Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Becoming prey
Victor: "What.the.fuck…" Victor murmurs underneath his breath, his voice beginning to shake as his eyes seem to be fixed on those, monsters, in the cages. He had been a detective ever since his early 20's, and up until this day, he had never saw something so bone chilling…
Rouge stands on the stage, big, sly and manic smile on his face as his arms are spread open, presenting proudly the creatures in the cages. They were making all sorts of noises, all of which sent a cold shiver down Catherine's and Victor's spine.
Rouge: "This, is our winning ticket, our last move before we finally get what we all have been fighting for! Once we'll have enough, which trust, it will be soon, those mingy police officers, FBI's agents and politicians will fall and bow down to us all, they will regret the day they've put those stupid labes on us!" He spoke loudly into the microphone, his eyes narrowed with pride and vengeance as he looked around the ballroom, his eyes landing on the two as his smile widened.
Rouge:"But I'm sure everyone here wishes for a demonstration, surely you all aren't bought by just my words, a bit disappointing I might say, but it's inevitable." Rouge then clicks a button on a control, and the cages open.."Please, thank mister Detective Victor and his, lovely, partner for volunteering. Do give us a good chanse~"
Another press of the button and suddenly the creatures attention was solely on Victor and Catherine, in mere seconds they jumped from the stage and began to run at the two. Victor acted fast, grabbing Catherine's hand as hard as possible, uncaring if it hurt him, and bolted it out of there. The quick and loud sounds of the metal door slamming open, the gutteral sounds of the monsters chasing after them like starving lions, the heals of their shoes clicking on the cemented ground as their ran as fast as possible, panting, eyes wide open and their hearts pounding in their heads.
Suddenly one of Catherine's heals breaks, tripping her and almost falling on his knees if it wasn't for Victor to catch her back up and help him.
Victor:"Take them off, NOW!" He screamed desperately. Catherine didn't argue, she maybe loved his heels but she damn well loved his life more.
He kicked his heels off his feet quickly and Victor dragged him again, luckily a few of the creatures were distracted by the heels, chewing and biting at them like it was food.
Turning the corner and seeing the car in sight, Victor opened the car doors for Catherine to get inside before turning around and pointing his gun at the two monsters still on their back. Two gunshots fired at their heads and both went down, now if they were unconscious or dead he didn't know, neither cared. He got inside the car and drove off as fast as the car could go then making a stop after they were far enough from there..
Panting and looks of shock, terror and pain but they didn't dare to look at one another.
Victor:"That's-That's what they've been doing? How-I..No human or sifter or any magical creature is capable of doing such a thing, are they?" He turned his attention to Catherine, his eyes searching for him to say something like-'of course not! We must be schizophrenic!' But it was just hopeful wishing.
After Catherine didn't answer nor looked at him, Victor took a, deep, long breath in, and slowly exhaled it. His hand ran through his hair, then he took notice of the lack of shoes on Catherine's feet.
Victor:"Here, take my shoes." He said, beginning to unty his shoes, to give to Catherine.
Catherine:"What?.." She whispered, being brought back into reality from his trance of shock and now looking at Victor with an expression of confusion.
Victor:"I'm not letting you walk barefooted anymore, god knows Derick will bite my head off in the literal way and I physically cannot stand to watch you go and hurt your feet more than you already have, so take my shoes, please, songbird." He looked up at her, his eyes still covered by the eye contacts for the, now failed, disguises they made up, but he could still see the mellowing look in his eyes.
Victor took off one shoe, his hand going down and gently holding Catherine's ankle, pulling it up enough to hold his shoe at an inch away from placing the shoe on his foot.
Catherine:"But what about yourself? You live in an apartment and have stairs to climb, your feet will hurt more!"
Victor chuckled, smirking up at Catherine.
Victor:"I have spare clothing and shoes in the trunk. I'm still a werewolf, angel, and full moons are still a pain in the ass. Now, stop worrying and let me put something to protect your pretty feet."
Catherine sighed even though a small flush covered his cheeks as he looked away. They stayed quiet while Victor placed his shoes on her feet. She watched him, watched his hands as he placed the shoes gently, even tying the shoe laces on them—all with a smile on his lips and his eyes concentrated..he couldn't lie, it was a nice sight to see.
Victor:"You're staring." He said with a smirk as his eyes glanced up at her.
Catherine:"You're the one who's putting your own shoes on my feet, of course I'm going to stare."
Victor chuckled, shaking his head lightly as he finished up the job.
Victor:"There we go." His voice was soft, calm, soothing even, Catherine could fall asleep listening to him, especially now after all that running huffing, he was exhausted—and the yawn he let out only made it all the more obvious.
Catherine:"Thank you, Victor." He murmured as his hand rubbed his eyes then rested on his own cheek, looking away, lost in dark thoughts. Victor's smile fell, looking at Catherine as his hand didn't slip off his ankle.
Victor:"What's wrong, songbird?" Victor's eyebrows were furrowed, concern edged on his face as he looked at Catherine with soft, puppy eyes. Catherine stood silent, his eyes squinting as if he was pushing back tears before he sighed and covered his face with his hand now.
Catherine:"They're dead, aren't they?" His voice cracked slightly.
Victor:"What?"
Catherine:"My siblings, my baby brother, my baby sister—if they're stuck with those ,monsters, that are creating those goresome creatures. God knows they aren't going to be alive for long or not even alive anymore as we speak." Catherine's hands shook, his eyes tearing up as he bit his trembling, bottom lip. The thought of his baby siblings being mushed up, stitched together with other people, humans or not, turned into those creatures. It consumed and ate him whole.
Victor was taking aback by the sudden confession from Catherine about his feelings. He was never one for comfort, always too awkward or tense, but he couldn't leave his songbird like that, his heart ached too much for her.
Victor:"What-no,no, no,no—Songbird, I'm sure they're alive."
Catherine:"How are you so sure of that? We don't have any evidence they are!"
Victor aheunk at those words, he knew he didn't have any evidence of that, neither had the right words in his mind to be able to comfort Catherine properly. He sighed, his fingers massaging Catherine's ankle as he watched small tears flow down his face.
Victor:"I know I don't have the evidence, nor the words—but trust me when I say, your siblings are alive and I swear on my life I'll bring them back to you." There was a silence between them for a bit, with Catherine's tears being dried with Victor's free hand and looking into each other's eyes.
Catherine:"You're so shit at comforting people." Catherine let out a small, raspy snicker before he sighed, followed by Victor's chuckle as he caressed Catherine's cheek with his thumb.
Victor:"Sorry, angel. I'm, not the best with emotions.."
Catherine sighed, smiling and leaning into Victor's touch as he hummed out a simple response. The atmosphere was, slightly awkward, along with the shared silence between each other in the car. After a few more seconds of silence, the two decided it was best to go back to each other's homes and regroup and talk over all of it once they've calmed down more. Victor walked Catherine to her home, where Derick nearly gave him a new scar on his face when he saw Catherine's face all smudged with his makeup and with her sails all drowned out.

Derick:"Want to tell me what happened?" Derick walked inside Catherine's room, looking at him, the disguise off as he stood at his desk with a slumped position and eyes unable to look up.Derick sighed, walking closer to Catherine, close to placing his hand on his shoulder.
Derick:"Cat,-"
Catherine:"I shouldn't have gone..I shouldn't have the mansion, I should've stayed oblivious—"
Derick froze, he's only seen Catherine this broken down once in his life, and this time, it made a shiver go up his spine at what Catherine could have seen inside of there.
Derick:"Wha-wait, Catherine, you aren't making any sense—"
Catherine:"They're making experiments on them, Derick. Mutation of some sort, merging different people together like playdooh to create one, disgusting, awful monster. I think he wants to use them for that too.."
Derick took in a deep breath, going to Catherine's side, where his bed was. He sat down and looked at her with a stern, serious expression.
Derick:"Don't be ridiculous, you know as well as me and Ellie that, that man is using those kids to fish you towards him. He knows they're your weakness and can make you break to his will by using them." Derick's hands hold Catherine's shoulders, making him look at him. "You need to be stronger than that, don't let him destroy you again."
Another deafening silence, only shaky breaths. Not too long after, Catherine broke down again, leaning his body forward and slumping his head on Derick's shoulder.
Catherine:"I'm scared, Derick…"
His shaky, quiet tone broke Derick's serious facade, showing more of his paternal instincts when his arms wrapped around Catherine, murmuring into his hair.
Derick:"I know, Cat…But we'll get through this, we've gotten through it once, we can do it again.."
