Haikyuu: Reborn in Karasuno

Chapter 21: A Golden Ticket to Paradise — Hawaii for Two

"That's very rude."

Kiyoko-nee lightly scolded Hayato, clearly unimpressed with his offhand comment.

"There aren't many people around, it's fine. Oh, right, Kiyoko-nee…"

"Hmm?"

"You've worked really hard these past two days too."

"I'm alright. You guys are the ones who worked the hardest."

Hearing Hayato's unexpectedly kind words, Kiyoko's heart fluttered. She tried to remain humble, but the sweetness of his compliment lingered.

"Washing our clothes, recording our data, even cooking for us... come on, that's no small effort."

"Okay, okay I worked very hard"

Kiyoko giggled softly, giving in to his praise.

After getting off the train, the two stopped by the shopping district to pick up groceries. Just as they were about to head home, they ran into President Yamamoto, the head of the shopping street association, who was packing up his stall near the entrance.

"Yo, Kiyoko-chan! Hayato-kun! Buying ingredients together again?"

"Good evening, President Yamamoto. What are you up to?"

Hayato, spotting a familiar box among the clutter, paused curiously.

"Oh, this? We're holding a lottery event right now! You've probably gotten some entry tickets with your purchases, right? You can use them to draw! Grand prize is a 3-day, 2-night trip for two to Hawaii!"

President Yamamoto gave Hayato a wink, clearly teasing them as a "couple."

Hayato turned to Kiyoko. She hesitated for only a moment before pulling a few exchange tickets from her bag.

"Well... it's free, right? Might as well try."

"Since you're in the mood, Kiyoko-nee, you should do the honors."

Handing over the tickets, Kiyoko stepped up to draw. The first spin produced a white capsule — a participation prize: tissues.

She smiled, unbothered, and went again. Another white ball. Another pack of tissues.

"Last one's yours, Hayato."

"Eh? You sure?"

"You're the one who bought all the ingredients anyway."

"Fair enough! Alright, O Great Spirit of Fortune, hear my wish — a tropical trip with Kiyoko-nee!"

Kiyoko couldn't help but laugh at Hayato's over-the-top prayer. Then, as he placed his bag down, he gently took her hand in his.

"Hehe, since it's a trip for two, we should draw it together, right? That okay with you, President?"

Kiyoko blushed slightly but didn't pull away — they'd held hands on dates before. It was President Yamamoto who looked the most flustered by their open affection.

"Go ahead, go ahead!" he coughed, stepping aside.

Hayato counted them down, "Three... two... one!"

They pulled the lever together.

Click, clack...

Out rolled a shimmering golden capsule.

For a second, all three froze.

Then President Yamamoto leapt into action, ringing a bell furiously.

"C-congratulations! You've won the grand prize — a trip to Hawaii for two!!"

Overjoyed, Hayato spun Kiyoko around, hugging her tightly. She squeaked and lightly hit his chest, flustered by the public affection.

Straightening her clothes, Kiyoko blinked in disbelief at the glittering capsule.

"It's really the grand prize…"

President Yamamoto handed over a decorated envelope. "Your tickets and accommodation voucher. Keep them safe! Man, Hayato-kun, your luck is unreal."

Still reeling, they made their way home, Hayato practically floating. Kiyoko, however, was quiet — still absorbing what had just happened. The moment they'd pulled the lever together... was it fate?

Blushing at her own romantic thoughts, she snuck a glance at Hayato. He looked genuinely excited about going to Hawaii — with her.

"Ah, Kiyoko-nee, it says we depart next Friday. That's just five days away!"

"Right… do you have a passport, Hayato?"

That simple question made Hayato beam. Kiyoko's curiosity meant she was considering going.

"Yep. I got one in my first year of high school. You?"

"I got mine the same year."

"Then the last step is your parents agreeing."

Kiyoko instantly looked around. No pedestrians. Good. She raised her bag threateningly.

"You're teasing again!"

Hayato laughed and dodged, their laughter echoing under the streetlights.

At dinner, Kiyoko mentioned the lottery win.

Her father merely nodded — which, for him, meant approval.

Her mother sighed. "You just got back from training camp and now you're going on a trip? And missing a school day?"

But after some mild grumbling, she agreed.

Later, Kiyoko messaged Hayato: "My parents said yes. I can go with you."

Like a kid who just got fireworks.

"Really!? That's amazing! Oh! There's a beach near the hotel. Wanna bring a swimsuit?"

"I… haven't bought a new swimsuit in years."

That was true. Kiyoko had been too busy with track and then managing the volleyball team. She hadn't been to the beach in forever.

"No problem! Gym's closed tomorrow for maintenance, right? Let's go shopping after school."

"…Alright then. I'll listen to you."

Downstairs, her parents were still discussing the trip.

"You're okay with them going abroad together?" her mom asked, crossing her arms.

"Kiyoko-chan's not a child anymore. And Hayato — we've known him for years. Besides…" He changed the TV channel. "Did you see the look in her eyes when she talks about him?"

"Pfft. You were the one chasing me back then."

"And you fell for me, didn't you?"

He smirked. "If you're worried, just give her that."

Eyes twinkling with understanding, her mother nodded and went to the bedroom.

A few minutes later, a muffled "M-Mom! Why would you—!" came from upstairs.

Chuckling, Kiyoko's father leaned back in the sofa and smiled at the sound of his daughter's embarrassment.

Meanwhile, Hayato texted Hinata that he couldn't train with him tomorrow. He messaged Coach Ukai as well, asking him to fill in.

Both replied quickly with thumbs-up emojis.

Satisfied, Hayato put away his phone and started tackling his homework.

Later, another message came from Kiyoko. They finalized plans to meet after school.

As Hayato bent back over his books, Kiyoko sat cross-legged on her bed, staring at the small square box on her bedside, cheeks glowing like a red lantern.
