chapter 48
The two of them followed the footprints, gradually discovering more traces of “delicious” things having been eaten.
But no spiders or other large creatures were in sight—only some spider shells that had been completely consumed.
Just like eating crabs, the spiders’ bodies and internal organs had been hollowed out, leaving only lightweight shells that still carried a putrid smell.
This indicated that the spiders must have been dead for some time, their bodies eaten by something else.
Yang Yi picked up one of the larger shells and obtained information.
[Name: Fire Fluff Spider Monster (Adult)]
[Description: A large spider, carnivorous, with notable social behavior. Hunts large prey collectively. Its body hair provides excellent insulation. Can be used in the Monster Gacha Machine.]
PS: Monster corpses treated as food or materials by players cannot be used in Gacha again.
On one piece of abdominal shell, a cluster of fluffy hair remained.
[Name: Fire Fluff Spider Hair]
[Type: Material]
[Quality: Fine]
[Description: A material with better heat retention than wool or goose down. Can be collected to craft sweaters.]
Yang Yi collected the shells and hair and stored them in his stomach bag. Whether it would become Gacha rewards or a sweater would depend on the Gacha drop rate.
Suna, however, ignored the shells and focused on a footprint on the ground, reaching out to measure it.
“What is it?” Yang Yi asked, walking over.
“Don’t you think this footprint is bigger and deeper than before? And it looks like he isn’t wearing shoes.” Suna placed her hand in the print, carefully feeling it.
Yang Yi observed and frowned.
“Seems like that’s the case…”
He looked back.
They had been following the footprints all the way here; the owner of the prints couldn’t have changed—it was the captain of the Lucky Ship.
Yet his body seemed to have undergone some abnormal, almost impossible transformation.
A normal human body cannot undergo such radical changes in such a short period. That’s a trait reserved for abnormally developing insects.
Like a caterpillar emerging from a cocoon as a butterfly.
But even that isn’t this fast!
So… can the owner of these footprints still be called human?
Yang Yi stared at the footprints, lost in thought. After a while, he said, “Let’s go, let’s see!”
He wanted to figure out exactly what this player had encountered.
Being prepared in advance was better for the future.
After all, he had no way to retreat.
The two continued forward, Yang Yi leading and Suna following closely behind.
Her eyes kept glancing at the chef’s knife at Yang Yi’s waist, her thoughts unreadable.
As they ventured further, they reached the center of the island.
Spider density increased, with shells scattered everywhere, all stripped clean.
The player’s footprints had become extreme—swollen, irregularly round, almost as thick as an elephant’s leg.
And there was no excrement along the way!
“Only eating, not defecating—and after all that, his digestive absorption must be incredible,” Yang Yi marvelled.
After a few hundred meters, Yang Yi suddenly stopped and gestured for Suna to halt.
“Shh!”
He motioned for silence.
Soon, Suna also heard loud gasping and swallowing sounds.
Yang Yi made a hand signal—they had agreed on this method to communicate silently. He would go first.
A few meters ahead, Yang Yi crawled over a bush and finally saw the source of the noise.
[Discovered a disgusting monster; sanity -5]
It was a bloated giant over three meters tall, its body swollen so rapidly that its skin had split, exposing raw flesh and blood.
Its belly had only a translucent membrane, filled ★ 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 ★ with yellowish liquid—either fat or some other substance.
Even from five meters away, Yang Yi smelled the rancid odor of spoiled oil from it.
And this monster could speak.
“Meat… where did you hide all the delicious meat?!”
The creature tore into a nearby Fire Fluff Spider as it spoke.
This spider was a special specimen, its head previously grafted with a dried human segment, now missing—likely eaten by the giant.
After some effort, the giant located the intestines in the spider’s abdomen, squeezed out the undigested food remnants, and stuffed them into its mouth.
These remnants were the uneaten “delicacies,” containing dead spider toxin—lethal to spiders.
The giant didn’t care at all and swallowed everything.
Even after consuming it, it seemed unsatisfied and devoured the entire spider at high speed.
“This human has mutated!” Suna messaged privately.
Seeing no reaction from Yang Yi, she cautiously followed, crouching half a body-length behind him.
“How did he become this kind of monster?” Yang Yi replied in the journal.
Both were using the journal to communicate silently.
“Not sure… dissection would be needed to know, but probably related to the rotten meat you threw in.”
“Then it’s my fault.” Yang Yi smirked.
At the same time, he realized something.
In this world, player death might come in two types.
One is physical death—being killed directly.
The other is mental death.
A player might mutate into a monster for some reason, and at that point, the system recognizes them as dead.
“This giant is huge; probably hard to kill! I’ll fire a big shot and shatter him!” Yang Yi prepared to act.
“No, try to keep him intact! I want to figure out why he mutated!”
Yang Yi thought for a moment and agreed to Suna’s request.
He also wanted to understand the cause of the mutation.
Only by knowing would they not fear the unknown.
The giant finished eating the spider, suddenly raising its head and sniffing the air.
“Crap! He might have found us!” Suna messaged.
Yang Yi didn’t reply—he struck first.
From just over five meters, shooting the pig-sized head of the giant, he wouldn’t miss.
Bang!
The shot hit the giant’s cheek, blowing off half his face.
But the skull was thick; the brain wasn’t hit, only disfiguring him. Both eyeballs were blown out, cheeks torn, teeth exposed.
In standard mode, one shot couldn’t kill this monster.
And now Yang Yi and Suna were exposed!
“Fresh meat~~~!”
The giant howled through its torn mouth and ran toward them, heavy steps shaking the ground.
Losing its eyes didn’t seem to affect it much.
The two quickly retreated, using trees for cover and keeping their distance.
Two poison-coated iron arrows struck the giant’s belly, but had little effect.
The giant rampaged, breaking trees along its path.
If it hit a person, the consequences would be disastrous!
Bang!
Another shot hit the giant’s knee, forcing it to kneel.
It seemed enraged and spat a mouthful of pus at Yang Yi, who dodged it, but the tree behind him took the hit, as if splashed with strong acid—white smoke rose, and the bark peeled away.
“Careful of its yellow liquid!” Suna warned. “It’s probably digestive fluid—arrows get dissolved in it!”
Yang Yi raised an eyebrow; the arrow originally in the giant’s belly had disappeared, fallen to the ground.
The arrowhead was gone, its cross-section smoking.
“Fresh meat!” The giant charged again.
It seemed to have healing abilities; its facial wounds were slowly closing.
Yang Yi didn’t dare relax, running while thinking of a strategy.
Suddenly, the giant stopped moving behind them.
Yang Yi looked back and saw it eating the dirt on the ground.
It was the “delicious poison” Yang Yi had thrown onto the island.
The giant seemed crazed by flavor! It didn’t care what it ate—even dirt.
Yang Yi’s eyes lit up with an idea. He drew the delicious chef’s knife and sliced a nearby tree.
The tree immediately emitted a sweet fragrance.
The giant, detecting the scent, went berserk, ran toward the tree, and began devouring it frantically.
