Chapter 109: Chapter 109: Stealing the Power of the Gods
Wade was stunned.
After Winky was released by her master, she was devastated, drowning in sorrow and alcohol, but did she ever try to go back?
Later, when Barty Crouch Sr. and Jr. were moving in and out of Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament, what was Winky doing?
Did she ever think about trying to help her former master, who had been placed under the Imperius Curse?
And what about other house-elves who were released or accidentally granted freedom by their masters? Did they ever try to return, hoping to be re-employed by their former masters?
Or... did they collapse to the ground in tears, accept their fate, and then wander away?
Though Wade knew many house-elves, they all belonged to Hogwarts. Most of them seemed quite content with their current lives—none of them spoke of yearning for freedom, nor had any of them been released.
This included Zoe and Maggie... They only wanted to be treated kindly and with respect by wizards, but they had no desire for freedom.
Professor Murray didn't dwell on the topic for long.
After making his point, he continued, "After the success of creating house-elves, many wizards became obsessed with life alchemy."
"But this wasn't an easy endeavor. Many were killed by their own creations, and life alchemy gradually became forbidden. What truly led to the complete prohibition of this magic was the birth of another type of creature."
"In the 15th century, a wizard named Ekrizdis built a castle on an island and lured Muggle ships to the island. He did unspeakably horrifying things to those Muggle sailors and crew."
"It's said that when people were later sent to investigate, they refused to speak about what they found there. The least terrifying detail was that the place had become a breeding ground for Dementors."
"And that place is Azkaban."
"Dementors feed on happiness. Simply being near them makes people feel depressed and hopeless. They can also suck out human souls, leaving their victims as soulless husks, like themselves. The only known effective defense against them is the Patronus Charm."
"These creatures cannot be permanently killed. Even if they are temporarily destroyed, they will eventually re-emerge from rotting, dark places. They transcend life and death."
"The immortality that humans have longed for... Dementors possessed it from the moment they were created."
"—So in a way, this form of life alchemy could be considered extremely successful, but it's of no benefit to wizards."
Wade suddenly had a question. "Professor, wizards can use the Patronus Charm to defend against Dementors, but Muggles can't even see these creatures, let alone resist them..."
"Yes, that's true," Professor Murray responded. "Are you worried that these creatures might harm your parents? In the early 18th century, the Ministry of Magic made an agreement with the Dementors to guard the prisoners of Azkaban, forbidding them from leaving."
"Although I've always thought it was a foolish decision, so far it's worked reasonably well."
Wade shook his head and softly said, "No, I was actually wondering—during the wizard wars, why didn't the Dark Wizards or Death Eaters try to use the Dementors?"
Professor Murray was momentarily stunned. After a pause, he replied:
"Because to Dementors, the magically powerful souls of wizards are far more tempting than those of Muggles... and very few wizards actually know how to cast the Patronus Charm."
He paused, then added, "That's about the end of the story. I think you should understand by now—life alchemy is both wondrous and dangerous."
"It allows wizards to create beings that surpass the level of their own existence. Every instance of life alchemy is a unique, unrepeatable process. Just as no two humans are exactly alike, no two alchemically created life forms are the same."
"Creating life is a power that belongs to the gods, but wizards can steal a small part of that power."
"This temptation is immense, beyond comparison. Any skilled alchemist will eventually walk down this path, sooner or later. No matter how much the Ministry of Magic tries to ban it, there will always be wizards who seek to explore the forbidden realms of life."
"I just hope that if one day you also become interested in alchemically creating life, you'll remember what we talked about today—remember the failed examples, and remember what I've taught you—"
'Imagine boldly, but verify cautiously.'
"You can never be too careful on the path of alchemy."
"Of course, for today, we're still focusing on the basics—how to give thought to an inanimate object..."
...
Professor Murray's life alchemy lessons only lasted three days, after which he gave Wade a few books and a pile of alchemy materials, leaving him to slowly understand through practice.
After dinner, Steven invited Wade to visit his farm.
"If you have friends you get along with, you can invite them too. My farm has many interesting little animals that kids love," Steven said.
Wade asked, "Won't that be a bother?"
"Not at all. Some of the little creatures really enjoy the company of children—they'd be thrilled."
Steven teased, "And if there's a girl you like, this could be a great opportunity!"
Wade slowly replied, "I'm only twelve, why would I be thinking about relationships?"
"Exactly," Professor Murray nodded approvingly. "While you're in school, you should focus on studying and not get distracted by these things. But you—"
He suddenly turned to Steven, scolding, "When are you going to get a girlfriend? Are you planning to live your whole life with your birds and snakes?"
Steven shrank back, mumbling softly, "You told me the same thing when I was in school... but all my classmates who dated in school ended up getting married right after graduation..."
"You graduated from Hogwarts twenty years ago! In all that time, if you weren't cooped up on the farm all day, you could've had eight relationships by now!
Remember at the last party? The daughter of the Shafiq family kept smiling at you. Did you even try to follow up with her?"
Steven froze for a moment, confused. "Wait... someone from the Shafiq family was there?"
Professor Murray glared at him, and Steven immediately fell silent.
Thankfully, since Wade was present, Professor Murray didn't continue scolding his son.
After dinner, Steven tugged on Wade's sleeve and pulled him upstairs to pack his bags.
Once upstairs, Steven, looking troubled, said, "Let's hurry and leave… otherwise, if my dad remembers, he'll start yelling at me again..."
Wade had no objections. He took out a pencil case and silently cast a spell. The pencil case expanded into the size of a backpack, and Wade packed his books, alchemy materials, and a few personal items inside.
Then the backpack returned to its original pencil case size.
That was the beauty of Occamy skin.
When Wade first got it, it was the size of a caterpillar, but it could stretch to a much larger size.
Wade had folded it seven times, allowing it to appear in different sizes.
At its smallest, it was a pencil case—this was the only form that hadn't been enchanted with an Extension Charm. At its largest, it was the size of a wardrobe, with an even more spacious interior.
Another benefit of the Extension Charm was that no matter how many items were placed inside, it felt as though they were being stored in another dimension, and the user would only experience the weight of the box itself.
So Wade could carry it in his coat pocket and move around freely.
