Harry Potter: Using science to be IMMORTAL

Chapter 384: Chapter 383: Mythical Creatures

David Watson woke up on a medical bed.

A person resembling a doctor was working nearby, removing various electrodes from David's body. Then, he said, "Congratulations, Sergeant Watson, you are now a War Wolf."

After his body adjusted slightly, he was guided by medical staff to a treadmill to test his cardiorespiratory fitness, followed by grip strength and boxing tests, and then tests for arm strength, jumping ability, endurance, and more.

Then, they injected a bunch of things under his skin to verify whether his body had any abnormal immune reactions after the transformation.

After half a day of testing, his condition was excellent, with the doctor remarking that he was as strong as an ox.

Finally, he was taken to the "Transformation Project Department," where he finally saw his second form and fully understood why this special operations unit was named "War Wolves."

He had transformed into the legendary werewolf, complete with a long wolf's snout, grey fur all over his body, and claws on his hands and feet - he was practically a giant wolf standing upright.

This form did not frighten David; in fact, he was thrilled.

David was born in Hampshire, growing up near the "New Forest." His father, an archaeologist and outdoor adventurer, often took a young David deep into the forest, teaching him many jungle survival skills and instilling in him a deep affection for the wilderness.

Now, as a wolf, he felt even closer to nature.

Therefore, during his first outdoor training, he ignored the specified activity range set by his instructors and dashed into the depths of the forest, embarking on a hunt like a true wolf.

He missed the time to return to camp and intended to spend the night in the forest, but the instructors found him.

A young man in a strange robe appeared with a twist of space, and then the instructors caught the werewolf David with a large net. They used that bizarre space-traveling magic to bring him back to camp, where they hung him outside the camp for an entire night.

The young man in the robe later became his teammate.

His name was Draco Malfoy, supposedly a wizard.

Yes, a wizard.

David Watson now knew much more. It turns out this world is powered by an energy known to scientists as "void particles" but colloquially called "magic" by ordinary people.

It was this energy that transformed him into a werewolf.

Wizards are masters at manipulating magical energy. Unlike werewolves, who can only transform with the help of magic potions, wizards can shape magic at will with their weapons – wands, casting dazzling spells.

Thus, wizards are the absolute core of any team.

Their squad consisted of seven members, including Draco. The other six were all werewolves.

They underwent much training, where, contrary to David's expectation, they focused on tactical coordination and conventional training with firearms rather than simply getting used to their werewolf bodies.

The firearms, however, were eye-opening for him. There were guns that could automatically aim and shoot at targets, and the "Storm Gun," which could replicate a single bullet into ten, all of which shattered his worldview.

Besides these, they also attended a "Magical Disaster General Knowledge" class taught by a few wizards. Through it, David learned about many strange creatures and how to deal with them – a subject David didn't excel in, remembering mostly that enchanted bullets usually sufficed to turn them into sieves.

After three months of training, Draco's squad received a mission to assist a pure wizard team in handling a magical disaster.

They completed the mission within ten minutes of arriving at the scene: they turned a group of Quintapeds into sieves with the Storm Gun.

Afterward, they officially joined the job, becoming part of the Magical Resurgence Strategy Bureau's rapid response force – the War Wolves Unit Team Twelve.

Their missions weren't burdensome, typically occurring every two or three days and often very straightforward. Sometimes, they didn't even need to engage in direct combat; a call for aerial support was enough to eliminate the enemy.

However, this comfortable routine ended during one mission.

They encountered a Chimera.

The beast was as large as a heavy truck and extremely cunning and agile. It ambushed and killed a team member as soon as they entered the forest.

David watched helplessly as the massive beast tore off Zat's head with one bite and then used its tree-trunk-thick tail to fling Rooney more than ten meters away.

David instinctively pulled the trigger towards it, but the bullets that could easily penetrate thin steel plates merely rippled on the beast's skin like water.

"It has magical protection! Use the anti-magic armor-piercing bullets…" The captain had barely shouted this warning before being incinerated by flames spewed from the beast's mouth.

"Retreat! Something's wrong with this Chimera!" Deputy Team Leader Samira pulled Draco away, his spells equally ineffective against the beast, "Retreat, use the Portkey charm!"

...

"Why is the Chimera so strong?" Draco kicked a trash can in anger, "It's more than twice the size mentioned in the books!"

"We were too careless. We should've requested a magical satellite reconnaissance before entering the forest. If we knew it was a Chimera, we would've been more cautious!"

"Zack, the captain... and Rooney..."

"This isn't right. We need to report this situation," Deputy Team Leader Samira said, "Did you notice how the beast defended against bullets? It wasn't just through its fur. It seemed to use protective magic and could even breathe fire. This wasn't mentioned in the original data, which is highly unusual."

"Could a wizard be helping it secretly?" someone speculated.

There were rumors of wizards from other countries harboring resentment towards British wizards. Perhaps this was their doing?

"It doesn't seem like it. If it were a wizard, our Portkeys might not have worked," Samira reasoned.

"Evolution," David suddenly said.

"What?"

"Or rather, a return to form," David muttered, "Haven't scientists said that magical levels are rising? The scale and number of magical disasters are increasing, hence our need."

"Draco, you mentioned that learning and using magic has become easier than before, right? Could it be possible that for these mythical creatures, it's the same?"

"Chimeras are powerful monsters in mythology, aren't they?"

"My father told me the legendary story of Bellerophon slaying the Chimera when I was very young. In the story, the Chimera, born from the union of the monster Typhon and the serpent Echidna, is a mythical creature."

"Now, perhaps they're just regaining some of their original powers."
