GREEN RAGE AND RED RAGE

Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Descent into Obsidian Depths

The newly revealed passage yawned like the mouth of a predator, its blackened walls pulsing faintly with crimson veins. The air grew heavier with each step, the temperature dropping until their breaths misted before them.

Jester rubbed his arms as he followed Luther deeper into the tunnel. "Alright, I'm officially nominating this place as the worst vacation spot in the galaxy. No sunlight, no margaritas, and definitely no friendly locals."

Luther grunted, his glowing green eyes scanning their surroundings. "Focus. The Hive adapts. It knows we're coming."

"That's comforting," Jester muttered, drawing his blades. "You're like a walking mood killer."

---

The tunnel widened abruptly, opening into a cavern lit by an eerie red glow. Massive stalactites hung from the ceiling, dripping with an unknown black substance that hissed as it hit the ground. In the center of the cavern stood a colossal structure that looked like a twisted heart, its pulsating rhythm synchronized with the faint vibrations in the air.

Jester approached cautiously, his eyes narrowing. "Let me guess—that's another control node? Or is it the Hive's actual heart this time?"

Luther shook his head. "Neither. It's a generator. The Hive uses these to power its deeper systems. Destroying it will cripple their defenses, but it won't stop them."

"Great," Jester said, twirling one of his blades. "Another pit stop on our journey to doom."

---

The ground beneath them trembled as a deep, guttural roar echoed through the cavern. From the shadows emerged a massive guardian, its body covered in a combination of organic armor and mechanical plating. Its eyes glowed an unnatural yellow, and it wielded a massive blade that crackled with crimson energy.

Jester stared up at the towering figure, his usual grin faltering. "Well, that's new."

Luther's claws extended, their green glow illuminating the cavern. "It's a sentinel. The Hive's elite defender."

"Of course it is," Jester muttered, readying his stance. "Let's see how tough this one is."

---

The sentinel charged with surprising speed, its blade slicing through the air as it aimed for Luther. He dodged to the side, the blade crashing into the ground and sending a shockwave through the cavern.

Jester darted in, slashing at the sentinel's exposed joints. His strikes barely made a dent in its thick armor, but they drew its attention.

"Over here, big guy!" he taunted, narrowly avoiding a backhand swipe.

The sentinel roared, its blade glowing brighter as it unleashed a horizontal energy wave. Jester flipped backward, landing beside Luther.

"This thing's tougher than it looks," he said, breathing heavily.

---

Luther didn't respond, his focus entirely on the sentinel. With a roar, he charged, his claws glowing with intensified energy. He aimed for the sentinel's exposed chest, driving his claws into the seams of its armor.

The sentinel staggered but retaliated with a powerful strike, sending Luther crashing into a nearby wall.

"Luther!" Jester shouted, throwing one of his blades at the sentinel's head. The blade struck true, embedding itself in the guardian's glowing eye.

The sentinel let out a deafening scream, its movements faltering as it clutched at its face.

"Gotcha," Jester muttered, rushing toward the fallen Luther.

---

Luther rose slowly, his glowing eyes fixed on the sentinel. "Keep it distracted," he growled. "I'll target the core."

"Distract it? Sure, easy job for me," Jester said, rolling his eyes.

He sprinted around the sentinel, dodging its erratic attacks as it swung wildly in an attempt to dislodge the blade from its eye.

"Hey, over here!" Jester shouted, throwing his remaining blade at its leg. The blade pierced the joint, causing the sentinel to stumble.

Luther seized the opportunity, leaping onto its back. His claws tore into the armor, exposing a pulsating core of energy buried deep within.

---

The sentinel thrashed violently, trying to dislodge Luther as he drove his claws deeper into its back. Jester continued to harass it from below, slicing at its legs to keep it off balance.

Finally, with a roar of effort, Luther ripped the core free. The sentinel froze, its glowing eyes dimming as the energy drained from its body.

Jester stepped back as the massive figure collapsed, shaking the ground with its fall.

"Well," he said, catching his breath, "that wasn't so bad."

---

The cavern shuddered, the generator at its center reacting to the sentinel's destruction. The pulsating rhythm grew erratic, and cracks began to form along its surface.

Luther turned toward Jester. "We need to destroy it. Now."

Jester nodded, retrieving his blades. "On it."

Together, they attacked the generator, their combined strikes sending sparks and shards of metal flying. The cracks widened, and a bright light began to pour from within.

"Time to move!" Jester shouted, backing away as the generator emitted a high-pitched whine.

Luther followed, and the two sprinted toward the nearest exit just as the generator exploded. The force of the blast sent a shockwave through the cavern, collapsing the walls and sealing the path behind them.

---

They emerged into another tunnel, the faint red glow of the Hive's influence still visible ahead. Jester leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.

"Alright, can we just agree to never do that again?"

Luther glanced at him, his expression unreadable. "We've only begun."

Jester groaned, sheathing his blades. "Of course we have. Because why would anything ever be easy?"

They pressed on, the weight of their mission growing heavier with each step.
