It was as if he had been startled by Lin Wei, so he couldn't help but complain,
"Can you stop scaring people like that?"
That was the familiar way that his roommate acted.
Lin Wei smiled gently. "I feel like it!"
He strode back to the table, pulled out a stool, and sat down with a confident posture.
"Order takeout! I'm hungry. I'll leave once I'm full."
"You're paying. Daddy is going to rip you off today."
Since this shop wouldn't be around after this visit, he had to take advantage of this opportunity. Lin Wei was incredibly reckless.
He Kun cursed and took out his phone, then continued to curse.
"You're my dog son, you better be grateful that your dad loves you, otherwise, you would've gotten a slap on your face long ago!"
Lin Wei recklessly returned a middle finger at him, shouting that he was his father.
Less than a minute later, there was a knock at the door.
Lin Wei sighed. All of his recklessness had turned into bubbles and disappeared. Even if he was trying hard to accommodate others, he could never go back to the past.
It was really a dream. Normal deliveries wouldn't be this fast.
He opened the door and accepted it, said a word of thanks, and then softly closed the door.
"Kun-ge, I'm about to leave. Why don't you eat one last meal with me?"
He Kun was confused. He pulled a stool over and sat opposite him, breaking his chopsticks and starting to eat.
Could food in a dream have flavor?
Lin Wei had never thought about it before, but he didn't need to think about it now.
He swallowed a mouthful of shredded potatoes, but didn't raise his head. He just kept stuffing a piece of steamed bun into his mouth, and asked He Kun with his voice a bit muffled,
"Kun-ge, what do you think about the takeout today?"
"It's weird. Did the seller change cooks or something? It's so sour. They must be giving out vinegar for free. I won't buy from them again. Should I not let you eat it either, great Wei? It's a holiday, you shouldn't have to put up with this garbage. I'll order from another place instead."
"It's fine, I think it's pretty good..." Lin Wei still didn't raise his head, and he just kept stuffing another piece of steamed bun into his mouth. It still had that sour taste that made people want to cry.
Even if they changed places, it would still taste the same.
"Ha, this is truly terrible! They're crazy. I hope they go out of business soon!"
When he had eaten about half of it, Lin Wei could no longer hold back. He raised his head and laughed loudly and cursed. He laughed unrestrainedly, so much so that he accidentally inhaled a piece of bun, and he started choking until tears streamed down his face.
And then, it became quiet again. Lin Wei continued to eat the unpalatable food in silence. He didn't want to make any more sounds. This quiet atmosphere always brought him a healing sense of peace. So He Kun cooperated and didn't say anything more either.
"I'm leaving!"
Lin Wei wiped his mouth and said goodbye loudly. He didn't know if he was saying goodbye to his roommate, or to his former self.
He walked up to the cardboard box that was sitting quietly on the side, squatted down, and took out a model of a pink, fox-eared girl. Then, he lightly picked up a feather that was faintly glowing.
Only these two things were real, and they were his tickets to the next destination.
"The rest is all yours!"
"Tsk, what's with you and all this weird junk?"
He Kun glanced at it with some disdain.
"Ha, who knows? Maybe I was born for this in this lifetime?"
Lin Wei was full of self-mockery.
He couldn't delay any longer. Lin Wei looked back longingly for one last look at the familiar dorm, and waved his arm high in farewell.
The section that he had just read from the book popped into his mind again.
—When war is far away and becomes a legend of glory and romance, a story in books and a painting in museums, no longer a part of people's lives, they will cheer for the soldiers in the books, in the movies, and in their imaginations as they boarded the trains, rushing one after another towards victory and glory. And they would imagine themselves, like them, as symbols of heroes and glory.
But only those who had personally boarded this train would understand that they wanted to leave this place at all times. They wanted to return to their previous lives at all times, but there was no way to turn back.
There was no way to go back, and it was useless to think about it.
Lin Wei sighed and strode away.
When he took a step forward, the scenery suddenly changed.
The door was gone. When he looked back, the dorm was also gone.
Although he had expected this, Lin Wei still couldn't help but feel a little lost. That had been his most familiar place, a world that wasn't all that beautiful, and was even a little terrible,
But there was no Honkai energy there. It was a normal world where everyone could live a normal life.
"What a dream that I didn't want to wake up from."
Lin Wei couldn't help but sigh. Humans were lazy. In a familiar environment that could give them a sense of security, it was always easy to become addicted to it, even if it was just a fake sense of security.
He gently touched the feather and smiled faintly.
"I still have to thank you, Fu Hua."
Lin Wei said to himself. He knew that the other side would be able to hear him.
If it wasn't for that feather, he wouldn't have been able to wake up from his dream of depravity so easily.
No matter how beautiful the dream was, it wasn't real in the end.
The feather flashed, and then disappeared.
Lin Wei wasn't regretful. It had already served its purpose.
Umm… wait a minute…
Lin Wei suddenly felt cold sweat break out on his forehead. He remembered what he had just done.
It was over. He could hold his breath, but he guessed his head was probably, maybe, perhaps, and almost certainly a goner.
Lin Wei's mind was wandering. He felt like he had no future anymore.
He was too lazy to sigh. He couldn't undo it anyway.
Lin Wei held his head high, looking confident and impressive, and strode forward.
Since it was already like this, he'd just give up! Whatever will be, will be!
He composed himself and focused on the present.
Lin Wei walked and looked around, and determined that he had already left the dream from before, because the scene in front of him was both strange and familiar. Perhaps this was a new dream, or perhaps it was the legendary Stigmata space.
A clear river flowed past, and both sides of the river were full of lush reeds, rooted in the shallow beach. A simple and dignified wooden bridge crossed over the river, connecting a "village" and a small mountain.
The village was dotted with fruit trees, which were luxuriant and full of vitality; A small path on the mountain, with a staircase made of stones winding upwards. The mountain path was swept clean. It passed through a lush bamboo forest, extending to where the eye could see, where a row of solemn torii gates could be seen.
He could see that he was surrounded by mountains in the distance, with dense forests. He could hear the sound of birds and insects all around him, and the rustling of the wind.
"No wonder Kallen didn't want to leave after she came here…"
Lin Wei curled his lip. He was very understanding. This place was too beautiful, he also wouldn't want to leave if he was here.
But it couldn't be done.
Although this place was seemingly so beautiful that it was intoxicating, it actually concealed a terrifying monster. He knew this very well.
Actually, Lin Wei had felt a moment of surprise. It was because he had arrived in this world of five hundred years ago, and not the hellish world of fifty thousand years ago, as he had expected.
Lin Wei had originally already prepared himself to step out into the Previous Era's Fire Moth base fifty thousand years ago, and face the Herrscher of Corruption who was grinding her teeth and waiting to hate him, and then fight to the death there?
But that didn't happen.
Lin Wei put himself in the Herrscher's shoes and did some thinking. He had a general idea of what the reason was—
If it was him, he also wouldn't want to show the most embarrassing nightmare of his heart to others for them to observe.
That was human nature, wasn't it?
Tsk… was she really a Herrscher?
Lin Wei felt a bit of sympathy. He felt sympathy for both Rin and the desperate but equally united and strong era from fifty thousand years ago.
They were so lucky to have two gifts, but unfortunately, they only took hold of one.
The other gift eventually turned into a disaster.
The truth of the matter, it would probably only be clear to the people from that era.
Lin Wei also stopped thinking about the things that couldn't be changed and focused on the present.
He looked around to make sure of one thing, which was that the Yae Village here had no Honkai beasts or zombies. This reassured him. Although he had expected this, reality was still not a game. They wouldn't place monsters at every corner that would continuously respawn.
But guesses were just guesses. Being able to see it for himself made him feel more at ease.
"Is this really a village?"
Lin Wei looked into the distance, looking at Yae Village at the foot of the mountain, with its mountains in the background and the water beside it, its brick and stone streets, its stone-walled and tiled houses, and its criss-crossing paths…
This place was just a bit too luxurious! Lin Wei couldn't accept it.
He scratched his chin and curiously thought, "Is the real Yae Village like this?"
Could this be a "Yae Village plus" that had been enhanced by the Stigmata space? He thought maliciously.
"The real Yae Village is just like this."
A voice that was close by came from behind him. The voice was clear and pleasant. The enunciation was clear, and although the tone was a little cold, it wasn't indifferent, but instead it made people feel fond of it.
Lin Wei was startled. He hadn't noticed that someone was approaching.
Then his body relaxed, and he smiled faintly. When he turned around, he saw that familiar figure of the miko, but she didn't have fox ears on her head. Instead, she had a beautiful head of pink hair that flowed in the breeze.
"Hello, traveler from afar."
Yae Sakura spoke again, calm and composed.
"May I ask, are you visiting Yae Village to visit relatives or friends that live here?"
