Chapter 215: Yellow Springs Outpost
Chen Guan spent two million to buy the Eye Light Secret Skill. For most people, the effect of this Secret Skill is negligible, yet it is indeed a very valuable Secret Skill, and a unique item, unlikely to be encountered again.
After using the Eye Light Secret Skill, Chen Guan immediately felt the world was different. Even if someone's gaze accidentally swept over him, he could sense it immediately.
With a consumption of 1.1 Primordial Energy per second, it needs to be active to be effective. For Chen Guan, this consumption is negligible.
The only drawback is that the Eye Light can only sense other people's gaze and the direction it comes from, which is somewhat vague and not particularly precise.
However, for Chen Guan, this is sufficient.
He went to the Elixir and Heavenly and Earthly Treasures area, buying some finished elixirs and treasures, spending nearly ten million overnight, most of which went to purchasing High-Level elixirs.
After returning to the Reserve Team, Chen Guan couldn't wait and started cultivating with the elixirs.
During the two days Chen Guan was waiting for the assignment results, his exam results and preferences ended up in the hands of many.
Xiu Yingmei frowned slightly when she saw that Chen Guan chose to become a sentinel: "What does this mean, trying to avoid the spotlight?"
Ji Nanhong also frowned upon seeing Chen Guan's choice to become a sentinel: "A sentinel can only guard an outpost. I have no chance to transfer him to my side. Why would he choose this?"
Xiu Jie Ming laughed upon seeing this result: "This guy doesn't regard others at all. I guess many people are surprised now."
In the Celestial Court Army commander's office, an elderly man, looking somewhat thin and frail with greying temples, dressed in a neat military uniform, sat upright, also looking at the result.
"A sentinel? Quite an interesting person." The old man smiled, picked up a pen, and wrote a few words on the document: "If you want to stand guard, then go ahead."
Having received Chen Guan's test results, Xiu Haofeng sneered and made a call. Even if Chen Guan is heading to an outpost, he cannot let him have an easy time. He wanted to send Chen Guan to an outpost without any benefits and extremely harsh conditions, giving him no opportunity.
However, after finding someone, they didn't give him this face, nor did they clearly say why, only that Chen Guan's assigned outpost was already determined and couldn't be changed.
Xiu Haofeng assumed it was Ji Nanhong's doing, so he didn't push further, instead asking which outpost Chen Guan was assigned to.
"The Yellow Springs Outpost." Xiu Haofeng's face changed when he heard of this place.
The Yellow Springs is a river, a massive river flowing out from an unknown region, nearly traversing the entire Beimang Mountain Secret Realm.
The Yellow Springs River frequently harbors Secret Spirits of various eerie forms, too many to count.
Even though the Yellow Springs Outpost has been reconstructed and redesigned many times, with a large refuge built underneath, incidents of sentinels missing and dying continue to occur.
The Yellow Springs Outpost is considered one of the most dangerous outposts, so much so that Xiu Haofeng even entertained the idea of transferring Chen Guan to the Yellow Springs Outpost, indicating how perilous it is.
Sentinel rotation time is three years, but the soldiers who can last three years at the Yellow Springs Outpost and then transfer to other outposts are less than thirty percent.
"How could it be here?" Xiu Haofeng frowned because the corps he chose was the Blazing Fire Corps, the one closest to the Yellow Springs Outpost.
Two days later, An Yiqi also passed the test. Although he tested late, his assignment result came quicker than Chen Guan's, with the dispatch order arriving the same day.
"Blazing Fire Corps." An Yiqi inquired about it, and his face instantly turned a bit grim.
The Fire Corps is the first checkpoint after the Yellow Springs River flows from the unknown region, having the critical task of clearing Secret Spirits in the river and defending the river route, with a high casualty rate.
An Yiqi is still a landlubber and cannot swim, so how was he assigned to such a place?
"You probably got implicated by me. Before reporting in, quickly learn to swim in these few days." Chen Guan vaguely guessed, fearing he too would be assigned to the Yellow Springs Outpost.
As expected, after the dispatch order came, he was assigned to the Yellow Springs Outpost.
Chen Guan didn't mind. Now he can fight and run, mainly he can run, so worst-case scenario, he'll just run.
In terms of swimming, Chen Guan is capable. Although not proficient, he used to catch fish in big rivers when he was young, which is enough for ordinary situations.
Moreover, as a sentinel, he does not need to enter the water to clear Secret Spirits, so swimming skills shouldn't be necessary.
The two of them went to report together, but the outpost is not under the Blazing Fire Corps. All outposts are uniformly managed by the Command Department, and all information is first relayed to the Celestial Court Military Headquarters, not through major corps.
Upon arriving at the outpost, Chen Guan saw that it was where the Yellow Springs River emerged from a gorge, with the surging Yellow Springs water like a floodgate tiger or thousands of troops roaring out.
The outpost was built on a hill by the riverbank, with a white guard tower, its top painted blue, and next to it a military flag representing the Celestial Court Army flapping in the river wind.
After watching for a moment, Chen Guan suddenly saw in the roaring water of the Yellow Springs River, a massive golden goldfish, size comparable to an orca, leap out from the river, with each golden scale looking as if sculpted from gold, and its tail as ethereal and colorful as golden clouds on the horizon.
Bang!
The goldfish fell back into the river, immediately raising enormous waves, with a terrifying airwave rushing towards the rock edge, causing stones to crackle and finally coming to a stop upon hitting the riverbank.
"That golden fish Secret Spirit seemed to be of quite a high level?" Chen Guan's eyes shone with excitement, realizing there must be many resources here.
"That's an 18-level Soul-hooking Koi. When you see it, never get close to the Yellow Springs River, lest it hooks your soul away." A sentinel next to the outpost railing said with a grin to Chen Guan below.
Looking up, Chen Guan found the sentinel to be a young man about his age, smiling brightly.
Upon arriving at the outpost, Chen Guan learned that this young sentinel had been transferred three months prior, his name being Jiuyue, surname Lian.
At the Yellow Springs Outpost, there were only three people in total: Chen Guan, Lian Jiuyue, and an old sentinel named Old Mo, who was also the head of the outpost, the direct superior to Chen Guan and Jiuyue.
Though called a direct superior, he was essentially responsible for receiving supplies, conveying orders, reporting work, and so forth.
The watch duty was on a three-shift schedule, with all three needing to stand watch, Old Mo being no exception.
"Chen Guan, since you're new, there are some unwritten rules at our outpost you need to know." Old Mo said while wiping his reading glasses.
Old Mo is truly old and has been at the Yellow Springs Outpost for many years, improving the survival rate here with his experience alone. He hasn't been rotated to other outposts because of his rich experience and understanding of the Yellow Springs River conditions.
"Please, go ahead," Chen Guan listened earnestly.
"Don't go into the water indiscriminately, don't stand guard when the wind is calm, shut the windows when the thunder roars, turn away when you see dead fish, and don't look back if you hear a sound," Jiuyue interjected.
