Harry Potter: Transmigrated Detective Link

Chapter 257: Doctor Kane

Just the day after Lupin's departure, Hogwarts officially began its final exams.

This was terrible news for the majority of students, because too many things happened this year, and they simply couldn't focus much on studying.

Students like Link, who hadn't yet reached fifth year, were relatively fortunate.

Because they didn't have to deal with those frightening wizard-level exams under these circumstances.

So these exams were relatively easier overall.

For Link, this was even more so.

Take the Care of Magical Creatures class as an example.

Because almost the entire second half of the semester had been devoted to raising and training the Skars.

So Hagrid's final exam questions became various pieces of knowledge related to the Skars, as well as simple commands to make the Skars obedient, like handshake, sit down, that kind of simple content.

For Link, this posed no difficulty.

After all, the Skars obeyed Link unconditionally, and Hagrid's knowledge about the Skars had all come from Link.

Thus Link effortlessly earned an Outstanding.

In Potions, the situation was similar.

Although Snape's exam questions were still extremely difficult as usual, for someone like Link who had already learned how to brew Felix Felicis, they posed no real challenge.

During the exam, Snape, acting as invigilator, was too lazy even to patrol near Link's desk.

As for other subjects, in Transfiguration, Professor McGonagall's exam was preliminary human body transfiguration, changing the hair's color and length.

Though the question appeared simple, any transfiguration involving the human body was never easy.

In Charms class, it was an examination of trajectory and accuracy in spell-casting, focused on aiming.

In Defense Against the Dark Arts, all the exam questions were about werewolves, which was perfectly reasonable, since Snape had spent a lot of time teaching that topic.

Divination was more unusual.

Its exam was a joint test with Astronomy.

Students needed to use the star charts collected in the Astronomy exam to predict the weather for the coming week.

Finally, results were graded based on accuracy.

It's worth pointing out that many students were guessing randomly in this exam.

Because they couldn't even use the most basic divination formulas fluently.

Overall, these exams were a strange mixture of everything imaginable.

Nevertheless, relying on last-minute cramming and his strong memory and skill level, Link managed to complete them all smoothly.

And Link estimated that, except for relatively meaningless subjects like History of Magic, he should earn grades ranging from Acceptable to Outstanding in the others.

After the week-long final exams ended, everyone's nerves relaxed, and they began to party hard.

In the final week before results were announced, they had enough time and energy to do anything they wanted.

Amid such a joyful atmosphere, Link's mood improved considerably.

But just the next day after exams concluded, as Link and Emily sat in the Great Hall planning their later date in Hogsmeade Village, Cedric rushed up to Link, breathless, saying, "Link, something's come up. Dumbledore told me to tell you to go to the Headmaster's office immediately."

Upon hearing this, Link frowned, and Emily, reacting even faster, immediately asked, "What's going on to be so urgent?"

"I asked, but Dumbledore didn't want to tell me specifics," Cedric shook his head, "In any case, you'll know when you get there."

Link and Emily exchanged a look, then accompanied Cedric to Dumbledore's office.

With Cedric's incantation, the stone gargoyle in front of the office leapt aside, revealing the passage inside.

"Link, be careful!"

Emily urged anxiously. Link offered a reassuring smile and proceeded inside.

Although he had prepared mentally to some extent, when Link truly entered the Headmaster's office, he was still startled.

Because Madam Flamel was also here.

Today, she wasn't dressed as stunningly as she often was at home; instead she wore an all-black, lightweight French-style dress.

On her head was a lace half–hat that concealed half her face with a layer of fine black lace, all while just revealing a pair of vivid, blood-red lips.

Inside the office, besides her, were Snape and Dumbledore.

The atmosphere among them looked tense. Snape's expression was exceptionally grim; Dumbledore's face bitter. It was as though the three of them had just had an intense dispute, and the result was that Madam Flamel had emerged victorious.

As Link entered, all three, Flamel, Snape, and Dumbledore, focused their gazes squarely on him.

"Mom? What are you doing here?"

Link, ignoring Snape and Dumbledore, smiled and addressed Madam Flamel.

At that, Madam Flamel forced a smile and returned it. Then she turned and coldly said to Dumbledore and Snape, "You'd better remember every single thing I just said, or don't blame me for being rude!"

"Especially you, Dumbledore, stop playing your dangerous little games! I am now a governor of Hogwarts. And I am not like that foolish, incompetent Malfoy."

Madam Flamel's tone remained as forceful as ever, but to Link's surprise, Snape and Dumbledore made no reaction.

It was as if, they acknowledged her words.

Madam Flamel, clearly pleased by their response, then took Link's hand and began to leave.

Link frowned and asked, "Wait? What's actually going on? Mother, where are you taking me?"

At this, Madam Flamel halted. She looked at Link with a complicated expression as if trying to form her words.

At this moment, Dumbledore, who had remained silent since Link entered, sighed and said, "Link, your mother came to help you get an excused absence. She has arranged for a doctor who might be able to solve your physical problem."

"Is that what your argument earlier was about?"

"Not at all," Madam Flamel replied quickly. "I was merely, as a governor, holding some school-related discussions with Principal Dumbledore and Professor Snape."

Link didn't believe that. He looked to Dumbledore.

But Dumbledore, clearly unwilling to elaborate, cheekily pulled a face at Link, then quickly masked it under Madam Flamel's murderous glare.

"In any case, go with your mother to see the doctor, Link."

This time Link didn't refuse. First, he bid farewell to Snape and Dumbledore, then obediently took Madam Flamel's hand, leaving the office with her.

In the corridor, Cedric and Emily waited for them. When they saw Link and Madam Flamel emerge together, they quickly greeted her.

Madam Flamel's attitude toward them was noticeably kinder. She even chatted briefly.

But when Emily suggested she wanted to leave Hogwarts with Link early, Madam Flamel coldly refused without hesitation.

Under Emily's puzzled, slightly hurt gaze, she promptly led Link out of Hogwarts Castle and boarded a modest horse-drawn carriage.

This surprised Link, Madam Flamel always rode in her maroon convertible, yet today she'd switched to this traditional carriage.

Even more surprising to Link was what came next.

As soon as the carriage started moving, Madam Flamel took Link's hand and asked tenderly, "My little Link, are you hungry? Shall we go to Diagon Alley first and get your favorite Volcano Ice Cream?"

"Um… we just had lunch, but if you haven't eaten, I'm happy to accompany you…"

"No, no," Madam Flamel shook her head, "I already ate before coming. How about we go to the Quidditch Supplies shop?"

"I think they have a new Firebolt brooms on the shelves. Although you don't really like Quidditch, you still need the proper equipment, right?"

Link said nothing, just stared at Madam Flamel in confusion and astonishment.

If Flamel was anxious and intent on taking him to see a doctor, and the carriage made sense… those earlier comments she made were another matter entirely.

Because her words gave Link a powerful déjà vu, like a doctor gently coaxing you to indulge in your favorite foods after a check-up.

Pursing his lips, Link said with a complex expression, "Mom, is my condition hopeless?"

Madam Flamel's smile faltered. She gently stroked Link's cheek and said, "That's nonsense! Your condition is already healed, isn't it? These remaining issues are just minor ailments, easily treated!"

"And those things you said earlier…"

"Ah! I was just so excited to see you because it's been so long. Hahaha, that's it!"

Madam Flamel, realizing her earlier words were poorly timed, began to explain.

Link said nothing further and nodded, choosing to believe her for now.

But inwardly, he felt a sinking weight.

As of now, with Occlumency LV5, Mike didn't seem like a grave issue.

The real issue lay in the mysterious force within him, slowly influencing his personality and eroding his humanity, gradually nudging him toward cruelty and evil.

Mike, a purely dark soul, might have been cleaved off from Link during long exposure to that corrupting force.

Because the influence seemed gradual, Link had not given it serious thought.

But from Madam Flamel's reaction, it looked like a deeply problematic situation.

"Master, young master! Where are we heading next?"

At that moment, the small driver named Button peered in and asked in his shrill voice.

His question snapped Link out of his thoughts. He looked at Madam Flamel and nodded.

Understanding his meaning, Madam Flamel said to Button, "Directly to Doctor Kane's place."

"Understood, Master!"

Button ducked back in. Then, inside the carriage, Link felt a spinning sense, like being tossed inside a washing machine, that lasted nearly five minutes.

When everything finally settled, Button's voice came again from outside, "Master, young master, we've arrived."

"Y-yes."

Link responded, feeling nauseous.

More importantly, that spatial tremor clearly stemmed from using a portkey.

That meant they must be very far from Hogwarts, perhaps even outside Britain.

And indeed, as Link suspected.

When he and Madam Flamel disembarked, he immediately realized the sun's position overhead had shifted significantly relative to Hogwarts.

That meant they were in a different time zone.

They stood in a spring-like forest.

Tall spruce trees surrounded them, and they were standing on a stone-paved forest path.

This path was clearly unmaintained, many cracks, and some sections overgrown with moss, slippery and risky to traverse.

But Madam Flamel didn't mind; she took Link's hand and walked deeper into the forest.

They walked for nearly ten more minutes until they reached a small chapel built on a clearing in the woods.

The chapel mirrored the forest path, neglected, gray, with ivy crawling the outer walls.

Link frowned and asked, "Exactly what is this place?"

"Germany," Madam Flamel said.

"Here lives a doctor. Though his temperament is somewhat eccentric, he is indeed an expert in taboo academia, especially skilled in bloodline fusion experiments. If anyone in this world can still cure you, it should be him."

Her voice sounded low and full of sorrow mixed with nostalgia.

That made Link feel both somber and grateful.

He reflected that to secure such an "expert," Madam Flamel must have paid a high price.

Link and Madam Flamel lingered only a moment in the distant clearing, then approached a closed old wooden door.

They simply stood there without knocking.

Inside, it seemed the chapel's owner had sensed their arrival, after just a moment, the door opened.

Creak~

With the grating of long-neglected hinges, Doctor Kane finally appeared before Link.

Not resembling any angel in white, this Doctor Kane was wrapped entirely in an oilcloth coat, wearing bulky leather protective gloves.

Most notably, he wore a full-beaked plague doctor mask.
