Chapter 5: #5 - Tests
The streets of the city went through its entirety, much like a modern city's.
Walking from my house to the entrance of the city was a 10-minute endeavor, I don't know if I live close to the entrance or the city is small.
Probably the latter, since I saw that the city extended itself through the mountain.
I don't need to wonder about this though when I get out of the city I will see the mountain too.
What I do wonder about is the stares that everyone's giving me….
This is awkward…
Both the men and the women are giving me several looks, if it was any other day then I wouldn't mind, but I'm assimilating 2 guys with secret identities, so maybe I'm a bit abrasive towards the small stares that I'm getting.
The men are sizing me up, it looks like they are testing if they can take me in a fight, some kids stare at me with wonder in their eyes.
While the women stare at me and the muscles that fortunately are hidden under my robes. Naturally, I know the intent behind those stares, and it makes me a bit uncomfortable.
Not uncomfortable in the truest of senses, but it makes me feel nervous.
A bit self-conscious of myself.
I'm truly displaying my status as a virgin, am I not?
Whatever, that's a problem for future me if it even is a problem.
No, I'm not getting defensive.
The gate stands beside me, it's one massive circle that divides itself in two, and it's open at almost every moment that I see it. I'd suppose that it would be inefficient to have it open individually for everyone who wants to go out of the city.
There are two guards at the door, but they don't react to me.
And just like that, I was out of the city.
The path ahead was one-sided until it became a forest trail. Past the forest, there were several other paths that I didn't know where they went, but I had used one of them to get back from battle yesterday.
I didn't get to that point though, I only reached around the middle of the forest trail and turned to my right, leaving the path and going inside the forest.
While I did so, I tried to test my body through the trees.
I jumped, and in an impossible leap, I reached a branch huge enough for me to land in on and stood in on it.
My body took this action completely naturally, with no sweat, no incredible strain, and no awkwardness that would come from the sudden land. Even my posture was impeccable as I kneeled, supporting my whole weight on my left foot.
Acrobatics checked, but that may come from any of the three…
Testing something, I press my hand against the side of the tree and try to take it out.
It gets unattached, but not without having slight difficulty before it.
With a little more trust in my abilities, I do the same action and let myself fall from the tree.
My hand supports me, and suddenly, I'm attached to the tree.
Throwing aside my sandals, I place my remaining hand on the tree and stick it too.
In no time I find myself crawling through the tree, uncomfortably, since it's a small tree, but I'm crawling in a wall.
I'm literally Spider-Man.
He was one of my favorite superheroes when I was a kid.
I think I'm going to say something.
"Hell yeah" Is what ends up coming out of my mouth.
After having some fun, I kept on going to the right of the trail and I stopped when I reached a place where there were fewer trees than in the forest.
A plain with maybe three trees in its whole 300 meters.
"Alright, I should probably start with examining my body" Know thyself, right?
I punch forward.
A simple punch, but as I repeated my action, my body became more used to it, and it wasn't even 5 minutes before I was doing whole-body combos to the air.
Sometimes, my hands went reflectively to some parts of my body, where they tried to take some sort of weapon, when they found none, they didn't let it stop them and quickly returned to non-armed combat.
Judging by the posture of my hands, these weapons varied mostly, but I saw them in a simple gun motion most of the time. Simple guns as in Glock pistols or revolvers.
"Well, let's do what I've come to do" Stopping my punches, I noticed that I barely sweated.
Huh, neat.
[Status - 3/3]
[Name: Arian Wolkoff]
[Race: Human(Demigod)]
[Assimilations: None]
[Assimilation Process:]
-Jason Todd -63%
-Roland Deschain - 29%
-Peter Parker - 46%
[Progress Bar : 0%]
Did it go up? I'm not sure but I think it did… What things can I do to speed up this process? I did things that they would do just now, so maybe that was it.
Or am I arriving too fast to conclusions? Hmm, those thoughts were surprisingly quick… Maybe because I'm assimilating pragmatic people who deduce causes everywhere. Yeah, that must be it.
Anyway, this wasn't what I wanted to check.
[Inventory]
I've already started with the Spiderman theme, I may as well follow it, right?
Laying in my inventory, I saw various things, but only one of them captured my attention. The Iron Spider suit.
My favorite suit since I saw it in a cartoon, I love the Spider-Legs the most.
Opening up the card, I see that it's the MCU's design for the armor, that's good, it's the one with nanotech.
Not only that, I noticed that the image has some… signs at the right border of it, and it looks like a small arrow that points to the right.
I touch it, and the image gets swiped in that direction, now it shows a small cylinder that looks slightly technological.
"Maybe it's the port or the compressed version of the armor" I conclude, I remember that in Infinity War, the rocket hits Peter in the chest and the armor expands from there.
Not needing any other inspections, I summoned the armor, and as expected, there was a small circular device in my hand.
I press it against my chest and feel it enveloping me completely.
"Whoa, it does smell like a new car in here" I'm a sucker for references, sue me.
The HUD makes it look like I'm playing a video game in first person, but everything is good, I don't feel stronger or anything but I assume it's because I need to test it.
"Is there someone there?" I ask a rhetorical question since there should be someone there, or well, something.
But to my surprise, no one answered.
"Suit's AI?" Once again, I'm met with silence.
"Why doesn't the suit have an AI?" I groan.
I was hoping to get a crash course in the uses of the suit, but why is there no AI?
The first couple of movies showed that Peter had Karen, an AI, to aid him as he was getting used to-
Ah.
Yes.
Aid him, so it was to be removed when he became proficient in using his suit.
And this suit is something that Stark gave him because he was already proficient.
And in Infinity War, it's JARVIS or FRIDAY who activates the parachute in Peter's suit, not an inbuilt AI.
"Haah... Well, you can't win everything" A small sigh escapes my mouth.
"Oh well, I'll just need to figure it out; Does this use batteries? Voice commands?"
[Any item coming from the gacha won't run out of fuel, but it won't be usable for any other purposes than powering up the item] The answer to the first question came from the gacha itself.
"Cool. Spider legs" I nodded and then ordered the suit.
My back became slightly heavier and felt something similar to tentacles coming out from there.
Two sharp tips appeared from the top of my vision and two similar tips appeared in the lower parts of it too.
"This is pretty cool too…"
I couldn't figure out anything else from the suit apart from the legs, just that I can't shoot webs. I mean, a small panel popped up on my right wrist when I was messing around, but it only displayed the status of my suit and connected devices.
Actually, this gives me an idea…
I should inspect the other things though.
…
"Doesn't work…"
Bummed out, I took the gloves from my hands.
These are Roy Mustang's gloves from Fullmetal Alchemist, but they only act as a bridge between the start and the result.
The result is Fire transmutation, but to start I need to know the inherent structure, properties, molecular makeup, etc, of a particular material.
I remember this clearly. Because I really loved the power system of that anime.
Nen is also good, Stands, Abilities from A Certain Magical Index, Magi…
I liked those animes, I should visit them, I don't think they are low-level though.
Next is the weapon. Meat skewer.
I summon the rapier.
My hands feel a bit unfamiliar with this weapon, but after a moment I'm using it efficiently.
"I can't use this though" There are some reasons for this.
First, Spartans only use spears and shields, at least low-level soldiers do.
Second, I don't need it, the range is shorter than the spider legs, the damage is less, and yes, it's more inconspicuous, but I don't need it at the end.
I'll leave it in my inventory.
Next, the Toy Soldier.
The gun appears in my hand, already in gun shape.
According to my understanding of the weapon(I saw it in the anime), it can be disassembled into a suitcase, right?
I point it to the tree.
A tiny noise comes out of the barrel and the bullet is fired towards the tree, making a hole in it.
Immediately I notice the difference between a normal gun and this one.
No recoil, no wind interference, no shock or loud sound from the gunshot.
"Damn, I had forgotten about it, but that verse is really advanced" And it really is.
I've changed my mind, fuck the setting, I'm using this in the battle.
Just as I was about to leave it in my inventory again, it slightly touched my arm and it got infected by my armor.
The pure black rifle is now sporting some slight designs of red, blue, and gold in it.
"Huh, neat" I touch my right wrist, there a panel appears, describing everything about the gun and how it improved it.
Once again, I tested the Toy soldier and the results were better. I think, I wouldn't be able to notice since I didn't have too much evidence to compare it to, but if it says it's better, then it's better.
…
Throwing the small object in my hand, nothing happens.
"I should've expected it" I resign.
In the ground lay a small open capsule with some designs in it.
The Dragon Ball capsule that I got from the gacha wasn't useful at all, as there was nothing inside it.
My armor doesn't react to it either, making me wonder why it reacted to the toy soldier in the first place. Maybe because they use some sort of network, or have some way of getting hacked.
The capsule works completely by itself though, so no luck there.
"Next"
…
I stare at the next object in my hands.
"No, I won't fall for temptation"
But I really am tempted.
What I'm holding is the stone mask.
Vampirism is good in Jojo's, but I don't want to become a half-god-half-vampire abomination, or worse, lose my godhood for vampirism, Jojo's vampirism out of all things.
"There's no problem with the sun…" I can just use the Iron Spider suit in full mask and problem solved.
But I remember that there are some themes in Jojo about how vampirism changes you, it makes you more evil.
I don't want a personality change just for some regeneration powers.
Regeneration won't be necessary if I don't get hit.
It's as simple as that.
…
"Pretty neat…" The shining book hovers in mid-air in front of me.
The text is weird and almost unreadable, but if I look at it in its whole essence, there's some whisper in my mind telling me what I can use this page for.
There isn't a page for the basic mirror summons, but I can do it easily.
As most powers and items that I have, they work with will.
No words are needed as a mirror appears some meters in front of me.
I see my full body in it.
"Wasn't Kratos brown-skinned before he killed his family?" I just remembered this, but it doesn't matter much anyway.
"And what's that in my left brow?" A small scar cut through my brow, barely noticeable. Same as before, it didn't matter.
"Testing, testing" I warn no one and move the mirror up some distance.
"Mirror Magic: Ray" Using the mirror, a ray is shot up towards the clouds and travels several meters before dispersing.
"That looks strong…" And it's just the first spell of the book.
Passing through its pages, I see some other spells.
"Large Reflect Ray" A mirror appears some meters to the side of the first one, but this one is way bigger.
The normal mirror was bigger than my head, but the large mirror was as big as half my body. The same applies to the ray shot out of it.
"Let me clear this up for a moment…"
I unsummoned every mirror and summoned five mirrors in a line, each one with a space of 1 meter between them.
"Next one is… Real Double" In front of one of the mirrors, a clone appears.
"Whoa"
"Yeah, whoa" He answers back.
"Hmm, this is peculiar… Can you use the grimoire?" I ask him, making time to think about my questions.
"Let me see, Mirror Magic: Reflect Ray." The clone summons his own mirror, which is slightly darker in color, and points it upwards before it fires a ray.
"It works properly, but it consumes my mana, so I can't use it too much else I despawn" He concludes, leaving me many doorknobs to open.
"Now that I think about it, I don't feel any sort of mana to consume itself when I use the grimoire…" I say.
"It must be because to you, it's the gacha item, and to me, it's my source…" His voice got increasingly smaller as he talked, proof of his insecurity about his theory.
"Interesting… So are you made of mana? When you run out of it, you go back to the grimoire?" I ask the smaller questions.
"Yeah, and yeah, my mana also fades out with time so I have a limit of… I'd say 10 minutes before I go back into the grimoire" Informative.
"And when I summon a clone again, would it be you or another clone?"
"Another clone" Short answer, maybe he's getting tired of my questions
"I see… I'm going to ask this as casually as I can, so uh… Do you have any kind of clone thought? Like ¨I need to kill the original¨ kind?"
This question is big, depending on his answer I might not use cloning powers on myself. Or assimilate characters with them, it would be an ass to assimilate Twice and get his clone syndrome.
"Hmm…" He starts thinking, puts his fingers below his jaw, and looks up.
Time passes and I still don't get an answer.
Just as I was summoning a mirror positioned diagonally from behind him, he spoke.
"Nah, It's good. I don't know if it's because there's some sort of clone mentality in the grimoire or our personality is naturally like that, but I don't have any ¨There can only be one¨ thoughts."
I unsummoned the mirror.
And he continued "I did discover that I'm a bit abrasive to the idea of death. I'm not going to kill cities and siphon their mana to give more time" He raises his hand and starts waving them as if showing something exaggerated " But you wouldn't be able to use me as a meatshield, at least voluntarily"
"Seems solid" I answered
The interrogation session continued a bit further. I summoned another clone and we discovered that there is no hive mind or anything like that. Every clone is individual and unique.
I also finished testing the remaining mirror spells.
Reflect Refrain and Double Reflect Refrain are based on summoning a lot of mirrors and bombarding one place with rays. It's also about using mirrors to reflect those rays, and I think they go faster.
Mirror shift lets me teleport with mirrors. It works exactly as you think it does. I stand in front of a mirror, and I teleport to the space in front of another mirror.
My clones were cool to hang out with, although it isn't too healthy to only chat with my clones.
All in all, I think I will use this instead of the Toy Solider, it would be easier to explain in case I get seen.
…
"Whoa, this would make gun enthusiasts scream"
Not in a good way, more in the ¨This may look cool, but it is NOT usable in the slightest¨
And, well, yeah, It's not usable in the slightest.
The gold, red, and black Toy Soldier stood tall in the middle of the plain. Surrounded by nothing but the air.
"Alright, reverse now" I fidgeted with the Crystal flashlight in my hands, changing the crystal in the middle of it.
I made sure that the light encompassed the whole gun so that no part of the gun stayed massive.
Turning on the light, I saw how the 5-meter rifle became its normal size again, I tested it and it turned out as usable as it was before the changes.
"I don't know why I would use this, though"
It seems very neat, but I really don't need it now. Maybe in the future, it could be funny if I turn a titan really small with the light, but I'm sure that they can change sizes at will. So maybe the colossus of Rhodes? Or a demigod like Hercules?
That's in the very far future though, and it's not like they will let me rest for enough time that I get the lantern out and ready.
TLDR; This is useful, just not now.
…
The sun was setting quickly, seeing the colors of the sky I thought that it may already be 2 pm.
"And I'm not hungry, or thirsty, or even tired" Well, I feel those, but its not at the level someone who hasn't eaten something since yesterday should. Out of all the people, I should know.
I ate something while the overseer was talking, I think. But nothing after that, I went to my house and I left early in the morning.
"Haah~" I let my breath out and relax for the moment.
The reason why I'm taking a break now is because the item that I'm testing out now is a bit useless.
"I mean, it's good for the funsies but it isn't anything" I lay down in the shadow of a tree.
Said Item is the Saiyan Scouter that I got.
Looking at the general direction of Sparta it lets me detect their life forces or whatever.
But, well, nothing more.
It's the very basic version, apparently, the one Raditz used.
So it's rather useless.
"Or…" Hoping for something to happen, I pull it close to my chest, where the unactivated form of the Iron Spider armor lays.
It isn't uncomfortable to wear, I suppose it is like that because it was made with the thought in mind that Peter would have to wear it his whole school day.
"Aha..." Something did happen.
The nanites invaded the scouter and the white part became red with some traces of golden, while the visor remained the same in its outer appearance.
Scratch that, the HUD of the scouter looked the same too.
"What was the change then?" I pulled up the helmet of the armor and saw that it had the properties of the Scouter in it.
"It goes both ways…" It can improve and be improved.
Hmm, my idea is growing in my head.
…
"I forgot about you yesterday"
Right in between the index and middle finger of the right hand, I had the power upgrade card that I said I would use in Ice Generation.
"Should I, though?" I had some doubts about it.
What if I don't get another card like this in a while and I get a good power like atom manipulation? I would kick myself for using it in ice generation.
Or; What if the upgrade is so small it doesn't change almost anything?
What if it changes, but the power gets so strong I lose control over it?
Okay, that last one I'm sure won't happen, but my doubts were still there.
"Today is a test, so, well, I need to test" I made the quick decision, placing my doubts aside.
I summon the card and I don't need to say it as it assimilates with Ice Generation, I have some experience and I just need to will it. It's easier than it sounds.
Thankfully, the doubts I had didn't come to fruition, the two last ones.
I know what changed and I know I have control over it.
First, I can produce and control the ice I created in a 30 cm area outside my body, without any kind of physical effort, just with my mind.
Second, It now penetrates into the target. So let's say I freeze someone, even if they shake the effect off with brute strength, the ice already permeated them. Slowing, Ice damage, durability negation… Very usable.
Also, it got a general stat increase, I can't test it since I don't have anything to compare it to, but the temperature is now lower, I can't say how much, but it is lower.
There were many other changes, but they are based on upgrading various stats, not diversity.
Overall, I wouldn't say it was a bad investment, I also discovered that even low-level powers coming from low-level words can be upgraded, so I don't need to gather every superpower if I can upgrade them myself.
…
"What to do, what to do…" I debated with myself about this last item.
I know what I promised myself, but I can't waste this knowing I'll eventually have to come back to fight. Running away isn't an option either.
My dilemma has to do with the card that I'm holding in between my left index and middle fingers. The world-traveling card.
My heart wants to go to a random slice of life, hack into a bank or something, get a lot of money, and spend the months doing nothing but lazing around.
My brain is telling me to go to a world full of technology and steal it with the nanobots, then use this technology to be truly secure in the battle that's happening past tomorrow.
There is also a slight hunch that I should do the second, and normally I would ignore it, but I'm 40% Spider-Man and if that hunch is the Spider-Sense, then I need to follow it.
But that takes me to the next problem. I don't know any worlds that are low-level and technological.
Let me follow up on this, you see-
"Huh? What is that?" I hear something… It's not something natural from the forest, it's more like… A bell?
And it's coming from Sparta…
Is there something happening?
If there is… Should I go look?
Why? Or better yet, why not?
With simple thoughts like that, I opened my grimoire and summoned mirrors in the distance. Around 10 meters from me, that's the limit of my mirror placement.
From there it was simple, I summoned a mirror, teleported in front of them, unsummoned the past, and summoned a new one.
With that quick movement, I arrived at Sparta in no time. Obviously, I walked the last part of the travel, I don't want anyone talking about the teleporting kid.
Going through the gate, I walked until I got to the same place where the overseer talked yesterday.
In the dining hall, everyone was there and once a sizable amount of people arrived, the bell stopped.
"Rations" A guy behind some sort of stall said, and everyone went there.
Realizing why the bell was rung, and that everyone who was there had malnourished bodies or was fresh from the battle, I got away from the place quickly.
Still, that didn't erase the hunger in my stomach, the slight smell of the meat only made it worse.
"How did people get food in Sparta?" From what I remember… They either stole it from their peers or hunted it.
Actually, it encouraged young people to steal food from others, because it prepared them to scavenge for resources on the battlefield.
This came from a history book, and Kratos's memories only cemented the fact. So I guess I hunt and eat really bad meat. Or, I steal really bad meat. Either way, I will be eating bad meat.
I guess stealing is the only option left.
And I know who to steal from…

A/N: Hey there.
No big author note today, this was a slightly slow chapter.
Extra: I'm writing this as I edit the chapter, around 12 days after I wrote it. After editing the past chapters, saving them, and also finishing writing chapter 13.
The first 5 chapters I released in mass, as a way of seeing how the people would react to the fic, after this I will be releasing chapters every so often.
And I won't stop until all of my chapters are used, since writing without no one to see it is quite sad, and I prefer to have no chapters saved than being to only one to see them.
My point is that this is the A/N that I was writing before posting the fanfic, so I'm nervous.
I hope you enjoyed the chapter, bye bye. And don't forget to leave a review, I love those.
