Chapter 53: 53. Harry's Invitation
Why didn't you write it down?!"
After staring at Ivan for a few moments, Snape finally gave up on trying to get a response from him and turned to quietly scold him instead.
In the classroom, there was the sound of quills scratching and parchment rustling.
The potions class continued, but the Gryffindor students were struggling.
Snape paired them up and asked them to create a simple potion for treating boils.
He walked around the classroom in his long black cloak, watching as the students weighed dry nettles and crushed snake fangs. Almost all the students complained about him.
The only ones who weren't being criticized were Malfoy and the group consisting of Ivan and Hermione.
Malfoy was Snape's favorite, and Ivan was doing an excellent job, so much so that Snape couldn't find anything wrong with his work.
Unfortunately, despite their good performance, Snape still didn't pay them much attention.
'Is it because we didn't make any changes?'
Ivan didn't worry too much about it. He had to admit that Snape was a good teacher.
He clearly broke down the steps for making the potion and explained everything. It was easy enough that even the students could follow along without any trouble.
Just as Snape said, as long as you weren't careless, you couldn't mess up the potion he demonstrated.
Of course, if a student managed to make improvements and handled the materials better, Snape would be generous with his praise.
He wasn't the kind of teacher who expected everyone to just follow orders.
He encouraged learning and applying that knowledge, allowing students to draw their own conclusions.
Snape himself had learned this way.
"Ditott!"
Suddenly, a cloud of green smoke erupted from the underground classroom, accompanied by a loud hissing noise.
Ivan turned to see that Neville, who was working with Harry, had melted the crucible into a twisted shape.
The potion inside the crucible splattered onto the stone floor, burning holes in the shoes of several nearby students.
Within seconds, everyone in the class was standing on their stools as the overturned crucible spilled potion everywhere.
"Idiot!" Snape shouted, about to wave his wand, but then he heard the word "disappear."
In an instant, all the potion vanished without a trace.
Snape paused for a moment, looking at Ivan, who had put his wand away. He wanted to praise him but held back his words.
"I suppose you added the porcupine quills while the crucible was still on the fire, right?"
Neville looked surprised, but thanks to Ivan's quick thinking, he didn't end up in the school hospital like in the original story.
However, Neville avoided trouble, but Harry did not.
"Potter, why didn't you warn him not to add the porcupine quills?"
Snape added, "Do you think he's a good student just because he made a mistake? Gryffindor lost a point because of you."
"???"
Harry was utterly confused, looking as if he was thinking, 'Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing here?'
"Don't argue," Ronald kicked Harry under the table. "I heard that Snape can be really unreasonable."
Harry could only glare at Snape in frustration.
But Snape didn't need any real reason to target him. "You're unhappy with the professor's warning? Gryffindor loses another point because of you."
This point deduction felt like getting into trouble at work.
At that moment, Harry wanted to strangle Snape. He had never encountered such an unreasonable teacher before.
Slytherin, from the head of the house down to the students, really wasn't a good bunch.
"See?" Ivan said to Hermione as they brewed the potion Snape had assigned. "Don't get involved in the future; it'll only cause trouble."
"But…"
Hermione wanted to know more: "Why?"
Why was Snape always after Harry? Did they have a personal feud?
"It's a long story," Ivan replied with a small smile. "I'll explain it to you when I have more time."
"Professor!"
Ivan raised his hand. "We've finished brewing the potion."
Their completed potion was excellent, and even Snape couldn't find anything wrong with it.
However, Snape didn't give them any extra points.
"It seems that sometimes, fame has its benefits," Snape said. "At least you and Miss Granger followed the instructions well."
'...'
This kind of favoritism really angered Hermione.
She had never encountered such an irritating teacher before.
If it weren't for Ivan, Hermione would have been tempted to argue with the professor for the first time in her Hogwarts career.
"Thank you, Ivan," Neville said as they headed to the cafeteria together after class.
He was grateful for Ivan's help. Without it, Neville thought he might have been covered in potion that could melt the floor.
If that had happened, a trip to the hospital would have been unavoidable.
"Neville, Potions class is indeed tough for you," Ivan said honestly. "You have a hard time remembering things, so it's easy for you to mix up the steps and the potions."
There was nothing Ivan could do about that.
The best solution was to keep teaming Neville up with him and Hermione in future potions classes.
This way, he would have two top students guiding him every step of the way.
If talent was lacking, hard work could help make up for it.
They say that practice makes perfect. Ivan's teaching approach for Neville was all about practice.
Practice until it feels automatic and becomes second nature.
"I understand," Neville said obediently. He knew Ivan was only trying to help him, and he valued the chance to learn alongside them.
After lunch, Ivan and Hermione decided to go to the library to return some books and borrow new ones.
"Ivan," they ran into Harry and Ronald. Harry said, "Hagrid invited me to his cabin. Do you want to come with us?"
"Hagrid?"
Thanks to Ivan, Hermione's relationship with Harry and Ron wasn't very strong.
They didn't have much in common, and her first impression of Hagrid was the giant she had met when she first arrived by train.
"Yes," Harry replied. "Hagrid lives by the Forbidden Forest. He invited me over for afternoon tea."
"Thank you."
Ivan didn't decline. He didn't know why Harry invited him, but he appreciated the gesture.
From his perspective, he could sense the emotions of those around him.
He could see how everyone felt about him.
For example, Dumbledore was a kind old man who cared for his students, and Hermione looked up to him with admiration.
Ron and many other students envied Ivan, but they also felt a bit jealous and awed by him.
As for Harry Potter…
He envied Ivan too, but not in a jealous way; it was more about curiosity and gratitude.
Ivan could see that Harry wanted to be friends with him.
'Pure and innocent, just like a fairytale protagonist,' Ivan thought positively about Harry and gladly accepted the invitation. "It's an honor. By the way, does Hagrid have a limit on how many people can visit?"
"I mean…"
Ivan gestured to Hermione, who looked very curious.
"Of course!" Harry exclaimed excitedly. "I think Hagrid would love to have the smartest wizards and witches in our school come to see him."
After leaving the Dursleys, Harry had become much more polite.
Language is an art.
Calling Hermione "the smartest little witch" made her very happy.
After all, that was a compliment from Harry Potter, the hero of the wizarding world.
Hermione didn't think much of Ronald, but she had a good impression of Harry.
If Ronald could just vanish, she would happily welcome Harry into their group.
In short, it was simple:
Ron, get lost! Stay away from my Ivan!
