Chapter 163: Chapter 163: The Crisis of White Mountain City

Chapter 163: The Crisis of White Mountain City

"Miss—no, buddy, is this some kind of ghost story?" Mark asked with a nervous laugh.

James calmed himself and continued, "At first, I didn't think too much about it. I just thought I was lucky to get my share of fortune, but that wasn't the case."

James and the mountain walkers returned to White Mountain City, ready to divide the herbs. James thought that even getting a small share of the herbs would be enough for him. However, most of the mountain walkers barely took any herbs at all, only grabbing a few here and there.

In the end, the bulk of the herbs was split among just four people, including James.

The entire arduous journey had been for these herbs—so why were most people refusing to take them?

James grew suspicious. He offered the most valuable herb he had to Mr. Howard, insisting that at least this one should be taken.

But to James's shock, Mr. Howard didn't recognize the herb!

This was the same herb Mr. Howard had personally dug up!

James noticed something unsettling in Mr. Howard's gaze—it had shifted from kind and aged to something sinister and filled with malice.

There was something about their expressions, about the way they looked at him, that made James's hair stand on end and sent chills down his spine.

Those eyes… they weren't human!

Things were getting stranger by the moment.

In truth, the fact that over ten people had safely returned from White Mountain was already the biggest anomaly. What if these mountain walkers… weren't human?!

The thought that he had spent a month traveling with "things" made James's blood run cold.

As James reeled in horror at his own realization, Mr. Howard spoke up.

Mr. Howard suggested they find a place to eat and celebrate.

Eat with them? Was he joking?

The other two people who had received large shares of the herbs also refused Mr. Howard's invitation and hurriedly returned to their communities.

James didn't dare delay either. He grabbed only a small amount of herbs and ran home as fast as he could.

Mark gave a strained smile and asked, "Are you sure this is all true? You're not just pulling my leg, are you?"

James gave Mark a sidelong glance and replied, "You're the captain of the Security Division. Would I dare lie to you?"

Mark asked, "Then why didn't you report this to the authorities?"

James continued recounting his experiences.

Initially, James thought he was safe.

One day, he went to the Security Division to trade the herbs for supplies, only to witness a scene he would never forget for the rest of his life. He saw a security officer escorting a prisoner.

Everyone in White Mountain City knew the rule—there were no detained prisoners in White Mountain City. Only those about to be executed.

Curious to see what a dying prisoner looked like, James was horrified to recognize the prisoner—it was one of the mountain walkers who had taken a large share of the herbs!

Even worse, the security officer escorting the prisoner looked disturbingly familiar. After staring for a moment, James's scalp went numb.

The security officer was one of the mountain walkers who had disappeared in White Mountain!

A dead man had returned to White Mountain City as a security officer.

When the officer noticed James staring, he gave him a disturbingly eerie smile.

After trading the herbs for money, James sprinted all the way home.

Once he calmed down, he pieced together three conclusions.

First, those who returned from White Mountain had been replaced. Second, the missing mountain walkers had come back to White Mountain City with new identities. Third, the real surviving mountain walkers were being hunted by those "things."

"That's why, to survive, I present myself under a different appearance. The money from selling those herbs has kept me alive for months without needing to work," James finished.

Mark's expression became grim. "Are you saying those things have already infiltrated the Security Division?"

Alexander shook his head. "It's not just the Security Division. White Mountain City itself has been infiltrated. There's no telling how many magical creatures are already mixed in."

Mark opened his mouth, struggling to form words. "How is this possible? Can those creatures really take human form?"

Alexander nodded. "Yes. There's a type of magical creature called the Disguiser. They have the ability to do just that."

Alexander then fell into deep thought.

If that were the case, White Mountain City had already been compromised. The magical creatures had been preparing for this for a long time. The next attack on the city would likely be devastating, aiming to wipe it out entirely.

Mark suddenly jumped to his feet. "This… this is terrifying! I have to inform my father immediately!"

Mark was about to leave. "Alex, are you coming with me or staying for a bit longer?"

After learning that Alexander had awakened combat talents, Mark no longer worried about Alexander's safety. What a joke—this is Alex! If he's awakened, who in White Mountain City could possibly beat him?

Alexander shook his head. "You go ahead."

Mark nodded. "I'll leave my car for you, Alex." He handed over the keys to Alexander and quickly walked out.

After Mark left, Alexander's expression changed. The playful, carefree demeanor vanished, replaced by a calm, composed aura with eyes deep as the ocean.

James noticed the shift in Alexander's mood. It was intimidating, making him feel as if he were trespassing in forbidden territory. He didn't dare speak and sat quietly, watching the bloodbath in the arena as the "Meat Grinder" secured yet another victory.

James couldn't help but wonder about Alexander's true identity.

Alexander crossed one leg over the other and watched the arena for a while. Boring. These fights are nothing more than child's play.

He glanced at his watch. "Mark should have left by now."

Standing up, Alexander prepared to leave.

James hesitated, wanting to follow but fearing he might upset Alexander. If Alexander still thought of him as the "beautiful woman," perhaps he could plead coyly to tag along. After all, Mark had mentioned that Jonathan King might be waiting for him outside.

Alexander turned and glanced at James. "You're not leaving?"

James's face lit up with relief. He quickly stood and followed Alexander.

"Are you sure you saw Mark leave alone?" Jonathan King leaned against a Range Rover and asked one of his men.

The man replied, "Positive. Captain Mark left by himself, without anyone else."

Jonathan King's face darkened. "What did you just call him?"

The man immediately realized his slip-up. "I mean… Mark the Fatty!"

Jonathan King sneered. "In a few days, the position of Security Division Captain will be mine! Mark the Fatty? Hah! That perverted bastard who likes cross-dressers!"

The man quickly nodded in agreement.

Jonathan King turned his gaze toward the entrance of Happy Valley, waiting for James to appear. He was determined to settle his score with James after being humiliated by Mark. He might not be able to deal with Mark, but he could certainly handle this deadbeat cross-dresser.

Finally, two figures emerged from Happy Valley.

One was tall and straight, dressed in a black trench coat.

The other had wavy hair and wore a crop top.

James froze upon seeing Jonathan King. His face turned pale, and his steps faltered. Instinctively, he reached out and grabbed Alexander's sleeve.

Alexander scanned the surroundings. The street was empty, with no streetlights, only the faint glow of Happy Valley's sign.

The area was desolate, with only two guards standing at the entrance of Happy Valley.

Alexander let out a self-deprecating chuckle. This isn't North Sea City, a bustling metropolis of national importance. Why am I so cautious?

Jonathan King approached with a group of lackeys, his expression full of malice.

He looked Alexander up and down. "Hey, kid, are you friends with Mark the Fatty? How come I've never seen you before? Where do you live?"

Alexander's lips curled into a faint smile. "North Sea."

Jonathan King paused for a moment, then burst into laughter, pointing at Alexander. "North Sea? This idiot says he's from North Sea! Hahaha, do you even know how far North Sea is from White Mountain City?"

Alexander's smile deepened.
