Chapter 28: I've Always Had Strong Self-Control
The sea breeze drifted in through the open window as the two sat silently, letting the calm atmosphere wash over them. After their beach adventure, they had dinner at a cozy local restaurant, then wandered through the nearby streets until they stumbled upon a charming souvenir shop.
It was filled with trinkets—brightly patterned Aloha shirts, elegant Muumuu dresses, coral jewelry, and wall-to-wall macadamia nuts and Kona coffee. They didn't buy much, but before leaving, they picked out matching seashell necklaces—a simple memento of a perfect day.
By the time they returned to their hotel, it was already 9:00 PM. After dropping their bags by the door, they collapsed on the sofa near the window.
"Kiyoko-nee, aren't you going to take a bath?" Hayato asked, stretching lazily.
"Hmm... just let me rest for a moment," she mumbled, eyes closed. Her glasses sat on the table, and her long hair fell like silk over her shoulder—effortless and beautiful, even in rest.
Taking that as a cue, Hayato headed for the bath first. He filled the tub and rinsed off in the shower, finishing quickly like most boys do. Once clean, he slipped into a bathrobe and stepped back into the room.
"Kiyoko-nee, the bath is ready…" he started—but stopped when he noticed her softly dozing on the sofa.
He gently shook her shoulder. "Come on, you'll sleep better after a bath."
"…Mm? Oh, thanks, Hayato. Sorry, I must've dozed off."
She stood, yawned delicately, then grabbed her skincare items and disappeared into the bathroom.
While she freshened up, Hayato changed into his pajamas and laid on the bed, flipping through the channels on the TV. To his surprise, some local Japanese programs were airing. He watched quietly until Kiyoko finally emerged again, her cheeks faintly pink from the hot water.
She quickly slipped into her own pajamas and joined him on the bed.
"What're you watching?" she asked, leaning against the headboard beside him.
"Just some variety show," he replied, keeping his tone casual—even though he could feel the tension in the air.
Their shoulders were almost touching. A tiny move of the hand would've been enough to close the distance entirely. Despite having spent days together, the intimacy of this quiet moment still made their hearts beat a little faster.
Kiyoko smelled subtly sweet—maybe the lotion she used?—and Hayato, ever the gentleman, focused hard on the TV screen, refusing to let his thoughts wander too far.
Eventually, the warmth and the day's exhaustion took over. Kiyoko yawned, and Hayato turned off the TV. They slipped under the covers, turned off the lights, and let the quiet of the night settle over them.
The Next Morning
The sunlight gently lit the hotel room. Kiyoko stirred first—and realized she was nestled comfortably in Hayato's arms, her head resting on his arm, a hand lightly on his waist.
She blinked.
This… is a little too close.
Carefully, she tried to slip out of his grasp, but Hayato instinctively tightened his hold. Her heart skipped a beat. She looked up to check—he was still asleep.
Kiyoko sighed softly, unsure what to do. Just then, Hayato stirred and opened his eyes. A moment of sleepy confusion passed before realization hit him like a wave.
"Uh… K-Kiyoko-nee, how did we end up like this…?"
"…I should be asking you," she replied, her voice flustered. "Anyway, let me go."
Hayato blinked, then quickly loosened his grip. Kiyoko got up in a hurry, muttering something about needing to wash her face and vanished into the bathroom.
Left behind, Hayato sat up, rubbing the numbness out of his arm.
This is testing my self-control way too much, he thought. Just one more day. We go home tomorrow. Hang in there, me…
Later, both of them acted like nothing happened. Kiyoko returned, refreshed and calm. Hayato had also changed and kept things casual. After breakfast downstairs, they headed out for their final day in Hawaii.
They visited ʻIolani Palace, admired its rich history and European-style architecture, and later explored the Honolulu Museum of Art. Their last stop was Diamond Head, a volcanic crater known for its panoramic views.
After the scenic hike and a full day of sightseeing, they returned to the hotel, packed up, and rested. The next morning, they met up with their driver from before and headed to the airport.
Return to Japan
After an eight-hour flight, they finally landed in Japan. It was already late Monday afternoon. Though Hayato wanted to head straight to volleyball practice, he knew there wasn't enough time to get back to Miyagi before the club ended.
So, after saying goodbye to Kiyoko at the station, he returned home, unpacked, and messaged Hinata to let him know he'd be at practice the next day.
And with that, their brief but unforgettable Hawaii trip came to an end—leaving behind memories, seashell necklaces, and emotions that neither of them could quite put into words yet.
