Chapter 28: Flying Lesson (Part 2)
The dream of flying must live in every human heart.
Peter, who hadn't felt particularly eager about broom riding at first, couldn't help but whoop with excitement once he was in the air. Soaring above the ground, slicing through the wind with his robes flapping behind him, all his worries seemed to vanish.
It was exhilarating.
After getting permission from Madam Hooch, Peter and Harry zoomed around the training field together, streaking past the others with ease.
By the time they returned, Ron, Malfoy, and a few others had managed to lift off and were slowly gaining confidence in the air.
But some students were still stuck on the ground.
Neville was among them.
Madam Hooch knelt beside him, gently guiding his hand position and adjusting his grip on the broomstick. But no matter how many times she corrected him, Neville couldn't seem to get it right. The Remembrall hanging from his neck flickered furiously, flashing like a stage spotlight.
Malfoy and his two sidekicks didn't hold back their laughter, drawing the attention of several other students.
Ron and Seamus stepped forward to confront Malfoy and his gang, their voices rising with anger. Spotting the commotion, Harry leaned forward on his broom and glided over to join them.
Just then, Neville, who had finally managed to lift off the ground, seemed to forget something critical. His eyes went wide with panic, his face drained of color, and before anyone could react, he lost control.
He tumbled downward.
Madam Hooch had been ready for this. She whipped out her wand in a flash, but even faster, two spells shot down from above, colliding midair and catching Neville just in time.
"So many obstacles!" one voice shouted.
"Leviosa!" called another.
Neville froze five feet above the ground, arms and legs splayed like a starfish.
Tears and snot, flung by momentum, smeared his face. But at least he hadn't slammed into the earth.
"Well done, Mr. Peter Weasley. Five points to Slytherin!" Madam Hooch called out with a sigh of relief.
She quickly released the spell and gently brought Neville back down. The poor boy stood frozen in shock, completely dazed.
Madam Hooch, concerned about Neville's shaken state, gave him a few comforting words and promptly escorted him to the hospital wing.
The moment she disappeared from sight, Malfoy grew bolder. He looped his broom around Harry, cackling as he imitated Neville in a falsetto:
"Potter, did you see that? Woohoo, Mum, I'm so scared… Oh wait—my mistake—Longbottom doesn't have parents!"
That line snapped something in Harry.
Even Peter raised an eyebrow, genuinely stunned at how Malfoy could spew something so vile without a second thought.
Without hesitation, Harry rammed his broom into Malfoy's side. Ron whooped in delight from below, thrilled to see the fight finally erupt.
He and Harry had both been itching for a chance like this.
Now they were airborne, no professor in sight, and Malfoy's usual backup—Crabbe and Goyle—were trembling on their brooms, barely staying aloft.
The moment couldn't have been more perfect.
Malfoy finally realized how badly things were going for him and bolted, with Harry chasing close behind. The two of them soared toward the towers of Hogwarts, leaving the rest of the class stunned on the lawn.
"Harry! Harry!" Hermione shouted in panic. She threw an angry look at Ron before turning to Peter. "Please, Peter, stop them! If the professors see this, both Gryffindor and Slytherin will lose house points!"
Peter had half a mind to let the drama unfold, but at Hermione's urging, he sighed, mounted his broom, and shot off after them.
By the time he caught up, Harry and Malfoy were circling the spires of the castle like two birds in a territorial dispute.
Even now, Malfoy refused to back down. "Come on, Potter!" he sneered. "What's the matter, haven't eaten enough breakfast?"
Then he spat out something unforgivable. "You and Longbottom must be close. Both don't have parents, after all!"
Peter inhaled sharply, truly stunned. Merlin, he thought, does he have no filter at all?
Harry's response was immediate and furious. With a shout of rage, he lunged forward on his broom and slammed into Malfoy's side.
Malfoy lost control.
As his broom spun out from under him, Harry's face twisted with sudden guilt. He hadn't meant to go that far. Anger had clouded his judgment, but he hadn't wanted to actually hurt Malfoy.
Harry wheeled around in a flash, diving to catch Malfoy just in time. He grabbed hold of him mid-air, the two boys tumbling awkwardly together on a worn-out school broom clearly never meant to carry two riders.
A faint puff of black smoke hissed out from the broomstick, and then—it gave up. With a creak and a snap, it plummeted straight down.
Both Harry and Malfoy screamed as they began to fall from nearly ten feet in the air.
But just before impact, two voices rang out—one from behind and one from the castle window ahead:
"There are so many obstacles!"
"Shock reduction to stop speed!"
Time seemed to freeze as the combined magic halted their descent. Harry and Malfoy were locked together in mid-air, clutching each other for dear life.
Peter didn't waste a second. He raised his wand once more. "Leviosa!"
Gently, the pair drifted toward the open window of the tower. As they floated closer, Peter slowed his broom and gave a courteous nod to the stern figure standing in the shadows.
"Good afternoon, Professor McGonagall!" he said cheerfully.
Professor McGonagall's face turned pale. Her usual stern expression darkened further, her voice sharp as steel.
"It is not good at all, Mr. Peter Weasley. If you hadn't rushed over in time, or if this hadn't happened right outside my office..." Her hand trembled slightly around her wand, and her breath came quick and tight. "I'm afraid these two foolish children would have ended up in Madam Pomfrey's care for a month."
"Merlin help us, I haven't seen anything this reckless in years. Two first-year students, ignoring classroom rules, fighting each other in mid-air on school brooms..."
She took a sharp breath. "It nearly became a full-blown disaster."
Her eyes flashed as she turned them toward Harry and Malfoy, who had just landed at her feet—still clinging to each other thanks to the lingering spell.
Then she shifted her gaze back to Peter. "Mr. Weasley, although you also failed to follow classroom discipline, your quick thinking and actions saved them. For that, I am awarding twenty points to Slytherin."
"Now, return to your class. Inform Madam Hooch of everything that happened."
"Yes, Professor," Peter replied with a respectful nod.
Peter flicked his broom and flew off, leaving behind the echo of Professor McGonagall's furious shouting.
It was the first time he'd seen her that angry.
"This version is way more intense than the original," Peter mused. "I wonder if Professor McGonagall will still let Harry join the Quidditch team…"
Not that he intended to meddle in Harry's fate. Peter preferred to move through events from his own angle and let things unfold naturally.
For instance, he saved Neville today simply because he liked the boy. That was it.
As for the feud between Harry and Malfoy—well, that was bound to happen. The two were born to clash, and Malfoy's mouth was even worse than Peter had expected.
Unless he wanted to babysit Harry and keep Malfoy in check every single day, it was only a matter of time before things exploded.
Back on the Quidditch field, Peter caught Hermione watching him eagerly.
He shook his head at her and said plainly, "I already told you what happened."
Hermione's face turned pale at once.
After making sure Harry wasn't hurt, she trembled all over. "I knew it! I just knew they were going to cause trouble!"
Ron was shaken too. He rushed over to Peter and asked nervously, "Harry... Harry won't get expelled, right?"
Hermione glared at him. "Oh, so now you're scared? Then why did you encourage him earlier? Just wait and see. Even if he's not expelled, Gryffindor's house points are going to be a disaster."
For once, Ron didn't dare talk back.
When flying class ended, the two of them dragged Peter to the house hourglasses.
Gryffindor had lost 60 points. Slytherin had lost 40, though Peter had earned 20 back on his own.
The explanation was that even though Malfoy had provoked Harry first, he didn't attack. Harry's response was reckless and nearly led to a serious accident.
The points gap had widened by 40 in one afternoon. Hermione looked devastated.
Later, Professor McGonagall finally released Harry and brought some good news — he had been allowed to join the Quidditch team.
But Hermione was in no mood to celebrate, and Harry couldn't enjoy it either.
Because the other news was worse.
He had detention — with Malfoy.
