HEARTS OF DIVINE RUIN (The MoonGoddess and The AlphaKing)

Chapter 46: Chapter 44 : The AlphaKing's Ground

The room Luna woke up in was vast, almost regal in its beauty.
The high ceilings seemed to stretch on forever, making her feel small and insignificant. Everything around her was drenched in soft, golden light, beaming through the enormous sliding glass doors on the far side. She could see the sun just peeking over the horizon, painting the room in shades of morning warmth. The furnishings were minimal—elegant but unassuming. A large bed with silk sheets, a single armchair by the window, and a wooden table with a simple lamp perched atop it. No elaborate decorations, no ornate carvings—just a quiet, understated beauty.
But despite its beauty, something felt... off.
Her heart pounded violently against her ribs as she looked around, wariness clawing at her chest. Where was she? This wasn't the haunted house or anywhere she recognized.
The last thing she remembered was Alex's worried face, the gentle way he'd held her... Where was he?
"Alex?" she whispered, her voice hoarse.
Silence.
The air felt too still, too quiet, and panic began to tighten its hold around her throat. She had to find him. She needed to know where he was, to know that he was safe. Her breathing quickened as she scanned the room for anything useful.
And then, she heard it—the soft padding of footsteps approaching from outside. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears as the sound grew louder and louder, each step making her muscles coil in anticipation.
She pushed herself up slowly, ignoring the sharp, lancing pain that shot through her body from the injuries Quintus had inflicted. Her ribs ached, her arms burned where his power had left blue marks etched into her skin, and the bruises along her neck throbbed with each beat of her frantic pulse. But she gritted her teeth and stood, determination pushing through the pain.
Without a second thought, she snatched the table lamp, quickly dismantling it. She ripped the cable out, her hands shaking as she gripped the now-weaponized lamp base. It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing. She tightened her hold on it, every muscle in her body taut as she pressed herself against the wall beside the door.
The footsteps stopped. The door clicked softly as it began to open.
Luna moved. Fast.
The lamp base swung through the air, the makeshift weapon connecting with a sickening thud against the man's head.

He cried out, stumbling backward in shock. Luna's gaze narrowed as she took in his build—broad, powerful, the raw strength of a wolf coursing through his frame.
Panic flashed in his eyes as he crumpled to the floor, unconscious.
"A pack wolf," she whispered, staring down at him. Her pulse pounded painfully in her temples, her breathing harsh and ragged.
I'm in a pack.
The realization hit her like a punch to the gut. She thought she'd been taken to a hotel, or some inn like usual, but now... Now she knew better. This wasn't some random place. The scent of wolves was thick in the air, the faint energy of a pack thrumming through the walls.
Her heart seized in her chest as the reality of her situation settled over her.
It can't be... she murmured under her breath, shock and disbelief warring within her. Her people—wolves—didn't exactly welcome her kind.
They had turned on her that night when the accusations started, the night when everything had crumbled. She remembers each and every word spoken and heard.
They believed it was her doing, that she had manipulated everything for her gain, and they had stood against her. Forced her to leave, demanded she step down, threatened to strip her of everything she had once been.
If they realized she was here, alive and vulnerable...
Alex might get into trouble.
She needed to find him. Now.
With a burst of adrenaline, Luna spun on her heel and bolted out of the room, skidding to a halt in the hallway. Her eyes darted around, trying to get her bearings, but every corridor looked the same—vast, echoing, lined with ornate doors and wide windows.
Which way should she go?
She moved cautiously, her senses on high alert. Voices floated toward her, low murmurs and tense whispers as the guards began to mobilize. The panic in their tone sent a chill down her spine.
"Where is she? He'll kill us if we don't find her."
"She was in that room just a few minutes ago. How the hell did we lose her?"
"Shit, he's going to be furious. The Alpha King—"
"Shut up," a gruffer voice snapped. "We can't let him know. Not yet. If he finds out the girl's gone—"
"Then what?" another voice hissed, frustration and fear thick in his tone. "He'll tear the whole damn place apart."
Luna pressed herself against the wall, heart hammering wildly. Alex—they were talking about Alex. He was here. And he was angry. Her jaw tightened as she crept forward, slipping past the guards' line of sight, her movements quick and silent. She didn't trust her own people, not after what they'd done, but she had to find him. She had to get out of here before—
"There!" a shout rang out, and she froze.
Panic shot through her as she ducked around a corner, pressing herself into the shadows. Footsteps thundered down the hall, shouts and cries filling the air as guards scrambled, their voices laced with fear.
"Find her!"
"Search every room!"
"The Alpha's orders—don't let her out of your sight!"
Luna gritted her teeth, her pulse racing. The entire palace was in an uproar, guards and servants alike scurrying around in a frantic search. But she was a goddess once, and a wolf above all—if they thought they could trap her here, they were sorely mistaken.
Silently, she slipped past another set of guards, her senses heightened as she moved through the winding hallways. She needed to be smart, needed to be quick. She couldn't risk being caught, not when Alex was involved. Her steps took her deeper into the palace, the rooms growing more isolated, more deserted.
She rounded a corner, her breath coming short and fast, and nearly stumbled into a vast, empty corridor. The walls were lined with heavy wooden doors, each one shut tight. She hesitated, glancing around. Which way now?
A flicker of movement caught her eye—guards approaching, their footsteps heavy. Without thinking, Luna slipped into the first door in front of her, her fingers gripping the handle tightly as she eased it shut behind her.
Silence.
Her chest heaved as she leaned back against the door, her pulse thundering in her ears. She strained to hear, listening as the footsteps drew closer... then faded away.
A shaky breath escaped her, and she turned, glancing around the room she had stumbled into. It was large, filled with the faint scent of dust and age. A massive table dominated the center, flanked by high-backed chairs. Bookshelves lined the walls, their contents untouched, and the windows were covered in heavy drapes that blocked out most of the light.
It looked like a study—a place of meetings, or perhaps a strategy room. But everything was covered in a thin layer of dust, untouched for months, maybe even years. No one had been here in a long, long time.
Where am I? Luna thought, her gaze sweeping over the room.
