Chapter 8: #8 - War(1)
The rest of the day was spent searching for my team, sure, I didn't like them, but there was an imminent war over us, so I needed them, even if it was just to pose as my teammates.
I never found them, not even at the usual barracks that the military used. Because of that, I was left with no other option but to turn invisible and steal some fruits from the communal diner.
Turning invisible was easier than I thought, I mean, It was the first thing I had done in this world, but it still surprised me how easily I had done it. Primarily, because of the control essence.
It's way more useful than I thought, with it, I wouldn't need to train in various disciplines once I get certain characters. No training to control my Ki, chakra, reiatsu, nen, and many other power systems.
I love it.
What I don't love is waking up early in the morning the next day, just to go to war. I mean, I don't need to fight against the drowsiness or anything like that, but still, a bother.
Not only that, but someone was standing in front of us, giving us a motivational speech about the war and all that.
"We will triumph over..." The leader of this batch of soldiers was screaming to all 24 of us in here.
My team, which, counting me, was six people.
The other three teams had six members each.
The leader of the squad was the Prefect from the first group, and I'm pretty sure the reason why he's screaming so much is because he wants to believe what he's saying too.
As he ended, he went back to his position and we all marched to the entrance of the city, which was bustling with people, all clad in armor.
We climbed up in our horses and stood outside the city.
The morning sun was visible through the mountain, reminding me of everything I've done in the past three days.
Our squad stood facing the entrance next to various others as an old man stood in the walls of the city and began to scream.
"Soldiers!" He began, his body was surrounded with faint whispers of magic and I knew he was using it to amplify his voice.
Spartan soldiers were already very disciplined, so there wasn't any idle chatter in the multitude, but the sudden scream made everyone focus on the man.
Once again, I had to hear a motivational speech that talked about the greatness of our forces, and how weak our enemies, the barbarians, were.
Now, that I think about it, Who is the barbarian king?
The one who killed Kratos isn't yet in power, right? At least he shouldn't be, then, is it his father?
The old man finished his speech and all of the soldiers screamed ¨FOR SPARTA!¨ and raised their spears, I was no different.
At the next moment, we all began separating, but instead of going straight for the forest path, we bordered the city to the right and started marching silently.
High in the walls of the city, many people were cheering for us, mostly women and the elderly, as the children were probably training right now.
The trail continued past the city and we marched through the path that was to the side of the mountain.
There were at least 5000 of us in here and the whole brigade divided us into groups of five, with a leader going first, this leader looked older than his soldiers, and I could see faint traces of magic in his body.
So he's a mage. And all of the other leaders will be too, probably.
Considering that they will also fight, then we most likely have to face mages too.
Which is bullshit, since no soldier in here knows how to handle magic. Maybe at the basic level that is reinforcing yourself to hit harder and endure more. But that's it. Hell, if you think about it, 5000 foot soldiers aren't enough to do anything in a battle. Especially in a magical world. Furthermore, we don't know how the barbarians use spells, they may just throw mana at us, reinforce themselves, do group attacks...
They're not dumb enough to throw us into battle like this, right?
No, they aren't, so there's something I'm not aware of...
"Soldiers!" The leader in the third batch climbed to a rock above us.
For reference, I'm part of the fourth batch, around the middle.
"Soon, we will be entering the plains around the megalopolis, our intelligence suggests that's where our enemies will be stationed" The words hyped up the crowd "To not be discovered, each squad will use their knowledge of stealth and position themselves around the east side of the plains"
His words visibly annoyed the army, as most of them were expecting to bash in running with their spears pointed to the front, and somehow that resulted in victory.
By the way, why are we fighting around a megalopolis? I don't remember what that was, but going by the name, it should be a city, right? It shouldn't be allied with the barbarians.
As the third leader said, soon the path became wider and we separated from each other. The imponent army of 5000 was slowly reduced to groups of less than 50.
The one I was in was composed of 12 people, my team and one other.
As we went down the path, the ¨plain¨ became visible to my sight.
Some couple of kilometers, a ¨plain¨ of pure and untainted green expanded in all directions, going up the mountain and settling there. In the ground, the fauna had expanded wildly, proof that there wasn't any kind of human civilization here.
The trees were way bigger than they had any right to be, and by a rough estimate, I could say they were at least 100 meters each. Not only were they tall, but wide too, their bark was meters in radius and their branches were big enough to stand comfortably in them. Although, they were hidden by the leaves.
While a bother to travel by, they proved perfect to hide in between. There were too many trees for this to be called a plain. Perhaps it grew recently?
The forest was shrouded in deep darkness, as the trees were completely blocking out the light from the sun that was up and shining in the sky.
Playing with my thoughts, the path finally stopped being rocky and the trees welcomed us to go inside the terrain. We left the horses and we traveled through the small openings that we found
As we went inside, everyone crouched and kept their equipment close to their bodies, I positioned myself last and opened my inventory. I took the spider armor and threw it inside my spartan armor, I felt it attach to my body and I got more relaxed.
Strangely enough, we were able to pass unnoticed, and it wasn't until 10 minutes in, that we heard the small sound of metal against another.
We all looked at each other and got ready for battle. I reinforced my body with magic.
As we advanced, I saw a flash of light in the corner of my eye. So vaguely and small that it merged with the sunlight and I almost missed it. Almost.
"That-" I tried to warn, but my spider sense flared wildly and I jumped as hard as I could, sticking myself to one of the various trees.
Just in time for an explosion to vaporize my teammates.
"Just great"
...
As several explosions were heard in the plains, the words "Confirmed hit" were repeated multiple times in a certain part of the battlefield, hidden from common eyes.
One of the barbarians, visibly in command, started ordering his warriors.
"Rotate, they must be in disarray with so many explosions" His squad of soldiers obeyed quickly, and soon enough, others were taking their place to set on more explosions.
"Begin the second impact" The leader of the soldiers said
This scene is repeated across the multiple hideouts of the barbarians.
Unknown to the Spartans in the battle, only the slaves were on the ground, those whose lives weren't important enough to not be sacrificed.
"Confirmed hit"
Once again, the battlefield lightened up and several explosions flashed in between the trees.
"How are the mages?" A leader asked his soldiers.
"In recovery" He was answered.
"Once they recover enough, make them attack again, then we will go down and finish any other who wants to oppose us" The leader gave his orders.
"Very well" And the soldiers followed.
Every leader ordered the same thing, just as they had planned, and the soldiers who weren't proficient enough remained hidden among the leaves, waiting for their moment of glory as the mages sat down and recovered their mana.
Unbeknownst to them, there was a soldier who didn't die in the explosions who will ruin their whole plan.
...
My complaints were followed by a series of explosions that I could hear across the entire battlefield. No doubt, killing the majority of Spartans.
And once those ended, the second volley started, I, who was stuck to the bark of a tall tree was far from the range of explosions, but being far up let me see as my Spartan comrades fell in battle, not a body left.
The ones who were unlucky enough to survive were left in astonishment that soon enough gave way to fear and sadness.
Our army was basically destroyed, and the only ones who I had trust in surviving were the 5 leaders who knew how to use magic, but even then, my faith waivered with every second of silence that passed in battle.
As our army fell in despair, I, on the other hand, was feeling complicated.
"They are not my people, they are not my friends, they are not my country, hell, this isn't even my world..." I told to myself.
"But then... Why do I feel so angry?"
I have never cared for my motherland, I was American in part of my father and Russian in part of my mother, both countries were plagued by mistakes, errors, and idiots, so it's no surprise that I never felt inclined toward one or other.
"So, once again, Why do I feel so angry?"
This is the first time I have felt this, a different anger than someone attacking me, attacking someone I care for, or doing something along those lines.
This anger... Was the patriotic kind, no doubt coming from the last vestiges of memories that Kratos left me. I didn't want this anger, I had to liberate it in some other way.
And I knew how.
The anger in me was only surpassed by my pragmatic side which was thinking about how could our enemies do such a thing.
"Air? No, the normal mana that they have access to would run out"
"Suicidal attack? No, I saw a flash of light coming, that was the attack"
"Item bombarding? No, it wasn't any sort of object, the streaks were magical"
"Then, what-" I looked up, and I figured it out.
The trees.
The trees, whose branches were big enough to stand in, whose leaves were dense enough to hide whatever was in those branches, who were tall enough to have a good position to snipe anything in the battle.
The trees, those who hide my enemies.
Without wasting time, I took my grimoire and the toy soldier out of my inventory, my only two means of attack, stepped in the bark of the tree, and started running on it, without forgetting to augment my capabilities with my Greek divinity.
As I ran, I summoned various mirrors that kept floating alongside me.
My steps did a lot of sound and I alerted my enemies of my presence.
They looked down and saw a spartan soldier covered in red, gold, and black armor, a book and mirrors floating at his side and holding some sort of item in his hands.
"The enemy!" The only one who saw me screamed, alerting everyone who didn't.
"Quick, send the signal!" I heard.
Should I let them do that?
I finally arrived at the end of the bark and I jumped to one of the branches that didn't have anything, even if they had placed planks to travel between branches, they looked too fragile to fall in.
As soon as I stepped in the branch, many arrows came at me, of course, every single one being dodged.
Knowing what to do with my anger, I warned them "Ready?"
"Attack!" One visibly better dressed than the others ordered the soldiers as he started knocking another arrow.
Three soldiers jumped from their spot and extended their blades.
"Mirror Magic: Reflect Ray"
Just like that, half of their bodies fell to my feet, while the other half fell to the ground below the tree.
"Triple kill" I know that I should be scared, angry, or feeling anything else but satisfaction at the notion of killing, but the adrenaline from running upwards a 100-meter tree numbed my emotions.
"Send the message, there's a mage!" Someone screamed, and I saw him hit slightly someone who was looking outwards up and placing their hands together.
"Oh no, You don'-" My sense warned me of arrows coming to me, but I just jumped upwards, took aim, and shot the ones that sent them.
"This should progress the Roland and Jason assimilations" I said, knowing that no one would understand me.
"Attack him, protect our mages!" The leader, one of the many who sent an arrow to me ordered.
They got in formation the best way they could in this shaky terrain and went towards me.
Behind them and the leader, 9 mages were charging an attack together, and one who was charging enough mana for the signal.
"The bat signal..." I said the first thing that came out of my mind.
The formation of twelve spears pointed to me advanced slowly and I couldn't care less about it.
"Mirror Magic..." Various mirrors were summoned around their formation "...Reflect Refrain."
The mirrors fired lasers that vaporized the soldiers, and the few who weren't were either killed by the reflection of the lasers or fell to their deaths.
As the lasers were in full effect, an arrow flew to me but before it hit me, I grabbed it with my hand.
"What!?" The leader said.
But before I could shoot him, he was hit by an attack from behind him.
"Internal fight?" I thought he was betrayed, but that wasn't the case.
He was hit by the huge mass of mana that the 9 mages behind him conjured up, the mana didn't care about him and consumed him easily.
It went straight for me, slowly but surely.
"Lame"
Summoning a mirror behind where the leader stood, I teleported there and the mana hit the top of the tree, destroying it almost completely.
"Shit" "Oh no" "God..." These were the only reactions I got, the six other mages who completed the spell were sprawled on the ground and couldn't move to save their lives. Literally.
"Pew Pew" was all I said before doing said action.
"Unfortunately, I wasn't fast enough to prevent the lone mage who sensed all his friends getting killed from sending the signal alerting that their whole squad was down." I narrated to the mage, who was laser-focused on making the magical signal and didn't mind the tears flowing down his eyes.
"Or was I?" I spooked him, knowing him this would make him work faster.
Soon enough, the mage shot up a magical beam that seemed like smoke and had a slightly red color hue to it.
"Relieved, the mage fell to his back and thought that he would be avenged by his many comrades in arms, little did he know that no Barbarian flesh shall be spared today" He couldn't even turn his head to look at me, as I pointed my rifle to him.
Just as I did, I felt a small click in my being, like something had perfectly fit inside me.
Suspecting what it was I looked upon my Gacha.
[Status - 3/3]
[Name: Arian Wolkoff/Kratos]
[Race: Human(Demigod)]
[Assimilations: ]
-Jason Todd
[Assimilation Process:]
-Roland Deschain - 48%
-Peter Parker - 67%
[Progress Bar : 48%]
Inheriting his memories through dreams, killing people, fighting recklessly, shooting things... Yep, things that Jason would a hundred percent do.
What's up with my name, though? And with the progress bar? Didn't I say that I wanted to be notified of its progress?
[You were, but they were overshadowed as you kept on piling more ¨Achievements¨ and showing them could have been a problem in your situation]
"Aww~ So care-" My spider sense flared wildly and I threw myself off the tree in instinct.
Following my fall, a magic beam hit the top of the tree making it blow up.
"First things first, I guess" I said.
"Let me not waste any time though, I said as I summoned the Nathan Drake card and started assimilating it" I narrated, knowing there was no one hearing me.
As I fell, I summoned mirrors in my path to the next biggest tree there was.
[Assimilation Process:]
-Roland Deschain - 48%
-Peter Parker - 67%
-Nathan Drake - 70%
[Progress Bar: 48%]
70% Already? Well, I'm superior to him in marksmanship, physical prowess, and probably experience, so the only thing he could realistically give me is his luck. Which, considering it only worked for missing bullets, it won't be so useful.
Teleporting through my mirrors, I saw various small lasers coming to kill me.
"I see, a big AOE didn't work so they are trying more specific attacks, should I expect them to track me?" I wondered to myself as if there wasn't any danger to me because there really wasn't.
I turned on my helmet and it detected various masses of energy coming to me. I tried to use my telekinesis to fly, but that wasn't possible so I had to teleport from mirror to mirror.
Until I reached another tree, where the life signals were all together.
"Here's Johnny!" I said enthusiastically.
"Open fire!" Was their answer.
This time I didn't stop for them to get their shit together, I took advantage of the mages being tired from bombarding everything and shot them with the toy soldier.
I rushed in wildly, knowing that anything they could throw at me was impossible to harm me.
"Is this the part when I say ¨Oh, how wrong I was?¨ because damn, if I need to jinx it that way for a challenge to appear, then I don't think this war was worth fighting" It took less than a minute to kill all of them, the adrenaline was dying down and my mind was starting to set in
Just as I complained about that, I heard three other explosions come from the other side and I saw five humanoid figures with the Spartan armor climbing and fighting in another tree.
"Oh yeah, I had teammates...Still, they don't seem to be useful" I was bothered by it.
Why had Spider-sense been flaring? For this only? It shouldn't have...
As my excitement began to die down and my mind began to come back, my spider sense warned me of a shot coming to my head. I dodged and turned to look at it.
"Oh... Would you look at that?" I said to myself.
In front of me, I saw various Barbarians riding in winged animals that looked to be some kind of lion with eagle parts.
"Open fire!" One of them screamed as the others took their bows and charged their arrows with shining energy.
"Ah, this must be the reason why it flared so much"
Anything that I did before can't be considered a fight, now we truly are starting.

A/N: Hey there.
If you guys haven't noticed yet, MC gets a bit nervous during situations with high stress. Or when he has intense feelings. Or when he gets out of his comfort zone. In other words, he's a teenager who barely knows what he's doing and starts imitating others when the situation demands it.
Probably shouldn't explain more, I'll just let the MC do the actions by himself.
No more to say, I hope you enjoyed the chapter, and bye bye.
