Chapter 38: The Reunion of Destiny_2
"I am a lucky beggar, if I hadn't been discovered, I should have died long ago in Gaulunaro, which means every day I live now is a gift of life. In fact, Selyu should have died on a winter night many years ago."
"Thinking about it this way, death is nothing to be afraid of, it's just a little painful at first."
A rare smile appeared on the cold face.
"It was nice to meet you, Miss Eve Phoenix."
Eve stared at her blankly, with a flood of strange emotions surging in her heart. She wanted to speak but couldn't, not knowing how to express herself.
The perplexed gaze gradually turned firm, and she clutched Selyu again, dragging the girl to run wildly.
"No, you can't die."
Eve gritted her teeth, she was a child of the Phoenix family, with the blood of the Phoenix flowing in her veins. Eve's greatest dream was to appear in the Hall of Manifestation, walking side by side with the fathers of honor. She was destined to shine brightly, but how could she endure being unable to save others?
It was not so much that she didn't want Selyu to die, rather it was that damned self-respect driving Eve. She couldn't let Selyu die here, as if she had admitted defeat to this cursed life. She couldn't lose, absolutely not.
"Get out of my way!"
Picking up a chair from the side, Eve directly hurled it at the demon obstructing their path, not knowing where this girl got such strength. The chair made a howling sound as it flew through the air, and then heavily smashed into the demon's face, causing the chair to break apart completely. The impact knocked the demon backward, and Eve jumped over it, stepping on its head.
They were almost out of this terrifying hell, but at that moment, Eve's pace slowed and she stopped in place.
"I can buy you some time."
Selyu supported Eve, her injured ankle slightly raised.
If at this time Eve chose to abandon Selyu, she still had hope of escaping, but Eve shook her head.
"How long do you think your body will keep them eating?"
Eve looked at Selyu, striving to appear more relaxed.
Don't even mention Selyu, even a whole squad of soldiers wouldn't satisfy these demons. Rather than buying time, it was more like graciously facing death.
They were still unable to escape, as they reached the final point, demons surrounded them.
For some reason, these demons seemed to be pursuing them purposefully, keeping a relatively safe distance from the two the entire time, like hunters driving prey, and this place must be their final encirclement.
The shadows were filled with the sound of sucking blood, these hungry demons long unable to endure, but it seemed something was intimidating them, making them hesitate to advance.
"Just like a dinner."
Selyu suddenly spoke, her cold voice sounding a bit ethereal.
"What are you thinking!"
Eve looked at this somewhat offbeat girl, what are you doing, we're about to be devoured next second, yet you're thinking about dinner. You are supposed to be the future Duchess of Stuart, are these people starving you? How come even at death you're thinking this?
Perhaps affected by Lorenzo, the more life-threatening the moment, the more Eve's train of thought became disjointed, just like that detective who enjoyed performing craniotomies on enemies while telling jokes.
Lorenzo once said that the reason he did this was to lessen the mental erosion by demons. It's like facing an army, a normal person would look up and scream "I'm doomed," then obediently wait for death.
But if you face that army and shout "Have you eaten?", wouldn't the fearsome momentum collapse immediately? Facing an army would no longer evoke fear because that grand momentum had been disrupted by a simple "Have you eaten?"
"Tonight is a dinner, we are the food on the table."
Selyu's icy voice sounded, reflected in her Ice Sea-like eyes was the burning hell. She could always see through everything from angles others couldn't, just like Mrs. Van Rudd wasn't actually fierce, she merely longed for a family to accompany her.
"Are those demons the diners? I sure hope its mother taught it not to play with food."
Eve joined Selyu's nonsense talk, but evidently, the two weren't on the same wavelength.
"No, they're just wild dogs under the table, waiting for the master's food..."
Selyu looked at the sea of fire behind the demons, finally having some emotional fluctuation in her cold voice.
"The real diners have just arrived."
Then the demons all moved aside, and a man slowly walked out with aged white hair, clearly in hell yet wearing a peaceful smile. His skin wrinkled together like dead trees.
Wearing a faded and tattered red robe like dried blood, a bright silver cross hung on his chest, seemingly not having appeared so solemnly in a long time. He seemed somewhat unaccustomed, adjusting his glasses, and finally raised the Nail Sword in his hand.
With his appearance, all the demons retreated completely, invisible pressure enveloped Eve and Selyu, an indescribable feeling. The two involuntarily retreated until they were pressed against the wall, with no way out.
"Demon... Demon Hunter."
Eve said tremblingly, unclear of the man's identity, but she had seen the sword, the same weapon as Lorenzo, coated with Holy Silver.
