Chapter 49: F-rank Dungeon: Part IV
As the two monsters circled back and forth, staring at the other with an intensity that would melt the sun. They didn't want the other monster to attack first, since whoever attacked first, they thought, would have the upper hand.
Both of them then stopped abruptly. In the blink of an eye, they lunged at each other, claws meeting fist, and vice versa. Nova hit the alpha's snout as the alpha clawed through Nova's chest, swiping downward, ripping his clothes.
Nova removed his T-shirt, showcasing his ripped muscles and all the scars from his battle with the wolves. Fresh blood gushed out, as old blood froze, itching that part of his skin.
He rolled his shoulders back, cracking his knuckles, as he lightly jumped in place like a boxer. Then, as he still had some wolf blood on the back of his hand, he licked it in front of the alpha, triggering it, savouring every last inch of it.
He took a step, then disappeared from the alpha's viewpoint. The alpha looked around cautiously, getting slightly nervous. It lowly growled, astonished by the sight at hand.
Then, Nova reappeared, behind the alpha, who had no idea, until the very last second, but that didn't help. It didn't feint, and Nova used his corkscrew punch to obliterate the ever living shit out of the alpha's cheeks.
He backed up. Panting heavily, the alpha stared down at him with its red, evil eyes. Its muscles were clearly visible, open for Nova to devour and savour. Nova licked his tongue, grinning at the alpha.
The alpha lunged at him, going even faster than before, but Nova was pushed to third gear, making him even stronger and faster, and overall making him an apprehensive opponent for the alpha.
Nova ascended upwards, jumping higher than the alpha expected. Then landed safely on the ground, like a cat. The alpha went for him again, aiming its claws wildly at Nova.
Nova feinted to the left as the claw came from the right, slipping just past his face. The alpha had overextended its arm, which left an opening, which Nova took, and put another corkscrew punch straight into its chest.
The alpha howled as the pain was unbearable. Nova descended back, going back into his defensive stance. The alpha then growled at Nova in fury; in anger; in resolve of thinking that it would win the fight. But the fight was already decided the second it laid eyes on Nova.
Then, the alpha saw something. An opportunity to turn the tide. To perhaps even the odds and win. Since Nova had descended back, he was much further away from Adam, who was unconscious. The alpha was only a couple of meters away, while Nova was a baker's dozen.
The alpha ran towards Adam, just like Nova. Adam had become their center of focus, since both needed him for different reasons. They rushed towards him, Nova faster, but still far away.
The alpha plunged his claws into Adam's chest, gripping him tightly, picking him up, as Nova got there a second too late. Nova gritted his teeth, chasing the alpha, but the alpha just ran. He had no other choice but to run. He ran in zig-zag patterns, taking sharp turns at every point he could, which eventually started to shake Nova off.
Nova grew more frustrated as he started to lose stamina. He panted hard, his arms resting on his knee. His mouth was wide open, gasping for air. The alpha smirked at him, as he still had much more stamina than Nova could even try to muster up.
Nova's chest rose and fell, like trying to manage a kite. His fists were trembling, not from fear, but from the weight of exhaustion dragging at his muscles. He clenched his jaw, eyes narrowing, refusing to let the alpha see him break.
He spat blood on the ground, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and cracked his neck as though daring the beast to come at him.
The alpha simply smirked.
It darted forward, being even faster, its claws slicing through the air. Nova tried to pivot, to slip past the strike like before, but his legs felt heavy, sluggish. His body didn't obey the same way it did before.
The alpha's claws tore across his ribs, sending fresh blood flying. Nova staggered back, nearly dropping to one knee, but he forced himself up, grinning with blood-stained teeth as though pain was nothing but fuel to rage on.
"Is that it?" he muttered, his voice low, hoarse, but still sharp enough to bite.
The alpha growled, circling. Knowing Nova's speed had decreased, nearly dulled by forty percent, his strength as well was taking a hit; it struck again, this time with no hesitation.
A claw ripped into Nova's arm, leaving the muscle shredded. Another swipe came immediately, crashing into his shoulder, spinning him halfway around. His body jerked with each hit, his movements losing that clean precision that defined him.
But Nova still stood. Relentless.
He threw a desperate punch, a wild corkscrew aimed for the alpha's jaw. It landed, but not with the same crushing force as before. The alpha barely flinched, lips curling into something like a grin. Its red eyes were hungry for blood, for victory.
Nova panted, vision blurring. His hands shook as he lifted them back into his stance. His knuckles bled, his chest rose violently, and his once-ruthless grin flickered into something painful, something stubborn.
The alpha didn't wait. It struck again, claws slicing across Nova's chest, then his back, then his thigh. Slash after slash, blow after blow, until Nova's body was painted in wounds. Each hit drove him further into the ground, his footing breaking, his defense crumbling.
Still, he was reluctant to fall.
He screamed through, becoming his original monster self, staggering forward with his arms wide, desperate to grab the alpha, to tear it apart, to prove he wasn't finished. But the alpha was quicker now, or maybe Nova was just slower.
It ducked beneath his reach, hammered a claw into Nova's stomach, then clawed upward, tearing his flesh like paper.
