Chapter 132: Snake-entwined Wood

The level range of the Ghost-eyed Serpent is quite large, from Level 4 to Level 10, and the quality is equally varied.

However, Ghost-eyed Serpents rarely appear in groups. Originally, they were terrifying precisely because they were difficult to detect. Now that they have the aid of Scale Glasses, dealing with Ghost-eyed Serpents is much easier.

The Ghost-eyed Serpent sprang from the ground, silently darting through the air, only to be sliced into two by Chen Guan and his companions, posing no significant threat.

Chen Guan summoned Rouge and the Paperman, allowing Rouge to suck blood and hoping to upgrade the Paperman.

But Chen Guan quickly discovered that the Paperman did not upgrade from killing Secret Spirits, nor did it have any interest in the items from the Secret Spirits. He didn't know how exactly it could upgrade.

Since it didn't take up space, Chen Guan kept it on him, hoping to figure out a quick upgrade method.

After walking in the Ghost Eye Cave for a while, Chen Guan was surprised to find that the Paperman, which had done nothing, surprisingly upgraded from Level 1 to Level 2 just by staying on him.

What shocked Chen Guan even more was that the Paperman's Primordial Energy increased by 12 points.

"Gaining 12 points per level, but its Growth Rate is only 3.0, which means the Growth Rate is the result of multiplying by the Basic Elemental Energy. The Basic Elemental Energy for ordinary Secret Spirits and humans is 1, so if the Growth Rate is 2, 1 multiplied by 2 equals 2, increasing Primordial Energy by 2 points per level. However, for the Paperman, it's 3 multiplied by 4, adding 12 points per level. This increase in Primordial Energy is truly terrifying. Secret God Level Secret Spirits are indeed incredibly powerful. I wonder if other Secret God Level pets are just as bizarre. How can I acquire another one for comparison?" Chen Guan pondered.

Following the map given by the mission, the three of them advanced through the complex cave in darkness. Lighting here was not very effective, even though they were using powerful LED lights, which should illuminate other areas brightly. Here, however, they only illuminated a few meters ahead, beyond which things were unclear. The cave's air seemed to contain faint mist, but it was indistinguishable to the naked eye.

Fortunately, the Scale Glasses were indeed useful, allowing them to detect the Ghost-eyed Serpents early in the dark, killing quite a few along the way. They even acquired a rare Ghost-eyed Serpent pet, several Secret Skills of Snake Fist, and a Ghost Snake Heart Method.

The Paperman did nothing, just staying outside. By the time Chen Guan and his team reached the vicinity of the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python's lair, it had already upgraded to Level 3.

Rouge was still at Level 9. It had just leveled up, and the blood of ordinary Secret Spirits made it difficult to level up again in a short time.

When the three arrived near the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python's lair, they put away their pets, cautiously and stealthily approaching.

Around there, there were no traces of Ghost-eyed Serpents, presumably because even they dared not go near here.

"We seem to have gotten here too smoothly. Didn't they say the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python would often roam around the cave? We've seen no trace of it along the way. Something must be wrong. Everyone, be careful," Chen Guan whispered.

Men Team and An Yiqi both nodded in agreement, and the three crept along the cave wall, approaching the nest entrance. The leading Men Team secretly peeked inside.

Men Team's expression turned peculiar, prompting Chen Guan and An Yiqi to quickly join him to look inside. There, they saw a colossal creature, at least sixty to seventy meters long, with a body diameter that must be over a meter. It radiated a bluish-white glow, coiled like a small mountain.

Its head greatly resembled a king cobra, with a particularly wide area below the head, looking like it had two fleshy wings.

"It's truly terrifying!" The three had long known that the Emperor Vein Ghost-eyed Serpent was enormous, but seeing it with their own eyes still left them tremendously awed, instilling a sense of fear—the kind of existence unmatched by humans.

Besides the small mountain-like Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python, beneath it lay a large pile of bluish-white glowing items. Upon closer inspection, they realized it was a massive pile of Ghost Python Sheddings, layered and stacked together, clearly more than just a single shedding.

"It seems this task hasn't been completed this month, and the previous teams have also failed, which is why so many sheddings have accumulated," Chen Guan dared not make a sound, contemplating in his mind.

The three watched for a while, noticing the terrifying Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python remained motionless, coiled there as if sleeping.

Suddenly, Men Team patted Chen Guan and An Yiqi, signaling for them to follow him in retreat.

The three retreated far from the lair, and only then did Men Team dare to speak, and in an extremely low voice, "I know why the previous teams didn't complete this task and how it came to our turn."

"Why?" An Yiqi asked, puzzled.

"Did you notice anything about the intertwining part of the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python's body?" Men Team asked.

"I didn't see anything," Chen Guan shook his head.

"That's because you didn't take off the glasses. The glasses make the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python's body and the snake shed on the ground glow, allowing you to see them but obscuring other things."

Men Team paused before continuing, "Where the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python's body intertwines, there's a gap revealing what's likely a piece of wood or a root."

"Wood or root?" An Yiqi showed a face full of confusion.

Chen Guan didn't understand either, so he asked, "What's special about that wood? Why is the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python entwined with it?"

After some hesitation, Men Team replied, "I don't know the origin or peculiarity of that wood, but there's a legend about pythons in my hometown."

"Snakes, by nature, have a strong inclination for mating and reproduction—perhaps due to their nature or genes. So regardless of the python type, they intensely desire to mate. However, if a snake in its mating period can't find a mate, it'll find a vine or a piece of wood or root and coil around it to vent its bodily urges. In my hometown, such wood is known as Snake-entwined Wood."

"You're suggesting that the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python is in heat, and the piece of wood or root it's coiled around is its ... pleasure stick," An Yiqi said, with a mischievous grin.

Your description is apt. Ordinary snakes don't leave their nest during mating and are easily provoked. I don't know if the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python is like that," Men Team said with a smile.

"I suppose it must be. Otherwise, the previous team wouldn't have returned empty-handed—it means we can't take its sheddings when it's away. We have to wait for it to finish, right?" Chen Guan contemplated.

"If it truly is Snake-entwined Wood, then yes, we likely have to wait," Men Team nodded.

"How long until it finishes?" An Yiqi asked curiously.

"Typically, snakes take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to mate. Some can last for dozens of hours, and Secret Spirit snakes are unpredictable. Besides, this is the Emperor Vein Ghost-Eyed Python. The last team likely didn't wait for it to finish, disturbing it and getting chased away, or they retreated knowing they couldn't win. Nobody knows when it will finish," Men Team shook his head with a wry smile.
