146 - Daggat/Zuss: Mouse Hunting



"So? How do I look?" Daggat asked.

The others had a wide range of emotions on their face. Tearful relief on Anath. Terror from Hunter. No expression on Alfred whatsoever. Murderous anger from both Klaw and Zuss.

Klaw slowly walked forward, then looked him up and down.

His eyes settled on Daggat's, "I am going to hit you now."

Daggat blinked in surprise, "What? Wait-"

Klaw held back only a little. The punch to his face sent Daggat tumbling across the laboratory.

Daggat growled from the floor and slowly moved his jaw. Not broken. He touched his face and found blood on his fingers.

He stood, "You busted my lip! I just got that."

"Lucky that wasn't dishonorable. I still would've anyway."

"What was that for?"

Zuss ruffled her feathers, "For being so, incredibly, infuriatingly, stupid. Why didn't you tell us what you were doing?"

"Would you have stopped me?"

"Yes," Hunter answered.

"Well, there you go. Look, it all worked out!"

Klaw unsheathed and sheathed his claws, "Maggat! This isn't a game. You almost went too far."

Daggat laughed, "Not a game? Of COURSE it is! Klaw, this world is just a playground for us to kill each other in. Don't you know that?"

Klaw was stunned by the response, "That's not… that's a bad mentality to have."

"Think about it. Everything we do helps us kill. We are rewarded with more power. When we die, guess what, we just try again. New life! Fresh start. We play again and hope we get far enough to get to whatever waits for us if we are 'worthy'."

"It's not all about killing," Anath said sadly.

Daggat pointed at her with a smile, "Correct! It's also about changing. Building and destroying. Nothing done cannot be undone. I just regained the use of an arm that was RIPPED from me. We can do whatever we want, and none of it matters. Consequences can be fixed."

Hunter, who had been crouching, stood to his full height. "Sometimes, Daggat, there are things that can be lost we cannot get back. No matter the skill choices. Not even with reincarnation. We almost lost you, Daggat. In the worst way. That was your own doing."

"I…" Daggat started. He had to admit that it was a bit too close. And Hunter had a point. Even if Daggat tracked down his reincarnation, Glut would never come back. "Alright. You're right. Sorry."

Hunter smiled, "It's okay. You can't help being you."

Daggat clapped his hands, "Well, since everyone, except Elyndris, is here, let's talk next steps! There is an orc camp nearby. Now that I am INCREDIBLY charming, I think we can use them."

"Use them?" Anath said with a flat look.

"Mutual using." Daggat corrected, "Hunter, what food we got?"

"Um, some giant, a wolverine monster… some basics like flour, oil, salt. Some orc jerky left. A turtle thing? Where did we get that? Then here we have some maple syrup left over, and we can get some wild onions and herbs. You hungry?"

"Sounds like enough. I want to host a feast. Really impress them, you know? Can you get started on making some food?"

His eyes lit up, "Sure!"

"Alfred, can you help him get set up and all?" Daggat asked.

"While I want to remind you I am not, in fact, a servant… fine," Alfred said.

"Zuss, get me some details about the orcs."

"Alright. Then I have my own stuff to do." She said, then she was off.

After she left, Daggat approached the group, "Seriously though, how do I look?"

"You're taller. Kind of skinny. Weird skinny, like me. And a lot more hair. One of your ears is white, just like your new arm." Anath said.

Daggat ran his fingers through his new hair; it wasn't as greasy as before. "Kind of wanted to stay small. Oh well."

The party went upstairs, and Daggat meandered his way towards the garden. Nothing was growing, but he wanted to wander while he admired his new abilities. He managed to get away from the party, luckily. Daggat had a feeling this event was going to cause a bit of strain.

First, he snapped his thumb to produce flame. It worked as usual, but this flame was a deep green. It did not flicker like a normal flame. It was wilder, less consistent. Sometimes flickering in strange shapes and patterns. But it produced heat like a flame.

His new biotrait, Unnatural Beauty, was like Klaws Muscle Helix or his Efficient Neurology. Except that instead of strength or intelligence, it improved charm. Bringing it to 28. He never thought he'd see the day his charm surpassed his intelligence, but here it was.

Next, his Beguiling Presence mutated. That meant he had to choose one of its upgrades. There was Commanding Presence, which increased its effect based on the level difference, making it extremely useful against weaker creatures. Now that he was getting up there in levels, this could be useful. Then there was Calming Presence, which seemed to function like Hunter's aura of peace. Making it harder for the targets to willingly attack him. Finally, Focused Gaze, He could focus all of the beguiling presence onto one creature to an even greater degree.

All of these were useful, but he opted for Calming Presence. He wasn't going to evolve in quite a while, so he had to preserve as many limbs as he could.

Speaking of which, he had managed to finagle regeneration out of the evolution. Checking his lip, it was completely healed. The ability used mana to supercharge his healing, meaning it stopped once he was out. Here, in this magical forest, that wasn't a worry. But out in the rest of the world, he might have issues with that.

Biotraits were not his only rewards, of course. He had gained skills. As he anticipated, there was a feat in performing surgery on oneself. That was one of the reasons he didn't want anyone's help. That feat granted him a skill point in healing, surgery, or fleshwork-related skills. Despite his recent exploits, Daggat did not have apprentice-level surgery or healing. His options were to wait for that or spend it on his new fleshworker skill.

The skill itself gave him a percentage chance of the likelihood that one bit of flesh was compatible with another. He still wasn't sure how it worked, despite performing it on himself. That was more or less an accident; he had no idea there was such a thing. Place two bits of creature together, then heal them?

He could upgrade this skill. Decay Timer showed him how long the flesh was good for. View Results would show him what possible biotraits the fleshwork could give. Then the last option was Flesh Potency, which gave him a value of how potent a piece of flesh was, whatever that meant.

Just information. Which Daggat loved, but it wasn't very useful at the moment. So, he would hold onto it until he gained a surgery or healing natural skill.

Daggat was recently reborn. He was clean. But a bath still sounded nice. So, to pass some time while he thought, he went to boil the water.

Zuss flew. Well, she couldn't actually fly. But she could glide very quickly. With all of her speed-related abilities, she felt like she could outglide anything, if there was a shadow to glide through, that was.

It didn't take her long to find the orc camp. She settled in the trees above and watched. Two long shadow daggers were in her hands, just in case. Since her core evolved, the objects she created were supernaturally cold and quickly grew a layer of frost. That did not bother Zuss at all; she was resistant to cold, especially her own chill.

The camp was almost a village. Dozens of orcs meandered, ate, or trained. They carried weapons, real weapons, not the shoddy versions goblins used. The orcs training with them used skills. Power strikes, lunges, magical shields, and more. They had obviously already used their prayers.

The camp's children and the wounded were in the center, with fur tents surrounding them housing warriors, both male and female.

One orc in particular was giving orders. Another towered above the rest. This one's eyes sparked with electricity.

A defended tent interested Zuss. Whatever was inside was valuable. Likely the orcs' stash of spoils. This told her the orcs did not have an inventory system.

There was a banner on display. A maw with teeth made of evergreens.

Not much else to see. So, she sent the report to Daggat through the chat system, then raced back to the manor.

Zuss slipped through a window on the upper floor. The floor was for people who couldn't climb and glide.

Then the hunt was on. She had a cat to find.

Birdy had many haunts. She ruled over the second floor of the manor, roosting in many of the rooms. Zuss went from room to room. No cat. She didn't call out for her; that was no fun.

Birdy would often sit near the hole Klaw made in the kitchen ceiling, judging Hunter as he cooked.

She did not find the cat, but she did find Hunter reorganizing the kitchen. He had taken, or was gifted, several cooking implements in the village. His head almost scraped the ceiling. No cat, though.

That left two other places. The green room, where she would rest in the sun, or atop the hearth, soaking up the heat from the stone.

That was closer, so she dropped from the hole and crawled over Hunter and through the door. The oni was shocked, but only shook his head.

Finally, there she was. Zuss's cat. The winged furball she stole from Calion. She was resting atop the fireplace, lazy and fat from wild mice.

Zuss was larger now and couldn't easily fit on the mantel. But she climbed up there anyway. She leaned in and made little kissing noises.

Birdy's eyes blinked and snapped open. Her fur stood on end as she backed up. Then, she hissed.

"Birdy, it's me!" She reached a talon out to stroke her fur. Birdy swiped with her claws, then flew away.

Zuss was left in a daze. Birdy had scratched her. Drew blood, if only a little. Was she mad that they had been gone for so long? Upset that Zuss didn't bring her on their adventures?

Her heart felt heavy, and her beak quivered, creating a faint clacking sound. Zuss resisted the tears, however. She wasn't a gremlin anymore.

The scratch stopped quickly, but a drop of crimson blood still clung to her talon. Her… talon.

Of course! Zuss smacked herself in the head. Birdy wasn't angry; she didn't recognize her!

That re-framed the problem entirely. All she had to do was reintroduce herself to the cat. Then she could make Birdy her familiar.

Zuss dashed away. She needed to give Birdy a gift. So she hunted. There had to be mice or rats or something around here, right?

Her quest brought Zuss to the workshop, where Anath was speaking with Ivory. There was some contraption set up on the table.

"Either of you seen any mice?" Zuss asked.

"No," Anath said, "But Hunter can make you something if you're hungry."

Ivory gave Anath a surprised look, "Zuss, I haven't congratulated you on your evolution. Congratulations."

"Thanks… what are you doing?"

The table had what looked like a wheel attached to it by an old, rusted vice. Ivory was slowly spinning it. Anath had all four arms resting on the table, and a thread of web from each finger was being funneled to a small ring in front of the wheel.

"We found this old wheel! It makes collecting my web easier." Anath said.

The wheel did have a layer of webbing on it.

Zuss raised an eyebrow at it, "That's odd. Well, the mice call. Don't drain yourself dry."

Then she went through the workshop to a storage shed that was connected to the outside. There were rodents outside, right?

A few minutes into her search, she did not find any rodents. But she did find a bugbear.

Klaw was lying on a flattened log and was pushing another log up and down. The log was about two feet wide and almost ten feet long.

"What are you doing?" Zuss asked with an exasperated voice.

Klaw grunted, then dropped the log behind him. "I am trying to get the next weight training level."

"By picking up trees?"

"Yes."

"Is it working?"

He scrunched his face, "No."

"Then, you should try something different. Maybe try using your legs."

He frowned at her. "What about you?"

"Looking for a mouse."

"Right. Everyone else wasting time too?"

"Basically."

"Of course. Well, when the orcs attack us, I'll be ready."

"You think they are going to attack?"

"Well. No. But Daggat will say something stupid, for sure."

"Probably." Zuss gazed back at the manor. "What are we doing, Klaw?"

He shrugged, "Working on skills. And looking for mice."

"But… why? What's the point of playing at adventurer? I don't think anyone else pushes as hard as we have been."

Klaw stood and started to stretch his arms, "What's your alternative? Just wallow the days away, eating rats and the occasional orc?"

"Kind of. That's what our kind does. Revel and rest."

"And when Rika, or something else, comes to kill us? Or enslave us? Do you want to go back to that?"

"No, not really."

"Don't you like the power you have now?"

"I guess. But… it still feels weird. This house isn't ours, not really. We are squatting until Daggat figures out how to fix the real owner. Quests give us stuff, that's why we do them. But the stuff they give us is just good for more quests."

Klaw thought for a long while, "Zuss. The four of us… You, me, Dag… Glut. We started from the worst spot you can. Enslaved in a mud pit. Forced to kill and eat our own siblings. We still took control. Top gremlins."

"Those days were fun."

"Then we lost everything. Daggat went madder. Glut died. You…" He coughed. "Point is, we need to be back on top. I need to. If anything, just to say fuck you to the world."

Zuss's instinct was to escape the conversation. But, she held firm. She shook on the inside, but she decided to be strong. "History repeats. Who will die this time?"

Klaw gave her a pained expression, "You wouldn't have said that before."

Zuss narrowed her eyes at him, but didn't say anything.

"I miss that Zuss." He said quietly.

Klaw kicked a stone, it flew like a sling bullet, "Are you? Zuss, you used to run circles around Daggat? Stole food from my fingers. You were just… so…" He sighed, "Sorry. I didn't mean to get all mushy."

"So what? What was I?"

"Cool."

They were both quiet for a moment.

"People change," Zuss said.

"Yeah. I have to get used to it. Things have moved so quickly. You're a bird thing now. Daggat is a… whatever the fuck he is."

"You'll change to. For better and worse."

He huffed a laugh, "Sure. For better and worse. I like that."

Zuss's senses tingled. Movement. She zoomed in on the creature. A field mouse. Perfect.

Before Klaw could say anything, she dove after it like a bird of prey.
