Chapter 243: Reunion of Old Friends
Ten minutes later, Link and Snape left the empty classroom.
Link held the thick black notebook as he walked ahead, flipping through it excitedly.
Snape followed behind him. Though his expression remained icy, the corners of his mouth were slightly raised.
He was in a very good mood.
The frank conversation they had just had in the empty classroom had mended his relationship with Link.
In fact, thinking carefully, Link's behavior had been somewhat excessive, but it was understandable.
If it had been the younger Snape, he might've done even worse just to find out the truth.
At least Link had repented at the critical moment, that was already quite good. Snape felt that his years of care for Link hadn't been in vain.
As for the notebook, so be it, let Link have it.
He was going to teach Link those things sooner or later anyway. Giving them now didn't really matter.
Besides, the contents of that book weren't that easy to master anyway...
The only thing that made Snape a little unhappy was that Link actually thought he hadn't given him a Christmas present because he was angry.
That was pure slander.
He, Severus Snape, how could he possibly be such a petty person?!
The real reason was simply that he truly didn't know what to give Link.
That wasn't his fault.
He had never been good at giving gifts since he was a child.
As for the time he gave Lily flowers, that had been a rare moment of inspiration.
Of course, Snape would never tell Link the real reason.
Because he knew full well that with Link's nasty personality, if he found out the truth, he would definitely laugh at him.
Snape was lost in these chaotic thoughts, but suddenly realized that Link had, at some point, turned his head and was now looking at him with a smirk.
'Crap! I forgot this brat can use Legilimency! Did he see me secretly smiling just now?'
Snape thought uneasily, and quickly resumed his cold expression, "What are you looking at?!"
Link waved a hand dismissively and chuckled, "Ah, nothing, nothing. Go on, don't mind me."
'This brat definitely saw it!'
Thinking so, Snape fully activated Occlumency, barely suppressing his urge to punch Link.
"Speak, how are you planning to catch Sirius Black?"
"Well, you don't need to worry about that. I've had the plan ready for a while. For now, I'm going to get a good night's sleep first."
Hearing Snape's question, Link closed the notebook and chuckled softly.
Although Black had escaped during their last fishing operation, the crucial bait was still in his hands, wasn't it?
Since that was the case, they could just fish again.
Link was very confident in the bait that was Harry and Peter Pettigrew. As long as he upgraded his method, Black would fall for it again.
And that ugly cat, Crookshanks, he hadn't let it go for no reason.
Thinking this, Link turned to look through the corridor's arched window toward the direction of Hogsmeade Village.
He had the feeling that the snowstorm there had gotten even heavier.
———
At the same time, a shadowy figure was cautiously flying through the snowstorm, avoiding the Dementors on the streets, heading toward a dilapidated house on a wilderness.
It was the infamous Shrieking Shack of Hogsmeade Village.
Since 1971, terrifying howls had occasionally come from the abandoned shack.
The villagers believed it was haunted and didn't dare go near it. They even enthusiastically warned any would-be explorers to stay away.
Ironically, this made it the most famous haunted house in the entire British wizarding world!
Many who had visited swore they saw ghosts there.
At this moment, the shadowy figure showed no fear of the Shrieking Shack. It crashed straight through the boarded-up main door and stormed in.
Thud!
Sirius Black was tossed onto the dusty wooden floor like garbage. After doing this, the shadow slowly faded and finally revealed the person hiding within, Remus Lupin.
"Remus! Can't you be gentler? Hahaha!"
Sirius, lying on the floor, struggled to get up and started laughing maniacally after a few complaints.
Then, he opened his arms, seemingly wanting to give Lupin a hug.
But Lupin's face was cold as he raised his wand and pointed it at Sirius's forehead.
Sirius froze in place and pointed at his face in disbelief, "You don't recognize me, Remus? I'm Black! Sirius Black!"
"Of course I recognize you! You're the one who got James and Lily killed!"
Lupin said coldly, though his hand holding the wand was trembling slightly.
At those words, Sirius's eyes turned red. As if possessed, he suddenly lunged forward, pressing his forehead against Lupin's wand tip, and screamed wildly, "Yes! I got James killed! Kill me, Remus! I'm begging you, kill me!"
Lupin's hand trembled even more.
He had never really wanted to kill Black, at most, he just wanted to send him back to Azkaban.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have saved him earlier.
This was the brother who had shared all his youth with him.
And Lupin could tell, Sirius didn't just look crazed. He truly wanted to die.
He wanted to repent with his own death, to make up for the mistakes he had made.
Lupin took a deep breath and decided to knock Sirius unconscious and hand him over to the Ministry of Magic.
Because some things couldn't simply be undone just because you apologized.
But just then, Sirius's crazed eyes slowly cleared.
He suddenly seemed to remember something and staggered back a few steps, shouting, "No! You can't kill me! At least not now! Remus! Go save Harry! Harry's in danger! That bastard Peter has been hiding by his side this whole time! Kill him first, then kill me!"
"Peter? What kind of joke is this?! Peter died 12 years ago! Killed by you! You even dare mention him in front of me?!"
Lupin also got worked up, and pressed his wand back against Sirius's forehead.
But Sirius showed no fear. He painfully pulled out a piece of parchment from his torn pocket and unfolded it, "I can prove it!"
"The Marauder's Map?! Why do you have this?!"
Sirius ignored him and pointed to several overlapping footprints on the map, "You say Peter is dead? Then who is this?"
Lupin looked closely and saw names stacked above the footprints, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Harry Potter, and, Peter Pettigrew.
"This, how is this possible?! If he were alive, why hasn't he shown up all these years? Unless…"
Lupin stumbled back in disbelief. Then he looked back up at Sirius and said, "Unless he was the one who betrayed James and Lily! You secretly switched Secret Keeper with him?!"
Sirius nodded painfully, his sunken eyes staring at Lupin, tears faintly glimmering.
"Merlin…"
Lupin groaned and pulled Sirius into a hug.
The sudden embrace broke Sirius.
He clung tightly to Lupin, crying and howling, streaks of tears running down his dirty face.
They held each other like that for a long time before Sirius pushed Lupin away, half-mad, half-serious, "Remus, now's not the time for a reunion. Remember what I just said? You must go back and kill that traitor!"
Lupin weakly shook his head, "I can't go back. Dumbledore and the others must have already discovered I'm not in the castle."
"Just say you were chasing me! Wait, I'll cut off one of my hands for you to take back. That way they'll believe you!"
Sirius raised a dagger, about to cut.
Lupin quickly stopped him and pointed at the names of Link and Snape on the Marauder's Map, "Don't bother. Link's smart. He and Snape definitely won't be fooled by that."
Sirius looked at the map and growled, "Link Flamel! That monster!"
This time, Lupin didn't refute Sirius.
After seeing so many strange things about Link, he somewhat agreed with Sirius.
Just then, a screeching cat meow and scratching noise suddenly sounded in the room.
Lupin instantly raised his wand warily.
But Sirius looked delighted and hurriedly opened a trap door in the corner.
Out popped a ginger, ugly cat that he hugged.
Lupin was stunned.
He knew this cat, it was Hermione's Crookshanks. But how had it ended up here?
And it seemed quite familiar with Sirius?
"Remus, I've got a plan."
Sirius cuddled with Crookshanks for a while before looking up at Lupin.
"That red-haired kid Ron protects Peter too well, Crookshanks couldn't catch him directly. But that won't stop him from luring Harry and the others, including Peter, here!"
"Uh… are you sure that'll work? He's just a cat…"
"Crookshanks can do it! Right, Crookshanks?"
Crookshanks meowed in response and leapt back into the trapdoor.
———
"What?! You want to use Harry Potter as bait? Absolutely not!"
The next morning in Hogwarts Castle, Snape roared upon hearing Link's plan.
Link, walking ahead, smiled at the corner of his eyes and replied, "When did you start caring so much about Harry? Weren't you the one who bullied him the most? Besides, his father James used to bully you too."
At these words, Snape was speechless. After a while, he snapped, "Th-That's different! I'm a professor! I'm responsible for my students' safety!"
Link whistled mockingly, "Wow! Professor Snape, you really are dedicated to your job!"
Snape's face turned red with anger. He reached to grab Link, but Link dodged swiftly.
Knowing not to push this petty man too far, Link quickly said, "Relax. With the two of us watching from the shadows, nothing will happen to them! Plus, Dumbledore is around too, right?"
Snape already had his wand half-drawn, but hearing the name "Dumbledore" made him stop. His expression darkened as he asked, "Fine. Then what exactly do you plan to do?"
Snap!
"It's simple!"
Link snapped his fingers and walked into the Great Hall.
Snape wanted to follow, but Harry, Hermione, and Ron entered from the other side, making him retreat into the shadows.
Link, however, walked straight toward them without any attempt to hide.
"Hey! Harry, Ron, Hermione. Good morning!"
"Morning!"
Harry responded tiredly, still groggy.
Ron walked up with concern, "Link! Are you okay? What happened last night? Why were you taken to the headmaster's office too?"
Hermione, upon seeing Link, froze briefly and lowered her head in silence.
Link didn't even notice her and smiled, "Actually, I was attacked by Sirius Black too. But clearly, he's no match for me. I chased him when he tried to run."
"Cool!" Ron's eyes sparkled.
Even though Link's words sounded a bit like Gilderoy Lockhart's bragging, Ron totally believed him.
After all, ever since Link helped him recover Scabbers, Ron believed there was nothing Link couldn't do.
Harry, however, had a different focus. He tensed up and asked, "Did you catch him?"
Link stared at him for a moment before sighing, "Unfortunately not, Harry. He escaped through a secret passage."
Harry didn't reply, fists clenched, and Ron quickly tried to comfort him.
Link continued, "But the professors and I came up with an idea last night. If all goes well, we can catch him."
"What is it?!"
"Harry, the secret passage is near the Whomping Willow. That's how Sirius sneaks into Hogwarts. I need you three to take Scabbers and Crookshanks over there and pretend to play."
"That might lure him out. The professors and I will be nearby. The moment he appears, we'll strike!"
Link said seriously, "Of course, you can refuse, Harry. This plan carries risk. No one knows whether that madman Sirius Black might attack you before we can react. So I must ask your opinion."
"You want to use Harry as bait? Harry, you can't agree!"
Hermione, who had been silent, suddenly looked up in disbelief.
But Harry didn't even look at her. He clenched his fists and said, "I agree. If it means catching the bastard who betrayed my parents, I'll do anything!"
"Then the plan starts after your classes this afternoon. Good luck!"
With that, Link patted Harry's shoulder and turned to leave the Great Hall.
At the door, he bumped into Snape, hiding in the shadows.
Snape was staring unblinkingly at the trio who had already started arguing again inside.
Noticing Link's arrival, he murmured, "Such a reckless, self-righteous fool. Letting revenge cloud his judgment so easily, just like..."
"Just like his father," Link interrupted with a smile. "You were going to say that, weren't you?"
Snape glared at him but said nothing, turning and walking away.
