Chapter 428: Chapter 429: God Has Abandoned the USA
Texas.
Fort Hood Military Base.
The piercing air raid alarms echoed in the air, accompanied by the constant booming of explosions. Surprisingly, despite being one of the largest armored force bases in the USA, equipped with field anti-aircraft missiles and automatic anti-aircraft guns for defense, it seemed as if all these defenses were silent, making no sound at all.
Inside an underground bunker, a soldier with a face covered in dirt rushed into the musty temporary command post. As soon as he entered, several officers looked up at him, "What's the situation?"
"Sir, zones A7, A8, B4, and B6 have been destroyed! Our nearby allied forces have almost entirely been wiped out."
"Damn!" a lieutenant colonel slammed his fist on the table.
Everyone had a look of utter defeat; this was the most baffling and frustrating war they had ever fought. The enemy remained in the skies from start to finish, unseen. The attack was incredibly sudden; just as they realized the declaration of war from Russia, before even receiving orders from higher-ups, the first round of air raids had already precisely hit every significant building in the base, nearly obliterating the armories of two armored divisions in one fell swoop.
Following that, there was massive interference with wireless communications, forcing them to use landlines for communication. However, this point-to-point method was too slow for conveying orders. Before they could receive instructions on how to act, the Pentagon was gone.
They still couldn't understand how the enemy managed it. The soldiers never saw a living enemy, just endless bombs dropping from the sky and a terrifying, tiny drone specifically targeting officers. This palm-sized, seemingly wooden drone was fast and intelligently identified commanders in a crowd to explode directly in front of them.
Under the suppression of these swarm drones, the commanders had no choice but to seal themselves in the underground bunkers. After several rounds of bombings, they were split into isolated zones, initially connected by landlines, but soon, the enemy destroyed the communication stations, leaving fewer and fewer allies to contact until they resorted to using binoculars to observe the situation in various areas.
"What do we do?" asked an officer. "Most of the soldiers don't even know what's happening, and most of them aren't even armed!"
The base housed a cavalry division, a mechanized infantry division, and a military police brigade, but in a non-war state, even before the national war mobilization order was issued, they were just conducting routine training. Most soldiers were unarmed, and their powerful war machines were sitting ducks in the open, becoming scrap metal without even seeing the enemy, wasting hundreds of billions of dollars.
"Forget counterattacking," a colonel sighed. "This blitzkrieg is unprecedented. It's as if we're fighting aliens! Their capability for war deployment, surprise attacks, and control over the battlefield is unimaginable. It's like they're fighting a group of primitives. We can't deal with this enemy. The priority now is to save as many soldiers' lives as possible!"
"Nathan, is the camp's broadcasting station still operational?"
"It is, sir!"
"Good, Nathan, go to the broadcasting station and relay my orders. Tell all soldiers to hold their positions and preserve themselves. Don't attempt to fight!"
The soldier hesitated but saluted promptly under the colonel's stern gaze, "Yes, sir!"
However, just as Nathan stepped out of the bunker towards the broadcasting station, a beehive drone suddenly appeared overhead and exploded, tearing his upper body to shreds.
An officer who witnessed this was about to curse when suddenly, a dark cloud in the sky split and surged towards them, "They've found us!"
Before they could react, the bunker's entrance exploded, and several child's toy-like, crudely made drones, each with a grenade attached, rushed in.
"Damn it!"
"God..."
They attempted to fire, but the previous encounter had emptied their bullets. Facing imminent death, they were petrified.
However, the expected explosion didn't come. After a few seconds, the drones hovering at the entrance flew out of the bunker as if retreating.
Confused, they cautiously approached the damaged entrance to look outside. They saw swarms of drones exiting the buildings like locusts, forming into clouds that flew into the bellies of several large drones hovering like passenger planes above. It was a spectacular sight reminiscent of birds returning to their nests.
Once all the "clouds" were absorbed, the large drones moved northward.
"Have they retreated?" someone asked uncertainly.
Before they could revel in their survival, the ground's rumbling made their hearts sink again.
Looking towards the noise, an officer pointed at a flickering metallic object atop a collapsed building, "What is that?!"
Upon closer inspection, it appeared to be a person, but not a real one. It was a creature with metallic joints and a white plastic shell, resembling a headless dog standing on its hind legs with human-like forearms. This "dog" climbed atop the building and pressed a horn.
"Loud and clear!"
An English-accented voice then announced across the base, "Attention all USA soldiers, we are the 32nd Mixed Brigade of Russia. Texas is now under our control, and you are all prisoners. Lay down your weapons and wait in place. Do not resist futilely."
After the message, a low wall crumbled, and mechanical "dogs" led a group of heavily armed Russian soldiers.
Facing these monster-like mechanical soldiers, everyone was in shock.
"What kind of enemy are we fighting against?"
One officer, overwhelmed with emotion, exclaimed, "Devils, they must be devils!"
"God has abandoned the USA!"
