Chapter 321: Ascalon
Chapter 321 - Ascalon
Inside the shrine, Michael and Mahiro sat across from each other.
Akeno shed her usual playful demeanor, embodying the grace of a Yamato Nadeshiko.
She served freshly brewed tea to both, then quietly took a seat to the side, leaving their conversation undisturbed.
"Red Dragon Emperor, I apologize for troubling you, but I have an urgent matter to discuss and need your assistance," Michael said.
His serene presence carried a calming authority, though his expression betrayed the gravity of the issue.
"What could bring the leader of Heaven here in person?" Mahiro asked, his curiosity piqued. For Michael to descend from Heaven, the matter had to be significant.
"Over the past few days, we've detected powerful auras in remote regions of Europe, Australia, and Russia," Michael said measuredly. "These auras rival Satan-Class powerhouses."
"Connected to the Khaos Brigade?" Mahiro asked, his mind immediately turning to the group. Only they could produce so many Satan-Class threats in such a short time.
"It's uncertain," Michael replied, shaking his head. "The auras were fleeting. By the time our agents arrived, only residual traces remained. But the Khaos Brigade is a likely culprit."
"Let me know if you need me," Mahiro said with a faint smile. Facing Satan-Class foes could trigger system quests with rich rewards, and even without quests, the combat experience would sharpen his skills.
"You're truly different from past Red Dragon Emperors," Michael said, his smile warm. Previous hosts of the Two Heavenly Dragons often mirrored Ddraig and Albion's willful, self-driven natures, acting on personal whims with little regard for the bigger picture, making them loners. Mahiro stood apart.
"This matter may also concern you directly," Michael continued. "Our investigations, we've found these auras resemble those of evil dragons, long thought dead or sealed."
"Evil dragons?" Mahiro mused, recalling their role in the story, where they caused havoc across mythologies, vexing many pantheons.
"Yes," Michael nodded. "These dragons once wreaked havoc in their domains, only subdued through targeted efforts. Their return defies logic, likely due to the Khaos Brigade's machinations."
He gave Mahiro a meaningful look. "Some of these dragons hold deep grudges against the Two Heavenly Dragons. If resurrected, they may seek to settle old scores."
"They're after me?" Mahiro said, not with fear but anticipation. His fused Sacred Gear remained incomplete without a dragon soul. These evil dragons, rivaling Dragon Kings in strength, could provide the souls he needed to perfect it, saving him considerable effort.
Michael's smile softened, noting Mahiro's eagerness—a true Red Dragon Emperor trait. "I came today to give you this," he said.
A radiant golden light materialized between them. As it faded, a longsword imbued with divine aura appeared.
"Dragon Slayer Sword—Ascalon," Michael said. "You've heard of Saint George? This was his holy sword."
Mahiro nodded. In the anime, Michael gifted Ascalon to Hyoudou Issei before the tripartite meeting, where it proved pivotal against Vali. Now, it had found its way to him.
"You're giving it to me?" Mahiro asked.
"Yes," Michael confirmed. "We in Heaven debated what gift to offer you, given your aid to us."
In the holy sword incident, Mahiro's intervention ensured the swords' safe return to Heaven.
"Kokabiel was just causing trouble," Mahiro said dismissively.
"Few could've handled him," Michael countered. "The outcome could've been dire otherwise."
"Please accept it," he urged, smiling. "After our discussions, Ascalon is the ideal weapon for you."
"We believe the resurrected evil dragons are likely targeting you," Michael explained.
"With Vali aligned with the Khaos Brigade, they may overlook him for now. Your strength, combined with Ascalon's dragon-slaying properties, will give you an edge."
The dragon-slaying properties countered dragons as light did devils, acting as a natural predator.
Had Mahiro wielded Ascalon during the tripartite meeting, he might've defeated Vali without needing the enhanced Apollon.
"Alright, I'll take it," Mahiro said, accepting the sword.
Michael's sincerity, coupled with his own fondness for Ascalon, made refusal unnecessary.
