Chapter 2: Chapter 2: No Longer a Simp (1/2)
Early the next morning, he carried his only ten copper coins, slung his backpack over his shoulder, and headed to the internet café.
As soon as he stepped inside, the smell of smoke filled his nose. However, the smoke here didn't seem as pungent as in the internet cafés of his previous life.
Qin Siyang had never smoked before, so he wasn't sure what the difference was.
The internet café was a bit run-down, seemingly never properly renovated. The walls were just painted and covered with some cracked-pattern stickers, but even so, it was much better than where Qin Siyang lived.
After all, there were two lights overhead.
Not candle lamps, but electric lights.
In the Safe Zone, anyone who could afford electricity was considered wealthy in Qin Siyang's eyes.
And those who could run a business that used electricity? Even wealthier.
In this impoverished area on the outskirts of the Safe Zone, no one could afford to patronize an internet café.
Yet, somehow, there was one operating here.
As the only internet café nearby, Qin Siyang had heard that the owner had some connections, and strange people often frequented the place.
"One machine, just half an hour is enough."
Qin Siyang threw down ten copper coins—his entire week's earnings from working at the school library.
The scarcity of electricity made internet café fees exorbitantly high. Giving away ten copper coins felt like bleeding money to Qin Siyang.
The internet café attendant, a plump man in his thirties sitting at the counter, gave Qin Siyang a few extra glances before pointing expressionlessly at a computer,"That one, go ahead."
As Qin Siyang sat down, he noticed a man not far away, a thin cigar in his mouth, typing away at the keyboard.
Only then did Qin Siyang realize why the smoke in this internet café smelled better than in those of his previous life.
Because the internet café was expensive.
People who had the money to come here were usually researching information or conducting business transactions.
Naturally, the cigarettes they smoked were of far better quality than the cheap ones from his past life.
As for what kind of transactions they were making, Qin Siyang had no idea.
He powered on the computer, but the machine was painfully slow—it took a full two minutes just to reach the login screen.
No choice. Faster computers cost more.
He immediately logged into the forum for Sequence Users, [Godslayer Camp], and searched for known Sequences.
The top-pinned thread was a statistical overview of all currently awakened Sequences. He clicked in without hesitation.
From New Year's Day in 2005 until now, a full five years had passed, and thousands of Sequences had been awakened.
Everyone had awakened suddenly—none in the bizarre way that he did.
A post titled [How Can Humans Retake Blue Star?] caught Qin Siyang's attention.
["The current awakened abilities give no hope of wiping out the gods."]
["The gods can eat humans to regenerate, but humans can't eat gods to grow stronger—how can we possibly win?"]
["If only there were a Sequence that lets you grow stronger by devouring gods."]
["Thousands of Sequences have already appeared, yet not a single one is related to devouring gods. Hopeless!"]
So...
Not only was his awakening method unique, but so was his Sequence ability.
Qin Siyang swallowed hard and muttered,"Could it be... I'm the Chosen One?"
The [God-Eater] Sequence—without a doubt, once it was revealed, it would shake the entire Safe Zone.
But then his gaze landed on one particular reply, and he hesitated.
["Hey, if you really awakened a Sequence that lets you devour gods to grow stronger, you'd probably be captured and studied. No way you'd still be here typing."]
Captured and studied…
Now that he had some understanding of Sequence abilities, Qin Siyang knew his [God-Eater] Sequence was something countless people desperately longed for.
The [Godslayer Camp] had tens of thousands of Sequence Users, all yearning for a power that allowed them to digest gods and strengthen themselves.
Qin Siyang cautiously realized—he wasn't strong enough to match the power of this miraculous Sequence.
There was an old saying: "An innocent man may be killed for possessing a treasure."
If someone had power they couldn't defend, danger was inevitable.
Some might envy him and try to kill him. But more likely, someone coveting his ability would capture him for research.
If you're just a little stronger than others, they call you a hero.
If you're far stronger than everyone else, they call you a threat.
Qin Siyang immediately made up his mind—he absolutely had to keep this a secret. If he revealed it, life might become worse than death.
Get rich quietly.
In both his past and present lives, this had always been an unshakable truth.
As he was planning his next steps, the computer screen suddenly switched back to the login interface, displaying a message:
[Your time is up. If you wish to continue using the machine, please pay at the counter.]
The ten copper coins had bought him just half an hour of internet access. Such was the hardship of being poor.
Even with a Sequence as powerful as his, he still had to log off on time.
But in just thirty minutes, Qin Siyang had found the information he needed.
Those ten copper coins were not wasted. At least now, he knew—he absolutely must not let anyone find out about his [God-Eater] Sequence.
Qin Siyang slung his backpack over his shoulder and left the internet café under the confused gaze of the plump attendant.
The moment he stepped outside, the air instantly felt fresher. No smoke, no greasy smells—just the ordinary scent of dust.
However, without the artificial lighting, the surroundings were pitch black. Qin Siyang had to take a moment to adjust before he could make out the dimly lit road.
Through the Safe Zone's reinforced glass, he looked up at the endless galaxy spread across the sky.
Occasionally, colossal gods drifted through the void.
Once again, Qin Siyang felt lost.
What should he do next? Where should he go?
To the Safe Zone's exit? Or back to school?
According to [Godslayer Camp], every day at the Safe Zone's exit, teams of Sequence Users set out to hunt gods.
To support humanity's counterattack against the gods, the United Government provided extensive resources and incentives to Sequence Users. In exchange, Sequence Users had to hunt the gods outside the Safe Zone.
And the more gods they killed—and the bigger they were—the greater the rewards.
To prove their kills, Sequence Users would bring back the most distinctive part of the god's body as evidence to claim their prize.
So Qin Siyang figured, if he waited at the Safe Zone's exit, he might get a chance to take a bite of a god's flesh and verify whether his [God-Eater] Sequence actually worked.
If it did, he could skyrocket in power.
He could hide outside the Safe Zone, continuously hunting gods until he became an unparalleled powerhouse. Then, when he returned, he would dominate everything.
His Sequence was absurdly powerful. Hunting gods would directly increase his strength—an infinite growth loop.
But after reviewing his skill panel, Qin Siyang calmed down and shook his head.
'Blood Feast's description says I can digest gods by eating them. But it doesn't say I can absorb them.'
'Digestion and absorption are two different things. I need to be sure.'
'If I can't absorb them, that means I won't get the necessary nutrients from eating gods.'
If that were the case, even if he killed countless gods, he would starve to death outside the Safe Zone.
A hero can be brought down by hunger.
That left him with only one option—go back to school.
Going to the safe zone's exit and trying his luck indeed had the possibility of making him stronger.
But today's summer calendar had the words [Nothing is auspicious], which meant that today was likely unsuitable for doing anything based on luck.
Qin Siyang wasn't superstitious at first, but since even something as unscientific as rebirth and the apocalypse had happened, being superstitious suddenly seemed reasonable.
Whenever people encounter things beyond their comprehension, they can't help but become superstitious.
However, even if he managed to grow stronger at the safe zone's exit, it would still take time to exchange his ability for food—it wasn't something that could happen overnight.
But inside the school, this problem didn't exist.
The school had lunch and dinner. Without the school, Qin Siyang wouldn't even know how to survive on the outskirts of this rundown safe zone.
More importantly, today was Friday.
On Saturdays and Sundays, the school had days off. When school was on break, the cafeteria would be closed, which meant he wouldn't be able to get a free meal.
If he missed the cafeteria today, with not a single coin to his name, he would have to starve for another two days.
That was not an easy decision.
Not only did he have to go to school today, but he also had to lower his pride and ask the cafeteria lady to give him an extra portion of food to get through the weekend with one or two meals.
The cafeteria lady also knew he was an orphan, so she usually turned a blind eye when he asked for more food.
On weekends, school was on break, but sequence ability user squads didn't rest—this was understandable.
Sequence ability users needed to submit god remains to the United Government in exchange for resources. They weren't much different from self-employed individuals running their own business. Since they had to manage their own profits and losses, their work schedules weren't as clearly defined.
So, Qin Siyang could still try his luck at the safe zone's exit tomorrow or the day after.
Without a doubt, going to school was the best choice. Even if he had no intention of studying at all.
