Chapter 173
"Before the opening of Sun Moon Lake, the three major families jointly hold a competition," Ava explained as she flipped through the pages of a book on the desk.
"Each family gets 2 slots and the contestants are the best of the younger generations from each family. Whoever wins first place secures an extra spot."
Ethan listened intently, absorbing the information while observing the calm precision with which Ava continued.
"So how are the other three places won?" Ethan asked, his interest piqued.
Ava's eyes brightened as she looked up. "There is a competition arena in the city center. Each of the three families appoints an elder who has reached the Tribulation Transcendence realm."
She paused, then continued, "During the contest, the Elders suppresses their cultivation level, lowering it to match that of the challenger. The challenger must hold their ground until the half of the incense held by the elder burns out"
Ethan nodded at the explanation.
"If multiple challengers complete this trial, they then face off against each other, and the winner claims the spot," Ava finished.
"Thank you," Ethan said, then inquired carefully, "By the way, how strong are these three families of Sun Moon Lake?"
Upon hearing his question, Ava's expression altered subtly; her eyes sharpened with cautious calculation.
"That information doesn't come free," she said softly.
Ethan swiftly produced two top-grade spiritual crystals from his pouch.
"Barely enough," Ava admitted as she took them and retrieved a jade slip from behind the counter.
"It's all inside here," she said, handing the jade slip to Ethan.
Accepting it, Ethan tucked the jade slip away with a slight nod before adding quietly, "I want to purchase more intelligence."
"Which information?" Ava asked, tilting her head.
"About the Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets," Ethan replied calmly, his voice low.
Ava blinked, temporarily speechless. "You don't even know about our Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets?" she asked, incredulous.
"This info is free," she went on, curling the corners of her mouth into a smirk.
"Our Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets spreads throughout Oceanreach, with more than a dozen locations in the Skyreach Territory alone. Sun Moon City's Pavilion is just one among many."
"That's all I can tell you; you should understand," she added with a hint of pride.
Ethan inclined his head politely. "I understand. Farewell."
This Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets, like the Myriad Treasures Pavilion, was vast and cloaked in mystery and power. Beyond the numerous branches scattered across the Skyreach Territory, even Sun Moon City was protected by formidable Mahayana experts, their strength enough to ensure no outsiders dared challenge them.
Its true might likely surpassed even the Holy Land of Endless Mountains.
.....
No sooner had Ethan left than a middle-aged man stepped up behind Ava.
The man's eyes flicked toward the direction Ethan had departed, his expression unusually grave and focused.
"Mr. Oswin, why did you come out?" Ava asked, her surprise evident.
"Do you know the name of that person just now?" Oswin demanded, his voice low.
"Aether. Just a casual cultivator," Ava responded.
"A casual cultivator, yet I cannot see through his realm," Oswin murmured with an edge of disbelief.
"What?!" Ava gasped.
"He likely practices some secret method to conceal his cultivation. His strength should be considerable; he may even be a Mahayana realm expert… at least at the peak Tribulation Transcendence realm," Oswin theorized grimly.
"No wonder I couldn't detect any spiritual fluctuations from him," Ava whispered.
"If you can't realize this, my centuries of training must be in vain," Oswin said with a bitter smile.
Ava lowered her voice suddenly. "Mr. Oswin, after Aether's inquiries about Sun Moon Lake, did he realize the lake isn't simple?"
Oswin's face stiffened. "It took the Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets over thirty years to uncover the true nature of Sun Moon Lake. I doubt a newcomer like Aether could pierce its mysteries on his first visit."
"You say his realm is high. If he truly were a strong Mahayana expert, why come to Sun Moon Lake? Its effects benefit less to strong cultivators, and more to especially those below the Mahayana realm."
"His behavior and motives raise questions," Ava added thoughtfully.
"In that case, to be cautious, we must fight hard to secure Sun Moon Lake's training quota this cycle," Oswin decided firmly.
Ava nodded. "Who should go?"
"The ordinary cultivator Aether is beyond our reach. Let Luke go."
"Luke is a pure physical cultivator, already halfway to Nirvana," Oswin explained. "He follows a secret method to mask his strength, and most cannot perceive his true power."
"Keep a close eye on Aether. If he uncovers the secrets of Sun Moon Lake and tries to seize its treasures, we will confine him there for life."
Oswin's tone was cold, dismissive of the idea of eliminating such a formidable opponent.
.....
Back at the inn, Ethan settled into his room to examine the jade slip he had purchased.
Words rose like spectral whispers from the jade.
They detailed the three major families of Sun Moon City: the Emberveil family, the Silkrain family, and the Stormjade family.
The Stormjade family had recently risen in prominence, regarded as the head among the three, possessing three of the ten spots in Sun Moon Lake.
Each family commanded three Mahayana realm experts, guardians of their influence.
Most notable was the Stormjade family's ancestor, a cultivator at the fifth turn Mahayana realm, though reclusive for many years.
Pavilion of Heavenly Secrets' records hinted he was suspected of breaking through to the sixth turn Mahayana realm.
Ethan's fingers crushed the jade slip slowly.
"The three families share nine Mahayana experts—two at the fourth turn, one rumored to be sixth turn. Forcing entry into Sun Moon Lake seems futile; best to honestly claim a spot in the competition," he concluded.
.....
Five days later, outside Sun Moon City, a vast colossal bird cut through the sky.
Its glossy silver wings reflected the sun like sharpened steel, fur glinting brightly. Piercing dark red pupils glimmered with rare intelligence and power.
Seventeen figures sat astride its broad back, chatting quietly.
"The city ahead must be Sun Moon City. A large formation is there, enabling teleportation directly to Noble Sun City," a white-robed man said with anticipation.
"Is it finally here?" a woman whispered, eyes fluttering open.
This was none other than Seraphina.
