Chapter 182
Even if you followed him across the world to train, it would be far better than remaining in Sun Moon City forever.
Eunice took a deep breath and drew a bronze mirror from her storage ring. The reflection shimmered faintly as she smoothed her long hair and adjusted the ornament at her temple. Her heart raced despite her calm expression—there was a rare chance here, and she knew it.
After making certain every strand was in place and her confidence restored, she walked toward the quiet figure beneath the tree.
Ethan was still resting there, his arms folded loosely, his expression unreadable beneath the mask. The crowd parted silently around Eunice as she approached him.
He looked up slightly as she neared—the girl from the Stormjade family. Her delicate face and restrained aura spoke of someone with noble upbringing and higher standing than most of the city's cultivators.
Eunice bowed gracefully, her movements trained and elegant.
"Mr. Aether, do you have a moment to speak with me?"
Ethan's tone was faint but direct. "Who are you?"
"The little girl's name is Eunice," she replied softly. "daughter of the Stormjade family."
"I see," Ethan said indifferently. "But I don't have free time to chat."
His rejection was calm, distant, and left no room for negotiation.
A flicker of surprise crossed Eunice's eyes.
She had thought herself not inferior to the woman who had earlier stolen every onlooker's breath—Seraphina—but at the very least, she was the envy of Sun Moon City's noble daughters. Many young cultivators of high birth had courted her, yet this man brushed her aside as though she were no one.
It stung—not deeply, but sharply enough to kindle something new in her heart.
Still, she refused to yield.
"In that case," she said softly, raising her eyes to meet his, "perhaps I can offer something more valuable than conversation. Young Master Aether must have come here for Sun Moon Lake. I may have information that could interest you."
At that, Ethan's gaze sharpened slightly. He did not speak, but the hint of curiosity in his eyes was clear.
Eunice caught it immediately and smiled faintly. "There is no need to rush," she said with poise.
"There are too many people here, and you still have challenges ahead. It isn't suitable to discuss such matters publicly. Tonight, I will await you at the Drunken Fragrance Pavilion, third-floor private room."
Ethan thought for a moment and nodded slightly. "Fine."
"Then, Mr. Aether, I shall take my leave first. See you tonight."
Eunice bowed again, her gaze poised, then turned and walked away.
The mantle of awe surrounding Ethan lingered long after her departure. But soon the square returned to motion—the next wave of competitors taking the stage, the aroma of burning incense mixing with the rising tension of battle.
Challengers one after another stepped forward to test their strength, but all avoided Luna Stormjade's platform. None wished to court disaster after witnessing what Aether had done.
Even those eager for glory knew the limits of courage. The name "Aether" would spread by nightfall.
An hour passed.
The Emberveil and Silkrain elders continued their matches, yet Luna's arena remained vacant. The crowd murmured, and whispers travelled quickly across the square—
"Looks like Stormjade's slot truly belongs to Aether now."
"Who would challenge Elder Luna after that display?"
But not everyone agreed.
Seated near the Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets delegation, Luke slowly opened his eyes. He had sat in profound silence for half an hour, his presence barely perceptible.
At Oswin's quiet command—"Go."—he rose.
Luke gave a single sharp nod. With a clean motion, he leapt high into the air, robes fluttering, and landed neatly on the empty platform. The murmurs in the crowd ceased at once.
He strode to the bone-age stone with unhurried confidence. Placing his hand upon it, a faint light shimmered, then cleared.
The device accepted him easily. The secret method he used to mask his age and suppress his energy worked flawlessly—as expected from someone of the Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets.
Hands tucked behind his back, Luke looked toward the Stormjade family stand and said calmly, his tone like steady steel, "Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets—Luke. I challenge Elder Luna Stormjade."
The declaration hung in the air like thunder.
Gasps erupted.
"Did he just say... Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets?"
"That organization has never participated in Sun Moon City's arena before!"
"Everyone knows their influence extends beyond cities and sects. Their foundation is unfathomable. What is this Luke planning?"
"I think he's not just after the quota," someone whispered. "He's here for Aether."
Indeed, all eyes turned toward Ethan. Though he didn't move, many saw it too clearly—an unspoken connection between the masked stranger and the challenger from one of the continent's most mysterious factions.
From the Stormjade family's seats, elders exchanged wary glances.
The Pavillion of Heavenly Secrets' presence in a local competition was unheard of. Their authority rivaled that of entire sects. That they would lower themselves to compete here… something didn't fit.
"Father, why would Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets suddenly join this challenge?" Eunice asked quietly.
Adam Stormjade's brows drew together. "...I don't know," he admitted. "But they chose us. That means something."
After a moment's thought, his eyes flickered as realization dawned. "No… perhaps I do know why."
"Why?"
"If Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets wanted a Sun Moon Lake quota, they could simply ask. The families would surrender one without protest. There's no reason to send an elder or disciple to fight."
His gaze lifted briefly to Luke, then shifted toward Ethan resting under the tree. "Their goal isn't the quota."
Eunice's expression froze. "Then…"
"It's him," Adam said quietly. "They're after Aether."
The theory sent a ripple through the Stormjade retainers around them. It made too much sense. Over the years, the Pavilion had never bothered with trivial city affairs. Yet now, they arrived precisely when a nameless cultivator defeated Luna. That timing was no coincidence.
Eunice clenched her fists beneath her sleeves, her heart twisting with unease. She had seen this as her one opportunity—the moment to change her future—and now, perhaps even that hope would vanish before it began.
On the stage, Luna adjusted her robes and exhaled deeply. Her internal injuries had mostly stabilized. Just as she took a step forward toward the platform, her family head's voice halted her.
"Think before you act."
She froze mid-step, then turned and gave a small nod.
"Understood." Luna bowed slightly, then straightened her back, her eyes briefly flicking to Luke and then toward the man beneath the tree—Aether.
