Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Seeking a Teacher
As Wentworth's words fell, Kirk and Cedric fell silent, suddenly much more composed. After a moment, Kirk forced a smile and said:
"Wentworth, have you given up on jokes and switched to telling ghost stories instead? While it fits the mood today, I'm exhausted. Senior here is heading off to rest!"
Kirk had just lifted his leg to leave when Cedric grabbed him. Fixing his gaze on Wentworth, Cedric said with a hint of concern:
"Wentworth, what exactly is going on? This isn't something to joke about lightly."
Wentworth raised his head, his eyes sweeping over the two of them, and slowly recounted what had happened in his dream.
After hearing the story, Kirk and Cedric exchanged glances, their faces full of uncertainty.
"If it were anyone else, I'd probably already be laughing and calling them a scaredy-cat. But with you, I'm not so sure," Kirk muttered, his gaze darting between Wentworth and the pumpkin.
Cedric, however, was more straightforward. "Wentworth, I believe you! That dream might really be a warning. That pumpkin—there's definitely something wrong with it!"
Hearing Cedric's unreserved trust, Wentworth felt touched.
"Thank you, Cedric. I was worried no one would believe me, that they'd think it was just a dream and accuse me of overreacting."
"Forget what others think! You're not some charlatan reading tea leaves to predict romances—you've got real talent. I've experienced it firsthand. One day, you'll be a Seer. I'm sure of it!" Cedric declared firmly.
Wentworth hesitated, then replied with a faint smile. "Uh… thanks for the vote of confidence."
Nearby, Kirk had already drawn his wand and pointed it at the pumpkin. "How about I blast it to pieces with a Reductor Curse right now?"
But Wentworth quickly stopped him. If destroying the pumpkin were the solution, he could have done it himself. However, he needed to confirm if his dream was truly a warning of the future.
If it was, the pumpkin could be the key to uncovering who was plotting against him. Destroying it outright wouldn't help him find the culprit.
"Then what do we do now?" Kirk asked anxiously, lowering his wand when he saw Wentworth holding him back.
"We're Hogwarts students. When there's a problem, we go to the teachers!" Wentworth replied matter-of-factly.
Wentworth instructed Cedric to stay behind and guard the pumpkin to ensure no one tampered with it, then dragged Kirk along toward the Headmaster's Office.
"Why are you dragging me along? Don't you know the way to Dumbledore's office?" Kirk grumbled as he hurried alongside Wentworth.
Without turning back, Wentworth replied, "I'm worried about running into danger on the way. It's safer with you around."
Kirk's eyes widened in disbelief. "If there really is a wizard daring enough to strike at Hogwarts, do you think the two of us could get away?"
"I only need to run faster than you," Wentworth said confidently.
Kirk was speechless for a moment, then sighed. "… You've got a point."
When they reached the entrance of the Headmaster's Office, they encountered Professor Snape emerging from within.
Snape frowned at the sight of Wentworth and Kirk. He opened his mouth to speak, but Wentworth beat him to it.
"Professor Snape, we're not here because we're too scared to sleep. We have something important to discuss with Headmaster Dumbledore."
Snape hesitated, then motioned for them to follow him inside.
In the office, Dumbledore, dressed in his pajamas, stood near a large jack-o'-lantern. He seemed surprised to see Snape return so soon, and even more surprised to see the two students trailing behind him.
"Ah, my young gentlemen! Up late tonight? Craving some sweets, perhaps?" Dumbledore asked with a twinkle in his eye.
With a wave of his hand, a variety of desserts appeared on a nearby table.
"Headmaster, too many sweets aren't good for your health! You're the pillar of Hogwarts, and your health isn't just yours—it belongs to the entire school!" Kirk said earnestly as he grabbed a cupcake and popped it into his mouth.
Dumbledore chuckled, nodding at Kirk's well-meaning criticism, then turned his gaze to Wentworth.
"And you, Wentworth? Care for a treat? Just remember to brush your teeth afterward," Dumbledore offered.
Wentworth shook his head slowly, his expression serious.
Seeing this, Dumbledore glanced at Snape, who appeared equally puzzled. Realizing something serious was afoot, Dumbledore's demeanor shifted.
"Well then, it seems you have something unexpected to tell me, Wentworth," he said, his tone softening. With another wave of his hand, the desserts disappeared, leaving Kirk to sulk as he reached for a treat that was no longer there.
"All right, what happened? I'm all ears," Dumbledore said, sitting down and gesturing for them to speak.
Taking a deep breath, Wentworth began, "Headmaster, Professor, I believe someone is trying to kill me."
Dumbledore's expression turned grave, his piercing gaze locking onto Wentworth. For a brief moment, the glowing jack-o'-lantern in the office flickered ominously.
Behind Wentworth, Snape opened his mouth as if to speak but then seemed to think better of it and remained silent.
"Why do you think that? What happened?" Dumbledore asked, his tone calm but concerned.
Relieved that Dumbledore didn't dismiss his concerns, Wentworth recounted his dream and how he had awoken to find the jack-o'-lantern on his bed.
When he finished, he hesitantly asked, "Headmaster, do you think I'm overreacting?"
Dumbledore shook his head and said, "No, Wentworth. You did well. Until you have the ability and confidence to face every situation, caution will always be your greatest ally."
"Now," Dumbledore said, rising from his chair, "let's see if someone truly dares to harm a student of Hogwarts!"
Wentworth and Kirk hurried to follow him, with Snape joining them after a moment's hesitation.
