Chapter 153: Chapter 153: White Mountain City
Chapter 153: White Mountain City
"Guest from Room 302... so strange."
"Is he rich or poor?"
"If he's rich, why stay in such an ordinary room? If he's poor, how did he pay for a whole month upfront?"
"Look at his clothes. The fabric is so fine; he must be wealthy, right?"
A few women gathered at the counter, whispering about Alexander.
Among them were girls as young as fourteen or fifteen, teenagers around eighteen or nineteen, and women in their thirties. This mix of youth and maturity was the kind of "variety" only found in bars or nightclubs in South Sea City.
But then again, it made sense—what city could compare to South Sea City? Other cities lacked entertainment facilities.
Thriving cities indulged in sophistication, while those ravaged by demonic beasts sought only to vent their desires.
"In our inn, guests can request a companion. Yet, he declined and went straight to his room alone," remarked a young girl in white stockings, leaning her arms on the counter.
"Could it be he doesn't like women?" mused a more experienced girl, taking a drag from her cigarette and exhaling a cloud of smoke. "We've already sent James to check on him. If that gentleman really likes men, James might just hit the jackpot!"
The room was simple: a table, a chair, a bed, and an air conditioner that never worked. Still, it was clean and tidy.
Alexander placed his bag on the bed, sat in the chair, and pulled out his phone. "Why is the signal so bad here?"
He tried to open a map app but got stuck on the loading screen. Frustrated, Alexander took a physical map from his bag. "The Changbai Mountain Heavenly Lake Volcano is very close. Maybe I'll head up there tomorrow for a look. A guide would be nice."
As Alexander pondered, there was a knock on the door. "Come in," he said.
The door opened, revealing a fair-skinned young man. Alexander eyed him suspiciously. "I thought I said not to disturb me unless it's important."
The young man blinked, hesitated, and finally asked, "Do you need a massage, sir? There are many beautiful girls downstairs."
Alexander shook his head. "No. Leave."
The young man bit his lip. "I can give you a massage too."
Alexander froze. What kind of nonsense is this? His face expressionless, Alexander replied, "No."
The young man hesitated for a moment, a conflicted look crossing his face. Remembering the innkeeper's strict orders, he seemed to steel himself and said, "You can massage me if you'd like."
Three black lines appeared on Alexander's forehead. "Get out!"
The young man finally realized Alexander wasn't into men and had a perfectly normal orientation. Visibly relieved, the young man let out a breath. "Got it, brother."
Smiling, he was about to close the door when Alexander called out, "Wait."
The young man's face darkened, forcing a smile. "What is it, brother?"
He had taken this job at the inn hoping to do hard labor, but the innkeeper insisted on exploiting his looks. In this world, all kinds of strange people existed—there was no telling who might take a liking to him.
Seeing the nervous look on the young man's face, Alexander felt irritated. He turned away and looked at his map. "Do you know anyone familiar with Changbai Mountain?"
At the mention of Changbai Mountain, the young man's face turned pale—paler than before. "Changbai Mountain is terrifying. Everyone who goes there dies," he stammered.
Alexander noticed his legs trembling. This reaction was too extreme. Could it be that the young man had been to Changbai Mountain? Even in a place as dangerous as Changbai Mountain, if someone hadn't been there, fear wouldn't be carved so deeply into their bones.
Alexander raised an eyebrow, then took a wad of cash and placed it on the table. "Find me someone who's been to Changbai Mountain. This money is yours if you do."
The young man's eyes sparkled as he stared at the cash but quickly dimmed with a hint of regret. "Alright. If I find someone, I'll let you know."
After speaking, the pale-faced young man glanced at the wad of cash on the table multiple times before reluctantly leaving the inn with a downcast expression.
Alexander shook his head. He wasn't afraid of anyone coveting his money.
"The Public Security Bureau probably has plenty of people who've been to Changbai Mountain. Should I go there and drag one of them along?"
With this thought, he decided to take a stroll through White Mountain City.
The inn's first-floor lobby was noisy and chaotic.
Several security officers lounged on the sofas, each with a woman draped over them, their hands wandering inappropriately. The women didn't seem to mind; instead, they flirted coquettishly with the men.
The officers watched the events in the lobby with amusement.
One of them, a burly man with a thick beard, stared lasciviously at the pale-faced young man kneeling on the floor.
This officer, surnamed Doe, was a captain in the Fifth Squad, known by everyone as Captain Doe. His preferences were problematic; he wasn't interested in curvaceous, seductive women but favored slender, pale young men instead.
It wasn't that Captain Doe had plans to do anything intimate with the pale-faced youth. During a previous demonic beast siege, he had sustained injuries that left him incapable in that regard. Instead, he found twisted enjoyment in using torture devices on the weak.
"You've got goods like this, and you didn't tell me sooner? Today, I'll make sure to break him!" Captain Doe rubbed his hands together, a sinister grin on his face.
A mature woman lying in another officer's arms covered her mouth and laughed.
"He's new here. Didn't I call you the moment he arrived?"
She glanced at the pale-faced young man, whose complexion was ashen, and smiled cruelly.
"I don't keep idle people around. If you can't earn me money, you might as well serve Captain Doe."
The pale-faced youth knelt, pleading with the woman.
"Madam, I can work hard! I can do anything!"
The woman interrupted him.
"James, do you think hard work is enough to put food on the table in times like these? This is a brothel, not a charity!"
Captain Doe grabbed James by the collar and dragged him toward the basement.
The basement was infamous among the women as the stuff of nightmares. To cater to the twisted desires of certain customers, it was stocked with various perverse instruments.
If James were to stay down there for even an afternoon, he wouldn't die, but he'd surely suffer terribly.
At that moment, footsteps echoed from the staircase.
Everyone turned to see a young man in a black trench coat descending.
Captain Doe's eyes lit up instantly.
"Madam, you've been holding out on us. Look at this premium stock!"
The madam froze for a moment before hastily explaining.
"He's not one of our staff; he's a guest staying here!"
Captain Doe shot her a disdainful look.
"A guest? Who in White Mountain City has the leisure to stay at an inn? Don't tell me he came from another city. If this guy had the ability to cross city borders, would he come to a brothel in White Mountain City?"
He then gave the madam a meaningful glance.
"This kid's dressed so flashy. Don't tell me he's your kept boy? What's the matter? My brothers here can't satisfy you? Should I take you to the Public Security Bureau tonight and let the boys there have a turn?"
Terror flashed across the madam's face.
To run a brothel here, she not only had to let her girls serve these rogue soldiers for free but also pay monthly tributes.
In a city teetering on the edge of chaos, offending the Public Security Bureau was a death sentence.
