Chapter 42: Chapter 42: New Devil
Alastor climbed the stairs from the underground chamber, carrying Asia's frail body in his arms. Each step echoed in the silent church, and behind him, Kiba and Koneko followed, their faces tense with concern. Alastor's expression was calm, almost indifferent, but there was a subtle tightness in his grip on the unconscious girl.
Asia's face was pale, her breathing shallow. Alastor glanced down at her as he stepped into the sanctuary. Blood had soaked through her clothes, her wounds were deep from the brutal ritual Raynare had performed. The life was slowly draining from her body. Alastor had seen this many times before — she was dying. But despite the gravity of the situation, he wasn't panicking.
He walked over to one of the pews and gently laid her down, her blonde hair spilling across the wooden surface. The dim light of the church's candles flickered over her fragile form. Alastor stood over her, his mind already working through the next steps.
Asia had mere moments left, but in his mind, she wasn't beyond saving. There was a way to bring her back — to turn her into one of them. A devil. Just like he previously intended.
Just as he was about to act, Rias and Akeno entered the sanctuary. The two of them looked calm, even as black feathers floated down around them — remnants of the Fallen Angels they had just defeated. Rias held herself with regal poise, while Akeno still had a faint smile on her lips, the thrill of battle lingering in her expression.
"Looks like you dealt with both of them," Alastor said without turning to face them, his attention still focused on Asia.
Akeno chuckled softly, brushing off a few feathers from her sleeve. "Yes, they were weak. Honestly, not much of a challenge."
Rias stepped forward, her voice carrying a slight hint of pride. "Sending the two of us was definitely overkill. They were no match for us."
Alastor gave a slight nod, acknowledging their words, though his mind remained on Asia. "As expected,"
Then Rias asked. "How are Kiba and Koneko?"
"They did well," Alastor replied. "Still learning, but they held their own."
Kiba and Koneko on the side didn't say anything.
There was a brief silence, and then Rias's gaze fell on Asia's motionless body. She tilted her head slightly, her eyes narrowing in assessment. "She doesn't have much time left, does she?"
Alastor glanced down at Asia again. Her face had grown even paler, and her breathing had become more ragged. "No. She's fading fast. Raynare did a number on her."
Rias walked closer, standing beside Alastor as she looked down at the dying girl. There was a strange stillness in her gaze as if she were observing a puzzle rather than a person. "If you're going to make her part of your peerage," Rias said softly, "now is the right time. You don't have long."
Alastor didn't hesitate. "I was going to," he replied, his voice was steady. Though he appeared calm, there was a faint undertone of urgency beneath his words.
He wasn't worried — not exactly — but he wasn't emotionless either. He wasn't indifferent to Asia's suffering, but he knew he had the power to stop it.
Akeno watched from the side, her usual playful demeanour subdued in the presence of such a delicate situation. "It's not like you to hesitate," she said softly, her eyes glinting with curiosity.
Alastor shook his head. "I'm not hesitating. Just doing things right way."
Kiba and Koneko, who had stayed quiet until now, approached the group, their eyes filled with a mix of concern and understanding.
They knew what Alastor intended to do. Kiba glanced at Asia, his usual calm demeanour faltering slightly. "She's really going to become one of us?"
Alastor nodded. "She will. In a minute."
Koneko, who is always quiet but observant, simply nodded in agreement. "She deserves a second chance."
Rias watched Alastor closely, studying his every movement. She could sense the way he was managing his emotions — not cold, but controlled. His Lucifer bloodline made it difficult for him to show the depth of his feelings, but she knew that, in his own way, he cared about what happened to Asia. He wouldn't go through this effort if he didn't.
Stepping forward, Alastor knelt beside Asia, reaching into his jacket to pull out a single chess piece. It was a Bishop — a symbol of wisdom and strategy. He had chosen this piece for her because it would bring Asia's pull potential like in the canon. Asia's heart was pure, but she also had the spirit of someone willing to fight for those she cared about.
He placed the piece on her chest, and in an instant, a glowing red circle appeared beneath her. The air around them crackled with energy, and the power of the ritual began to swirl through the room. Rias and the others stepped back, watching as Alastor performed the process of turning a human into a devil.
Asia's body trembled slightly as the magic coursed through her, healing the wounds that had once been fatal. Her breathing became steadier, and the colour slowly returned to her cheeks. Alastor kept his hand on the piece, his eyes focused entirely on her.
The ritual lasted only a few moments, but to those watching, it felt like time had slowed. Finally, the glowing circle faded, and the church fell into a quiet stillness.
Asia's eyes fluttered open, her gaze unfocused at first. But then she saw Alastor kneeling beside her, and recognition sparked in her emerald eyes. "Alastor-san…?"
Alastor offered her a small, reassuring smile. "How do you feel, Asia?"
She blinked in confusion, still weak from the ordeal. "What happened…?"
"You're one of us now. You are a devil now," he said simply.
Asia's eyes widened as she tried to process the meaning of his words, but before she could say anything more, exhaustion overtook her, and she drifted back into unconsciousness.
"Well, that was anti-climatic,"
