Chapter 2: The Vanishing Tide

The beachfront estate in Kahala is a picture of paradise waves rolling in rhythm with the breeze, tiki torches illuminating the lush greenery. But the serenity is shattered by flashing blue lights, a growing crowd of murmuring partygoers, and the grim discovery of Jonah Kahele's body in the pool.

Steve McGarrett steps out of the Five-0 SUV, his expression hard and focused. He scans the scene as officers hold back onlookers. Danny Williams joins him, the ever-present mix of skepticism and concern etched on his face.

"Another billionaire murder?" Danny mutters, tugging at his tie. "What is it with rich people and dramatic exits? You'd think they'd hire better security."

Steve shakes his head. "No sign of forced entry. This wasn't a break-in. Someone here wanted him dead." His eyes narrow as he walks toward the pool.

Lou Grover is already at the scene, his large frame commanding authority. He glances over the crowd of guests. "These people all look like they stepped out of a yacht commercial. Odds are, one of them knows something."

Steve kneels by the pool, studying Jonah's lifeless form. He gestures to faint bruises around the neck. "This wasn't a drowning. Look at the marks. Strangulation." He holds up a broken necklace clasp found near the body. "And this? It was ripped off."

Lou crouches beside him, his face grim. "Whoever did this staged it. Tossed him in the pool to buy time."

Kono Kalakaua approaches, notebook in hand. "I've been talking to the guests. Most of them are saying the same thing Jonah was his usual charming self. Except for one person: Alana Marquez, his fiancée. She says she found him, but something's off. She's too calm."

Danny raises an eyebrow. "Too calm? That's like checking the 'suspicious' box in bold."

Chin Ho Kelly joins them, holding a pearl necklace in an evidence bag. "Found this near the pool filter. Matches the clasp you found."

Steve rises, his jaw tight. "Chin, check security footage. Kono, keep talking to guests. Danny, let's see if Alana has anything to say for herself." He glances at Lou. "You and I are going to dig deeper into Jonah's business dealings."

Lou nods, already flipping through his phone. "Rich guy like this? Guarantee there's skeletons hiding in his walk-in closet."

At Five-0 HQ, Alana Marquez sits in the sterile interrogation room, her demeanor composed but visibly strained. Her hands tremble slightly as she sips a glass of water. Steve and Lou enter, their presence imposing.

Steve sits across from her, his tone measured. "Alana, we're sorry for your loss. But we need to understand what happened last night. Can you walk us through it?"

She takes a shaky breath. "Jonah and I were hosting a fundraiser. He was so excited talking about the reef restoration project, shaking hands with everyone. At one point, he said he was going to the bar to get a drink. I went to the cabana for towels. When I came back, he he was in the pool." Her voice cracks.

Lou studies her closely, his tone cutting through her emotion. "And you didn't see anyone else near him? No suspicious faces?"

Alana hesitates, her eyes darting. "No. Jonah didn't have enemies. He was kind. Generous. Everyone loved him."

Steve leans forward, sliding the evidence bag containing the pearl necklace across the table. "We found this near the pool. Matches the clasp found on his body. Is it yours?"

Her face pales, and her hand instinctively goes to her neck. "It, it was. But it broke earlier in the evening. I left it on the bar."

Steve's expression darkens. "One last question. Jonah ever mention a company called Pacific Horizons?"

Her lips tighten, and she avoids eye contact. "They wanted him to sell some land for a refinery. Jonah said no. He didn't want to destroy the reefs."

After leaving the room, Lou and Steve regroup with the team in the tech room, where Chin is reviewing security footage.

"Got something," Chin says, pointing to the screen. The grainy footage shows Alana slipping away from the crowd just before Jonah's body was discovered. An hour later, she's seen boarding a private yacht.

"Whose yacht is that?" Lou asks.

"Belongs to Harlan Price, CEO of Pacific Horizons," Chin replies. "And get this: Jonah's offshore accounts were drained the same night. Ten million, gone. The account it was transferred to? Tied to Alana."

Danny throws up his hands. "I knew it! The fiancée's always involved. This is, like, Murder 101."

Steve's jaw tightens. "If she's working with Price, they've got to be stopped. Let's bring her in before she disappears."

The team tracks the yacht to Molokai, anchored in open water. Night has fallen, the ocean a vast expanse of inky blackness punctuated by the gleam of the yacht's deck lights.

The Five-0 team gears up in a speedboat, cutting silently through the waves. Kono mans a sniper rifle from a nearby cliff, her calm focus unshaken.

"Two guards on the upper deck," Kono whispers through comms. "I'll take them out when you're ready."

On the boat, Lou loads his rifle with practiced ease. "I swear, McGarrett, every time you say 'quick mission,' we end up storming a boat. I didn't sign up for the Navy."

Danny grins despite himself. "At least it's warm. Try doing this in a Chicago winter."

"Focus, you two," Steve snaps. "We're going in quiet."

Steve and Chin rappel onto the lower deck, taking out two guards with swift precision. Lou and Danny secure the engine room, incapacitating another group of armed men.

Inside the control room, Alana and Harlan Price are arguing. Alana's voice is frantic. "We need to leave now! They'll find us!"

Price snarls. "Shut up and let me think."

Before they can react, Steve and Lou burst into the room. Alana grabs a gun, her hands trembling as she points it at Steve.

"Don't come any closer!" she shouts, her voice cracking. "You don't understand!"

Steve raises his hands, his voice calm. "Alana, it's over. Drop the gun. No one else has to get hurt."

Tears stream down her face. "Jonah was going to ruin everything. He didn't understand what this deal meant. Billions, Steve. We could've done so much with that money."

Lou steps forward, his tone icy. "You strangled a man to protect your payday. You're not saving the world you're destroying it."

Alana's grip falters, and she lowers the gun. Price tries to escape but runs straight into Danny, who delivers a swift punch. "Going somewhere?" Danny quips.

As the Coast Guard arrives to secure the scene, the team watches the sunrise from the deck, exhaustion and satisfaction etched on their faces.

Back at HQ, Steve stands by the large windows, staring out at the ocean. Lou approaches, holding two cups of coffee.

"You okay?" Lou asks, handing him a cup.

Steve nods, though his expression remains heavy. "Jonah gave his life trying to protect these islands. Makes you wonder if we're doing enough."

Lou takes a sip of his coffee, his voice steady. "McGarrett, every day we go out there, we make this place a little safer. You can't stop every storm, but you can keep the island from sinking."

The rest of the team gathers in the common area, sharing malasadas and lighthearted banter.
